He also developed close relationships with artists Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, and Man Ray, among others, and is credited with discovering Joseph Cornell. Résumé:
In 1968, toward the end of a decade that witnessed civil rights protests, the escalation of the war in Vietnam, and an expanded notion of artistic practice (epitomized by "Happenings"), Yvonne Rainer presented her evening-length work, The Mind is a Muscle. A choreographed, multipart performance for seven dancers, interspersed with film and text, this major work was built upon a backbone of variations on Rainer's dance solo, Trio A. In this extended illustrated essay exploring The Mind is a Muscle, Catherine Wood examines the political and media context in which Rainer chose to use the dance-theatre situation as her medium and analyzes Rainer's radical approach to image-making in live form. Catherine Wood is Curator of contemporary art/performance at Tate Modern.

Résumé:
Here we encounter a writer deeply engaged with narrative in situ—a traveler moving through beloved streets, sometimes accompanied, sometimes solo. With her, we see, anew, the Venice Biennale, the Lagoon, and San Michele, the island of the dead; the Piazza di Spagna, the Tiber, the view from the Gianicolo; the pigeons at San Marco and the parrots in the Doria Pamphili. As a poet first and foremost, Zarin’s attention to the smallest details, the loveliest gesture, brings Venice and Rome vividly to life for the reader. The sixteenth book in the expanding, renowned ekphrasis series, ''Two cities'' creates space for these two historic cities to become characters themselves, their relationship to the writer as real as any love affair.

''Stickybeak'' is Julie Cockburn’s first comprehensive monograph. The book coincides with Cockburn’s solo show ''Telling it slant'' at Flowers Gallery in London, UK (12 September-2 November 2019). ''The works in this book were made over a period of twelve years, some one-off experiments, others part of ongoing series that I add to over time. Each piece began with the search for the perfect image, setting some vaguely rigorous parameters for myself. I selected used postcards, old photographs, foxed bookplates and my own childhood drawings. And each of these foundlings had a different history, an unknown or forgotten story to tell. By submitting to my interventions, they transformed from silent, redundant, orphans into material objects with a regenerated heartbeat.'' -JC

Résumé:
You can almost hear the ominous hum of the broken strip lighting, the knot of fear in the gut. These unloved spaces are notoriously menacing, graffiti-ridden, inconvenient. Yet through the lens of celebrated British portrait photographer Perou and the accompanying essay by Karl Hyde (of dance music duo Underworld), their architecture is also elevated to something magnificent, at times even ethereal. Shot at night, Perou’s images also express the original utopian vision of the New Town planners of the 1960s and ’70s. The idea for Tunnel Vision was sparked between friends Perou and Hyde when Perou shot the album cover for Hyde’s debut solo album, Edgeland, featuring an underpass at night. Perou has now shot over 200 underpasses across England.

Résumé:
Published on the occasion of Nathalie Du Pasquier’s solo show at MACRO – Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome, this book navigates the space between an exhibition catalogue and the artist book with juxtapositions of photographs of Nathalie Du Pasquier’s works, installation views of the show at MACRO, and extracts from texts by various writers and figures fundamental to her practice. These come together to create an extension of the exhibition itself, in a form that channels the spirit of the show: the pages become exhibition spaces embracing associations and combinations allowing for a deeper understanding and exploration of Du Pasquier’s work, and her imagination at large. It is a glimpse into the possibilities offered by her oeuvre, which can be approached, interpreted, and experienced from countless perspectives.

On the occasion of the exhibition, UCCA published Wang Tuo's first-ever catalogue, which reproduces his video works through still images and script excerpts.
