Résumé:
Experimenting with a range of materials from cheap mass-produced items to space-age titanium, and using 3D computer modeling as an architectural tool, Frank Gehry’s buildings are remarkable and surprising, united by the sense of movement they convey. His projects flow, curve, bend, and crumple in novel and unexpected ways, subverting traditional building norms. From his own home in Santa Monica to the undulating Beekman Tower in New York, from the shining curves of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao to the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, and his most recent construction, Luma Arles, Gehry has left his indelible mark on the history of architectural design. Forty of the renowned architect’s most remarkable works are presented by architect and critic Jean-Louis Cohen, alongside views of the interiors and exteriors of each building.

Résumé:
Architects Frank Gehry (b. 1929) and Hans Scharoun (1893–1972) never met in person during Scharoun’s lifetime, yet two of their most famous buildings are intimately linked: Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, completed in Los Angeles in 2003, and Scharoun’s 1963 concert hall for the Berlin Philharmonic. Although constructed thousands of miles and decades apart from each other, the two buildings, located in what are now sister cities, share striking visual features, such as the combination of bold peaks with graceful sweeping curves. This catalog for a recent exhibition at the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor in Berlin takes the two concert halls as a jumping-off point to examine Scharoun’s influence on Gehry and uncover elements common to their work.
