Résumé:
For a small country that generally keeps a low profile on the stage of world events, Denmark has played a disproportionately prominent role in the history of 20th Century architecture and design. Today in the early 21st Century, known for its anything-goes attitude towards design, Denmark also has its share of provocative architects surfing waves of fashionable trends, yet a few firms maintain a more grounded and centered approach to their work. Prominent among this group is KPF Architects (Kjelgaard, Pedersen & Fællestegnestuen), whose philosophy and work is a prime example of design rooted in a specific regional narrative while globally pursuing new ideas, new concepts and new materials that elevate their projects to the highest levels of architectural discourse, without sacrificing either usefulness or pleasure for the client. Even their most ordinary functional projects like banks, office buildings, and medical facilities embody a sensitivity that is uplifting. Kenneth Frampton states: One cannot help but be reminded of the tradition of Arne Jacobsen when looking at KPF Arkitekters work and thus of the commonsense functional, but ludic, character of the still vital Danish modern movement as it has consistently evolved over the past sixty years

Résumé:
Mario Botta's villas, schools, banks, office and administrative buildings, museums and churches are structures of extraordinary visual power. How do they come into being? What are the foundations and constants in Botta's design process? What are the convictions behind them and the experiences derived from thirty years of creative work? This book answers these questions in three chapters, revolving around the themes of city, architecture and design. To Botta, the most primary and important task of the house is to protect and comfort; it is the place where the individual can find himself. Consequently, Botta describes the city as the "house» of a community, a house which should permit the most varied of interactions. The design in either of these two realms should never disregard the other. The architect must not forget that one of his essential tasks is to enrich the city that all too often threatens to deteriorate into an agglomerate. Architecture that deserves its name is "pensieri costruiti»: constructed ideas; it therefore does not limit itself to the functional and the pragmatic, but holds a beacon pointing to what already exists. When it comes to his furniture designs, Botta is fascinated by the tension between unchanging function and the persistent search for new aesthetic interpretation.

Résumé:
American ruins have become increasingly prominent, whether in discussions of “urban blight” and home foreclosures, in commemorations of 9/11, or in postapocalyptic movies. In this book, Nick Yablon argues that the association between American cities and ruins dates back to a much earlier period in the nation’s history. Recovering numerous scenes of urban desolation—from failed banks, abandoned towns, and dilapidated tenements to the crumbling skyscrapers and bridges envisioned in science fiction and cartoons—this publication challenges the myth that ruins were absent or insignificant objects in nineteenth-century America. The first book to document an American cult of the ruin, it traces its deviations as well as derivations from European conventions. Unlike classical and Gothic ruins, which decayed gracefully over centuries and inspired philosophical meditations about the fate of civilizations, America’s ruins were often “untimely,” appearing unpredictably and disappearing before they could accrue an aura of age. As modern ruins of steel and iron, they stimulated critical reflections about contemporary cities, and the unfamiliar kinds of experience they enabled. Unearthing evocative sources everywhere from the archives of amateur photographers to the contents of time-capsules, this title exposes crucial debates about the economic, technological, and cultural transformations known as urban modernity.

Résumé:
In the middle of the night they quickly build houses and seize land before the police destroy their fragile homes. They're squatters, families that risk the wrath of governments and property owners by building dwellings on land they don't own, and they represent one out of every ten people on the planet. Investigative journalist Robert Neuwirth lived among squatter communities from Rio to Bombay to Nairobi to Istanbul to give us an impassioned, inside view of squatter life and a glimpse into the urban future. He met people in Nairobi who built homes with their bare hands, Turkish families who plot land invasions, and children in Rio whose parents justify outfoxing the authorities as the only path to a better life. And he shows us that in cities like Rio, squatter settlements have become decent places to live for formerly landless people. Tracing the notion of private property from the enclosure movement in Europe to the settlement of the U.S., Neuwirth shows how squatting rights may actually be seen as more "natural" than the current laws practiced in the U.S. In almost every country of the developing world, the most active builders are squatters, creating complex local economies with high rises, shopping strips, banks, and self-government. As they invent new social structures, Neuwirth argues, squatters are at the forefront of the worldwide movement to develop new visions of what constitutes property and community.
