Résumé:
The art world is no longer defined by the activity of traditional art centers such as New York, Berlin, Beijing, or London, but is instead shaped by many cities, small and large. These new artistic communities, each reflecting the history, culture, and conditions of its region, have established a vibrant network for contemporary art. Six Lines of Flight explores the hybrid nature of today's international artistic landscape by introducing readers to the art scenes in six featured cities--Beirut, Lebanon; Cali, Colombia; Cluj, Romania; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; San Francisco, USA; and Tangier, Morocco. In bringing together work by artists whose efforts have anchored each city's cultural scene, this book maps the pathways between them, illuminating the dynamic, global, interconnected spirit of twenty-first-century art. Essays by writers active in each region are accompanied by color images of representative artworks, along with brief texts on key local artists and organizations.

Résumé:
''Architecture and Social Change'' is a timely, and urgently needed, survey of social and environmental justice advocacy in architecture. Spotlighting contemporary design and research practitioners who are creatively leveraging their expertise for social change, this book features interviews with fifteen influential design leaders who are at the forefront of their profession’s efforts to confront pressing challenges like housing insecurity, racial and economic inequality, environmental degradation, and architectural waste. Among the interviewees are Dana Cuff, who, as director of cityLAB, is helping to reshape housing policy in California; Joana Dabaj, cofounder of the design charity CatalyticAction, which empowers refugee children from the Syrian civil war to act as “co-designers” of playgrounds and public spaces in Lebanon; and Ivi Diamantopoulou and Jaffer Kolb of New York City–based New Affiliates, who repurpose, through lively recontextualization, the architectural byproducts of their city’s museum exhibitions and building-performance mockups. These insightful student-led interviews compellingly capture the current moment of soul-searching in both the profession and the academy.

Résumé:
Official catalog of the National Pavilion of Lebanon at the 19th Venice biennale of Architecture, The Land Remembers invites us to explore alternative ways of healing and preserving the natural environment by harnessing local knowledge and the land intelligens. The content of this catalog confronts the deliberate destruction of Lebanon's ecosystems and societies, drawing on the soil's memory as a testament to resilience and renewal. The format of the memory box is an archive of the land's richness, challenges, and potential, asking: How can we heal the land to build for future generations? The catalog combines expert analysis, personal stories, and diverse perspectives on destruction, regeneration, and coexistence. From ecological restoration to regenerative architecture and preservation of Lebanon's biodiversity, it underscores the urgent need for a symbiotic relationship between people and nature. By counter-mapping environmental destruction, reflecting on modern warfare's impacts, and embracing innovative solutions, this collective work envisions a legacy for future generations—one rooted in resilience, learning, and hope.

Résumé:
For millennia, the city stood out against the landscape, walled and compact. This concept of the city was long accepted as adequate for characterizing the urban experience. However, the nature of the city, both real and imagined, has always been more permeable than this model reveals. The essays in Urban Imaginaries respond to this condition by focusing on how social and physical space is conceived as both indefinite and singular. They emphasize the ways this space is shared and thus made into urban culture. Urban Imaginaries offers case studies on cities in Brazil, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, and India, as well as in the United States and France, and in doing so blends social, cultural, and political approaches to better understand the contemporary urban experience. Alev Çinar is associate professor of political science and public administration at Bilkent University, Turkey and Thomas Bender is university professor of the humanities and history at New York University.

Résumé:
In 1856, the English photographer Francis Frith set out on the first of three tours of Egypt and the Holy Lands. Traveling up the Nile and then on to the Sinai, Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon, Frith systematically crafted exquisite pictures of ruins, landscapes, and legendary sites. He then published his views in England and America in a variety of formats, becoming something of a celebrity in photographic circles. This book, the first to place Frith's Egyptian and Levantine images in cultural context, reveals the distinct meanings these ostensibly "topographic" pictures held for the photographer and his Victorian audience. A Quaker by birth and an entrepreneur by nature, Frith brought to his photographic projects a sense of mission: to revive and confirm the stories of the Bible, while offering the region to armchair travelers as a seamless Oriental milieu of Romantic reverie. Francis Frith in Egypt and Palestine narrates the political, intellectual, and social concerns that make Frith representative of England's encounter with the East in the nineteenth century. Historian of photography Douglas R. Nickel brings a sophisticated interdisciplinary approach to bear on the subject in order to expose the complexity of Frith's image-making, setting the photographs against a Victorian backdrop of religious debate, imperialist thought, Romantic philosophy, and Pre-Raphaelite aesthetics.

Résumé:
The steep increases recently witnessed in both business and leisure travel have helped provoke a new variety in hotel interiors, and designers from various disciplines are now establishing a range of design solutions catering to the widely differing demands of each client type, giving new identities to hotels. From the boutique hotel to the airport atrium, the urban retreat to the contemporary resort, the immensity of Vegas to the intimacy of Beirut, "Hotel Interior Structures" presents a wide range of these new design trends found in present-day hotel interiors. This volume aims to offer architects, interior designers and hotel owners - as well as those with a more general interest in the use of interior design detail to create a particular atmosphere or living experience - a valuable insight into the what, why and how of current design directions for hotels across the globe. Identifying ten hotel types that have been conceived within the last ten years, it features text, plans and detailed photography of a selection of hotels of each type, as well as interviews with some of the key figures involved. With examples of hotels in major cities and resorts worldwide - from London, Paris and New York to locations in Japan, Egypt and Lebanon - it gives a complete picture of the creativeness and imaginativeness of hotel interior design at the beginning of the 21st century.
