Résumé:
The design of the 1970s was distinguished by a strong confluence of creativity and functionalism in furnishing and decor. We already recognize many '70s furniture designs as icons of mid-century modernism-and the proof is the prices they command at fine furniture auctions today. Bony examines the works of international designers whose creations exemplify this period, from the ergonomically-focused designers working in America to the pure design movement in Scandinavia and design innovators in Italy led by Archizoom, Alchymia, and Gaetano Pesce. This indispensable reference book chronicles the period's interior design trends with over 200 photographs focusing on artistic and decorative innovations that created the first intelligent and informed design conversation between two continents.

Résumé:
Quality living in old age is one of the important topics of our time. Architects and builders can contribute innovative types of housing, intelligent concepts for barrier-free buildings, and advanced systems of care for people who are fragile or suffering from dementia. Intelligent design solutions can push back the limits on housing and care, on residential architecture and care facilities, on individual, collective, and assisted forms of housing, and even on the various phases of life in favor of a comprehensive trend toward integrated forms of housing. This volume in the series Design Manuals optimizes the concept, content, and presentation of the series to improve its use by the customer. A third of the volume provides detailed expert information from around fifteen contributors, including general questions of energy management and sustainability, open space, and product design. A section of examples provides a building typology, presenting approximately forty international buildings in analyses of up to eight pages that offer exemplary solutions for multigenerational buildings, assisted living, housing for people with dementia and other special target groups, old persons’ homes, nursing homes, and integrated projects.

Exhibiton in the Arnhem museum of modern art in the Netherlands from June 25th - September 11th 2005. It is quite unusual for a company to use the occasion of its 100th birthday to invite no less than twelve designers to react to its products, production system and image and think about that company's future in their own particular way. Dutch furniture producer Arco did just that. Its director, Willem van Ast, felt the need to do so, as his firm owes its very existence to commissioning designers from outside, something it has done since the 1970s. The project has acted as a perfect mirror for Arco itself in the shape of interesting and valuable designs, as well as eliciting a range of clear signatures from twelve talented Dutch designers, most of whom now enjoy a solid reputation on the international platform.

Résumé:
The world of design is in confusion. The market suffers from a surplus of products, designers and companies, the majority of which are imitations and epigones that constantly supplant each other. Distinctions between separate disciplines are becoming increasingly blurred, labels merge with one another and design studios go bankrupt. Old and new values clash. The world economy has been plunged into recession while interest for local aspects is on the rise. High time for a rethink on the role of the designer and the meaning of design. What is an actual and true contemporary attitude to design - what is contemporary design? These are questions posed by "Bright Minds, Beautiful Ideas" , an inspiring and brainstorming book that through the imagination and handiwork of four innovative and influential designers, sketches a perspective for today (and possibly the future). Despite differences in background and the date of their oeuvre, Bruno Munari (Italy 1907-1998), Charles and Ray Eames (USA 1907-1978 and 1912-1988), Martí Guixé (Spain 1964) and Jurgen Bey (the Netherlands 1965), share a number of characteristics that are of fundamental importance for design. They question everything and are capable of coupling fantasy, playfulness and investigation with vision. They link culture to economy and science and match curiosity and openness with social commitment and action. Their work and vision are timeless and yet contemporary. "Bright Minds, Beautiful Ideas" is a vital book that gives a sparkling singular perspective of roles, values and functions of designers and design.
