This publication accompanies the artist’s solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery, which surveys her rich body of work from the 1990s to the present. It marks the first solo exhibition by a Black female artist in the 90-year history of the Gallery. The book honours and documents her compelling but underrecognized practice, which draws upon her lived experience as an African Canadian person and her mixed cultural heritage. Comprising mixed-media assemblages, paintings, sculptural objects and textiles made from found and recycled materials, her art explores the places and practices of her ancestors alongside contemporary political concerns and social movements such as Black Lives Matter.

This book shows how, even in the most difficult conditions–forced displacement, trauma, and struggle–design can help create a life worth living. ''Design to live'' documents designs, inventions, and artworks created by Syrian refugees living in the Azraq Refugee Camp in Jordan. Through these ingenious and creative innovations–including the vertical garden, an arrangement necessitated by regulations that forbid planting in the ground; a front hall, fashioned to protect privacy; a baby swing made from recycled desks; and a chess set carved from a broomstick–refugees defy the material scarcity, unforgiving desert climate, and cultural isolation of the camp. Written in close collaboration with the residents of the camp, with text in both English and Arabic, ''Design to live,'' reflects two perspectives on the camp: people living and working in Azraq and designers reflecting on humanitarian architecture within the broader field of socially engaged art and design. Architectural drawings, illustrations, photographs, narratives, and stories offer vivid testimony to the imaginative and artful ways that residents alter and reconstruct the standardized humanitarian design of the camp–and provide models that can be replicated elsewhere. The book is the product of a three-year project undertaken by MIT Future Heritage Lab, researchers and students with Syrian refugees at the Azraq Refugee Camp, CARE, Jordan, and the German-Jordanian University.

How and where we work and spend our leisure time has changed dramatically in recent years. The increased mobility and global networking that pervade all aspects of our lives have had a considerable impact on the spaces in which we live, meet, and work. SpaceCraft presents projects that meet the changing spatial needs of our modern lifestyles and that are simultaneously expanding our current understanding of architecture. On the one hand, the book features flexible, fleeting structures that only exist for a limited time; these include pavilions, art projects or exhibition spaces. On the other hand, SpaceCraft focuses on spaces that are used temporarily such as studios, offices or vacation homes. These structures, which are often used as hideouts from our hectic lives, can either blend in harmoniously with their surroundings or seem as exotic as a spaceship that has just landed. The book documents original work by architects, artists and others that is distinguished by a playful, unconventional use of space. Many of the projects are experimental interventions within urban environments that are strongly influenced by a street art context. As SpaceCraft proves, it is this contemporary influence in particular that is currently redefining the boundaries of architecture. SpaceCraft presents work that expresses our current modes of work and play. The book is thus inspiring both for architects and interior designers, and also for all creatives who work with space.

Aglaia Konrad’s work often takes the form of a book, each conceived as an edited archive of the ways in which she uses photography to investigate urban landscapes. Two of her book projects were part of "The lives of documents—Photography as project", the project curated by Stefano Graziani and Bas Princen, and it was while putting this exhibition together that Konrad shared her enthusiasm after researching the work of five women that conceived several residential neighbourhoods in Warsaw after the Second World War and redefined the city as a green haven. If the two book projects she presented in our exhibition—Atlas (2000) and Copy Cities (2003–2004)—brought together multiple fragments of her extensive and systematic documentary work on cities, her survey of the work of Alina Scholtz, Barbara Brukalska, Halina Skibniewska, Helena Syrkus, and Zofia Hansen leads now to a travel diary that reflects on the role of architecture and landscape architecture in defining places of bonding and belonging.

In Nachbau, the Turner Prize-winning artist Simon Starling delves into the presentation of art in shifting historical and architectural contexts. His starting point is the Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany, one of the first to specialize in Modern art, founded at the beginning of the last century. In 1937, some 1,400 works from its collection--including pieces by artists such as Matisse and CEzanne--were declared ""degenerate"" and locked away by the Nazi government. The museum itself was destroyed in 1944 and 1945, rebuilt after the war, and is now about to be partially demolished once again in the course of renovations. Working in the museum's confines, using four photographs of its galleries taken between 1929 and 1944 by Albert Renger-Patzsch, (a key photographer in the ""Neue Sachlichkeit,"" or ""New Objectivity""), Starling reconstructs that era's art placement and surroundings in a detailed, film set-like installation, bringing this charged historical background forward into the present. This two-volume artist's book on the project documents and elaborates on the installation and ideas it explores: the continuities, transformations and alterations that the artist shows shaping art and history. Simon Starling, born in Surrey in 1967, lives and works in Glasgow.

The narrative begins at the Pacific ocean and moves eastward through what was formerly one of the world’s great rain forests. Photographs at the center of the book report on the forest’s destruction. Elsewhere they trace a search for hope. Two hundred years ago, Lewis and Clark reported finding in the American Northwest a vast forest of ancient evergreens. In "Turning back", Robert Adams looks again at the region’s trees, discovering evidence both of America’s failure and of a continuing promise. President Jefferson’s primary charge to Lewis and Clark was to prepare the way for American commerce. Today, historians still speculate about why, upon his return, Lewis lapsed into depression and apparently committed suicide. "Going east," Adams suggests, "was more difficult than going west." So then, what is the future? "Turning back" documents two kinds of predictive evidence. On the one hand we observe the results of greed so unrestrained that they are indistinguishable from those of nihilism. On the other we see what still lives, whether by our design or neglect, or Providence; in these 164 pictures the tone is celebratory, as in a prayer book. From coastal landscapes populated with tourists to timber clear-cutting and small family farms in eastern Oregon, here we reflect on what was lost, what is retained, and what we value both regionally and as a people with a common history.
