Vito Acconci is well-known as a concept and performing artist who was far ahead of his time. In 2003, he realized one of his first architectural projects : for his artist-and-gallerist friend Kenny Schachter he designed the multifunctional gallery space conTEMPorary in New York. This experimental space became programmatic for their further collaboration, up to their latest project in King’s Cross, London. Over the past years, Vito Acconci has moved towards architecture. Today’s Acconci Studio covers planning for such diverse projects as the Skateboard Park in San Juan, the Inside-Out Bookstore for Documenta X, or an urban planning for Tel Aviv. Vito Acconci and Kenny Schachter met for two discussions in London and Basel in 2004 and 2005.

Résumé:
In the challenging context of accelerating climate dynamics, the core discipline of architectural design is evolving and embracing new forms of action. New York-based nonprofit Terreform ONE has established a distinctive design tactic that investigates projects through the regenerative use of natural materials, science, and the emergent field of socio-ecological design. This kind of design approach uses actual living matter (not abstracted imitations of nature) to create new functional elements and spaces. These future-based actions are not only grounded in social justice, but are also far-reaching in their application of digital manufacturing and maker culture. Terreform ONE tackles urgent environmental and urban social concerns through the integrated use of living materials and organisms.

Résumé:
"Share: Conversations about contemporary architecture. The Nordic countries" is the first book in a new global series of investigative interviews about the modern architectural process. Initiated and undertaken by the Norway-based Canadian architect Todd Saunders, the Nordic Countries edition features interviews with 30 architectural practices from Finland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Iceland. With more than 25 years of professional practice behind him, Saunders has always been fascinated by the role of creativity in everyday practice and the potential power alluded to it. In a series of interviews undertaken over the past year, Saunders has queried the changing role of the architect, the challenges of contemporary practice – especially the impact of the pandemic – and the ways in which architects can achieve the right balance in the relationship between site, client, craft and innovation. Presented as a series of candid conversations between architect and architect, the book offers insights that go beyond the polished histories that usually make it into print. In particular, the interviews explore the role of challenge and failure, conflict and mistakes, chance and coincidence; all familiar aspects of the architectural process yet elements that tend to be glossed over in conventional monographs. The Nordic countries edition will be followed by companion volumes that explore the work of architects in North and South America, central Europe and the Far East.

Résumé:
Formerly grounded in values of craftsmanship, in the skilled making of products, ‘quality’ is now associated with the management of administrative or technical processes. Its appreciation, once based in the exercise of individual judgement and taste, is now often founded on supposedly objective systems of evaluation. Practitioners of design are under pressure to quantify ‘quality’, but it is questionable whether it is possible or even desirable to do so. This book considers this important issue, looking at how quality is defined, appreciated, evaluated, managed, and produced. With contributions from eminent architects and architectural critics, this book is for architects, academics, students and anyone interested in what architectural quality is, and how it may be achieved.

Architecture on Display is a research initiative that consists of interviews with each of the living directors of the Venice Biennale for Architecture. The origins of the architecture biennale are generally traced to the 1970s, when it emerged from under the umbrella of the larger Venice Biennale, which was itself established in 1895. Since then it has become one of the most prestigious forums for architectural discourse today, and has served as a model for a range of international exhibitions. The book explores the biennale through the directors who established its particular discourse, including Vittorio Gregotti, Paolo Portoghesi, Francesco Dal Co, Kurt W Forster, Massimiliano Fuksas, Hans Hollein, Richard Burdett, Deyan Sudjic, Aaron Betsky and Kazuyo Sejima, as well as the current president of the Venice Biennale, Paolo Barrata. These conversations do not seek to recapitulate the exhibitions themselves but rather explore the questions that these exhibitions raise, with the hope of offering a model for future curatorial endeavours.

Résumé:
After World War I, architects around the world aspired to transcend national boundaries devastated by conflicts, resulting in a flurry of artistic creativity. In Japan, a generation of young architects strove to create "international architecture," or kokusai kenchiku, a product of increasing international travel and communication, growth of the mass media, and technological innovation. Ken Tadashi Oshima traces the many interconnections between architects from Japan, Europe, and America and their designs during the interwar years by examining the careers and buildings of three leading modernists in Japan: Yamada Mamoru (1894-1966), Horiguchi Sutemi (1895-1984), and Antonin Raymond (1888-1976).
