Résumé:
Following Marcel Duchamp's death in 1968, the Philadelphia Museum of Art stunned the art world by unveiling a project on which he had been working secretly for twenty years, long after he had supposedly given up art for chess. In this illustrated study, Julian Haladyn argues that Duchamp's intention in this final piece was similar to Raymond Roussel's in How I Wrote Certain of My Books: not, as many have maintained, to provide a neat summation of his career, but the opposite—to open his artwork to endless interpretation and reinterpretation. Duchamp's engagement with his legacy is a significant historical development in the critical relationship between artists and the institution of art. Additionally, Haladyn sees that the staging of Étant donnés foreshadowed strategies used by Minimalism as well as installation, spectatorship, and institutional critique.

Résumé:
The first comprehensive monograph on the acclaimed American artist and architect, known for her environmental works and memorials that distill a tranquil yet texturally rich minimalism. Maya Lin is one of the most important public artists of this century. As an architecture student at Yale, Lin designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial as a class project, entering it in the largest design competition in American history. Her winning proposal, a V-shaped wall of black stone etched with the names of 58,000 dead soldiers, has since become the most visited memorial in the nation’s capital. This volume presents 50 projects from the last three decades that demonstrate the scope of Lin’s creative process, featuring her own sketches and drawings and linked by her ideal of making a place for individuals within the landscape.

Résumé:
''Duchamp-isms'' is a selection of illuminating quotations from Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968), one of the most important figures in the history of modern art. A painter, sculptor, writer, and chess player, Duchamp changed the very definition of art with his “readymades”—everyday objects such as a bicycle wheel or bottle rack that he titled, signed, and presented as art. He provoked critics and the public with works such as the Cubist-Futurist painting ''Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2'' (1912) and ''Fountain'' (1917), a readymade composed of a men’s urinal signed “R. Mutt.” Prizing the intellectual over the aesthetic, Duchamp inspired later movements like Minimalism, Conceptualism, and Pop Art. Delightful and witty, ''Duchamp-isms'' offers rich insights into the mind of a true icon of modern art.

Résumé:
The distinctive visual language, bright colors, and unexpected materials of the '80s postmodernists are making a comeback. After decades of minimalism, midcentury modern, and Scandinavian design, a new wave of architects and designers are experimenting with shape, scale, and symbolic references to add expression and meaning to interior and furniture design. Playing with the themes of postmodernism, sometimes knowingly, sometimes incidentally, creatives are once again demonstrating that form doesn’t have to follow function, less is not more, and ornament is not a crime. These twenty-one houses from around the world transform the everyday with joyful colors and patterns, the juxtaposition of materials, and the celebration of surfaces. Daring and delightful with a healthy dose of wit and whimsy, Ornament Is Not a Crime is for anyone seeking bold inspiration for their home.

Résumé:
This first complete record of Prague artist Jiri Kovanda's actions, installations and interventions over the past 30 years replicates the A4 pages (with photographs and typewritten texts attached) on which he documented his activities in the 1970s and 1980s. That first ephemeral work focused on the discoveries of new types of relationships, enacted with his friends and anonymous passersby in the streets. His installations from the 1980s were ironic responses to American Minimalism, set up in peripheral public spaces during the period of so-called "real socialism." Actions and Installations 1975-2006 covers those evolving performances and interventions up through 2005 and situates Kovanda's work in the history of Conceptualism. Among its three interviews is a talk with the artist by Hans Ulrich Obrist. Kovanda has been invited to participate in Documenta 2007.

Résumé:
In 1971 Alighiero e Boetti commissioned Afghan embroiderers to create a map of the world, with each country bearing the colours and pattern of its flag. The commission grew into a beautifully crafted, large-scale series of maps produced over a period of twenty years in Kabul, Afghanistan and Peshawar, Pakistan. Each map tracked geopolitical changes throughout the world: the break-up of the Soviet Union, the unification of Germany, disputes over territories in the Middle East and regime changes in the Eurasian peninsula. In this new study, Italian curator Luca Cerizza looks at Boetti's Mappa in relation to world events and the history of map-making, as well as to the contemporary art movements of Minimalism, Conceptualism and Arte Povera. Luca Cerizza is an art historian and curator based in Berlin.

Résumé:
Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando is a master of minimalism, known for his use of simple materials, his light-filled interiors, and his respect for the natural environment in which he works. This handsome book celebrates Ando's Stone Hill Center at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, his first museum project set within a rural American landscape. Celebrated photographer Richard Pare records Ando at his best, capturing the play of light across the cedar entry, the shimmering woodlands reflected in the large gallery windows, the lush meadow grasses juxtaposed with sharply angled walls. Michael Webb's essay provides context for the Clark building, tracing Ando's career from his early work in Japan to his iconographic Church of the Light in Osaka (1989) to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (2002).

Résumé:
Mona Hatoum (born 1952) has established herself as a truly transnational artist: born in Beirut, and working in Berlin and London, her multimedia work explores the dangers inherent to the borderlines between nation and body. This multi-authored and richly illustrated publication reveals all of the different facets of the artist's career, from her overtly political performances of the 1980s to her later installations, photographs, sculptures and videos that examine the human body as a metaphor for oppression in a broader sense. Hatoum's unusual blend of Surrealism and Minimalism both seduces and repels: her endoscopic videos of her organs, blood-red lights, the crackling electricity of wired furniture and glowing globes, a variety of cages and the murderous possibilities of kitchen utensils present us with an alienating intimacy that questions our relationship to our bodies and to the world.

Résumé:
British architect John Pawson (born 1949) is a master of minimalism. His buildings and objects are defined by his devotion to simplicity and the art of “leaving out,” and by their purity of space, proportion, light and material. Influenced by Japanese culture and minimalist sculpture, Pawson defines his idea of the minimum as a perfection and quality that arises when every detail and connection is reduced to only that which is essential. With models, large-format photographs, material studies and objects, this publication provides an overview of Pawson’s work and demonstrates the phenomenon of “emptiness.” Among the projects presented are the Cistercian monastery Novy Dvur in Czech Republic (2004), the footbridge Sackler Crossing in London (2006), the Stone House for La Triennale di Milano (2010) and the St. Moritz church in Augsburg, currently in its planning stages.
