Résumé:
What began as an academic initiative to improve the quality of life of the poor strata of the population has now become a professional “do tank” offering services that cover the entire spectrum of urban development. The celebrated Chilean architect, winner of the 2016 Pritzker Prize and Director of the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale, Alejandro Aravena (born 1967) founded Elemental in 2001 in his hometown with the goal of alleviating social deprivation directly instead of hoping for a balance of income relations. Besides building public facilities and public housing, Elemental also develops new approaches for the reorganization of resources and the potential of cities by means of projects devoted to infrastructure and transportation. This volume, first published in 2013 and now back in print, documents the social activity and history of the international architectural team and sheds light on its financing strategies, for example through participatory building.

"Taste is the lack of appetite" is an exhibition on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of GRAFT and celebrates the curiosity for the special, the unique, and the unexpected. The internationally active architecture firm is known not only for individual forms and design, but also for its social engagement. For the team, the design practice is defined by optimism and a pleasure in experimentation – leading to the realisation of hybrid solutions for a wide range of challenges. The exhibition features a selection of residential, mixed-use and cultural buildings, each of which reflects the firm’s exemplary design strategies. In line with its multifaceted work, the show also sheds light on the topic of Architecture Activism and presents the original prototype of the community-building Solarkiosk.

Résumé:
One of the most acclaimed architects working in Brazil since the mid-twentieth century, Paulo Mendes da Rocha (1928–2021) began building in the 1950s, championing an approach often associated with "Brutalism" but expanding well beyond it. This retrospective catalogue is the first major publication on Mendes da Rocha since the establishment of his archive at the Casa da Arquitectura in 2021. A team of international scholars provides a comprehensive view of the architect’s trajectory and the collective dimension of his work, along with thematic essays. Mendes da Rocha’s identity as a South American architect interested in the geographic relation between nature and culture is underlined. The book’s contributors explore his concern with the social and anthropogenic impact of the continent’s development, as well as its colonial past and postcolonial future.

Résumé:
A compelling survey of Texas houses that draw both on the heritage of pioneer ranches and on the twentieth-century design principles of modernism. Helen Thompson and Casey Dunn, the writer/photographer team that produced "Marfa Modern", join forces again to investigate Texas modernism. The juxtaposition of the sleek European forms with a gritty Texas spirit generated a unique brand of modernism that is very basic to the culture of the state today. Its roots are in the early Texas pioneer houses, whose long, low profiles express an efficiency that is basic to the modern idiom. This Texas-centric style is focused on the relationship of the house to the site, the materials it is made of--most often local stone and wood--and the way the building functions in the harsh Texas climate.

Résumé:
The Rotterdam-based architectural firm MVRDV caused quite a stir with its pavilion at EXPO 2000 in Hanover. The motto of the Dutch contribution was "Holland Creates Space", a topic skilfully applied by the team of architects to a façade-free building consisting of stacked-up landscapes. A more recent project by the group, a structural exploration of the future of the Rhine-Ruhr region, implemented in co operation with a number of universities in Germany and the Netherlands, has been extensively documented in the book at hand-a compact commentary on the meaning of region, identity, and tradition, issues ever more consciously present in the face of globalization. From the beginning of the last century, the Ruhr area has been the industrial heart of Germany. With the demise of the coal, iron, and steel industries, the region now faces an existential question: growth or shrinkage? This question is the point of departure for the development of various future scenarios: is it possible to define a new Rhine-Ruhr region, and, with substantial interventions, prepare it for global competition? Or is it preferable to encourage structural re-building by means of an unobtrusive cultivation of extant structures?

Résumé:
Recognizing the dire threats of climate collapse and mass extinction, the global initiative Bauhaus Earth convened a team of scientists, architects, spatial planners, and policymakers from around the world to author a manifesto. ''Toward Re-Entanglement: A Charter for the City and the Earth'' is a call for radical transformation. It challenges all those with a role in the conception, production, operation, and governance of the building sector to address the systemic ecological, climatic, and social impacts incurred by its activities. Twelve principles of "re-entanglement" guide the redesign of the entire life cycle of the urban realm: the reforming and rematerializing of the physical artifacts that comprise it, the reconfiguring of the socioeconomic structures that underpin it, and the reengaging of the bioregions that might sustainably supply it. In this way, the unprecedented convergence of the environmental and social crises we are causing offers powerful opportunities for systemic change.

How can the history of a continent and an idea be brought together in a new place? In 2009 the European Parliament decided to create an institution dedicated to the history of Europe, an emblematic building located in the heart of the European Quarter in Brussels. The design, a transformation by the team of Chaix & Morel et Associés and JSWD Architekten of an Art Deco building from 1934, was finished in 2017. Their concept addressed how European history could find a spatially sensitive expression. This publication, authored by Sophie Trelcat and designed by Baldinger and Vu-Huu, presents the history of this seminal architectural project from conception to completion.

Résumé:
The up-and-coming Dutch firm ZUS (Zones Urbaines Sensibles), founded in 2001 by Elma van Boxel and Kristian Koreman, is a think tank of two--tackling the landscape architect’s role in the contemporary city. Based in Rotterdam, an ideal vantage for both research and innovative project-building, ZUS participates in projects micro and macro, ranging from clothing design to large-scale interventions in the landscape. And the team aims high: “Our spatial interventions contribute to a higher state of consciousness of the naked reality of our modern, urban culture and environment, although not always by accepting it as the only reality.” Their 2006 proposal, “Discoforum” is characteristic. Noticing that Rotterdam clubs are divided by race, ZUS created a design that would place one transparent wall in each club facing out onto a shared outdoor space. Such proposals and research are combined with the duo’s own commentary in this volume, making it invaluable for anyone curious about the next wave of architecture and urban planning.
