Résumé:
Western society is being terrorized by fear. Whether concerning national security, road safety or the protection of public health, every form of risk is meant to be spread, accounted for or eradicated. The safety and security obsession is leaving behind ever more visible traces, especially in public space. Speed bumps, smoke-free zones and surveillance cameras serve a society where prevention is the order of the day. This second book in the Group portraits series -a collaboration between the Netherlands architecture fund and the Netherlands foundation for visual arts, design and architecture (Fonds BKVB) - once again brings together four groups of young designers around a highly topical theme. As a sequel to the successful "City branding" book, this publication explores the various aspects of fear and prevention and considers the impact on contemporary urban space in four chapters. All the stops are pulled out: text, photography, research and design alternate in a thought-provoking sequence. This publication is the result of intensive research into the presence of fear in our Western society and the role that architecture might play herein. It is therefore an instrument for students, researchers, architects and policy-makers who are concerned with security issues.

Résumé:
The passage of time and the reality of an aging survivor population have made it increasingly urgent to document and give expression to testimony, experience, and memory of the Holocaust. At the same time, artists have struggled to find a language to describe and retell a legacy often considered "unimaginable." Contrary to those who insist that the Holocaust defies representation, Image and Remembrance demonstrates that artistic representations are central to the practice of remembrance and commemoration. Including essays on representations of the Holocaust in film, architecture, painting, photography, memorials, and monuments, this thought-provoking volume considers ways in which visual artists have given form to the experience of the Holocaust and addresses the role that imagination plays in shaping historical memory. Among works discussed are Daniel Libeskind's Jewish Museum in Berlin, Rachel Whiteread's Holocaust Memorial in Vienna, Morris Louis's series of paintings Charred Journal, photographer Shimon Attie's Writing on the Wall, and Mikael Levin's series Untitled. Image and Remembrance provides a thoughtful site for personal reflection and commemoration as well as a context for reconsidering the processes of art making and the cultural significance of artistic images.

Résumé:
Lucien Hervé (b. 1910), one of the great architectural photographers of the twentieth century, collaborated with Le Corbusier from 1949 until the renowned architect died in 1965. Hervé approached his subjects seeking not only to document the buildings he was commissioned to photograph but also, especially, to convey a sense of space, texture, and structure. Through light and shadow, Hervé defined the dialogue between substance and form. By delineating a strong contrast between light and shadow as well as placing emphasis on building details, the photographer was able to communicate the depth of a room, the surface of a wall, or the strength of a building's framework.

Résumé:
French photographer Jérémie Souteyrat presents some of the best private houses in his adopted city of Tokyo. A documentary photographer by trade, it was only after moving to Japan that he taught himself how to photograph architecture. His desire to capture the tiny streets of Tokyo led to a personal project where he sought out the most interesting and surprising contemporary houses in the city’s residential neighbourhoods. He spent four years making images of these hidden architectural gems by a range of architects, including firms like Atelier Bow Wow, Go Hasegawa, Sou Fujimoto Architects, Shigeru Ban, and ALX. Includes an interview with Japanese architect Kengo Kuma.

Résumé:
Since March 2000, photographer Joel Sternfeld has been documenting the abandoned elevated railway, the High Line, which runs down the West Side of Manhattan. Sometimes a river of grass, sometimes more like wheat fields of Canada, this unique ruin permits contemplation of nature, and of cityscape. Walking the path of this true time landscape, experiencing the seasons as they unfold in a ribbon within the vertical architectural landscape of New York City, Sternfeld has created a suite of images marked by quiet grace and formal rigor. In Walking the High Line, as in all of his work, landscape is read as a social and cultural indicator.
