Résumé:
Visual artist and theorist Suzanne Anker opened the 2007 international online conference Bioscience and Visual Culture with the following words: "The ubiquitous employment of digital technologies within the practices of research science and medicine, architecture and design, filmmaking and video production, as well as the visual and performing arts, has set ajar a multiplex of communication networks which crisscross traditional boundaries." This volume documents the virtual symposium, which was hosted by the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. and the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Herein, artists, scientists, historians, ethicists, curators, sociologists and writers discuss the myriad intersections between visual culture and the biosciences. The impressive list of international panelists includes Carl Djerassi of Stanford University, Troy Duster of NYU, Marvin Heiferman of SVA, David Freedberg of Columbia University, artist Catherine Chalmers, Art in America Senior Editor Nancy Princenthal and writer Andrew Solomon.

Résumé:
Transformative Avant-Garde and Other Writings is a comprehensive collection of writings by the artist Krzysztof Wodiczko spanning from the 1970s to the present day. Known for his large-scale, politically charged video and slide projections onto prominent architectural structures, this publication explores the development of Wodiczko's political, theoretical and social motivations in relation to his practice. These writings encompass the artist's ongoing critique of public space and his argument for the integral role that art plays in challenging the institutionalised and national narratives inscribed in the architecture of urban environments, and therefore in the democratic process. Working with marginalised city residents since the 1980s as active, critical democratic agents, Wodizcko explores the political and psychological potential of "fearless" or parrhesiastic speaking in the reanimation of our public spaces and monuments.Krzysztof Wodiczko is Professor in Residence at Harvard University and was awarded the Hiroshima Prize in 1998 for his contribution as an artist to world peace.

Résumé:
Shimmering images, inverted worlds: is the city moving or the viewer and - if both - who is quicker, more authentic, more fleeting? Catherine Gfeller’s photographic and video work, based on incessantly pulsating urban landscapes, is autobiographical insofar as it focuses on New York and Paris, but it is hardly private. Everything here is public, yet nothing can really be captured. In other groups of works, the artist takes a thoroughly different look at the symbiotic relationship between mankind and the environment, peering behind the anonymous façades of buildings and exposing intimate living spaces. Speed, exhileration and indulgence: "The only form of stability [can be found] in being ‘lulled by the loop’, as if caught up in the unfathomable delirium of repetition." This volume is being published to accompany three museum exhibitions to be held at the Musée des Beaux-art La Chaux-de-Fonds, the Kunstmuseum Luzern, and the Centre Régional d’Art Contemporain Languedoc-Roussillon Sète.

Résumé:
Since the introduction of the personal computer in the early 1980s, many objects have been designed to have capabilities well beyond their immediate use or appearance. Whether openly and actively or in subtle, subliminal ways, these objects talk to us, and we have come to expect interaction with them. Contemporary designers, besides giving objects form and function, write their initial scripts--the foundation for useful and satisfying conversations. This publication focuses on projects that involve such direct interaction--including interfaces, websites, video games, devices and tools, and information systems--as well as installations that establish practical, emotional, or even sensual connections to cities, companies, governmental institutions, or other individuals. The featured objects range in date from the late 1980s to today, with particular attention given to the last five years and projects currently in development. Organized thematically, it introduces design practices that are increasingly crucial to our world and demonstrates how rich and deep the influence of design will be on our future.

Résumé:
Vancouver photographer and video artist Stan Douglas (born 1960) has been celebrated since the late 1980s for his politically freighted retrievals of obsolete technologies and failed utopias. The emphatically narrative character of his films and photographs has made for comparisons with his Vancouver contemporary Jeff Wall, but Douglas also laces his work with a literary engagement, in references to works by Proust, Beckett and other writers. This publication sees Douglas pursue a new direction. It chronicles the burgeoning discipline of press photography in North America during the postwar period, for which Douglas assumes the role of a fictional photographer, creating a series of images hypothetically produced between 1945-1951. Douglas constructed a “mid-century studio” using authentic equipment as well as actors to produce carefully staged, black-and-white photographs that painstakingly emulate the period's obsession with crime scenes, dance, gambling and technology. This volume juxtaposes actual photographs from the era with Douglas' photo-fictions.

Résumé:
Artists have utilized walking as an autonomous form of art, a subject in their work, and as social practice since the early 20th century. Today walking continues to offer a salient means for artists to challenge social, political, and economic orders through a radical remapping of civic space. In this book, Lexi Lee Sullivan traces the history of walking as an aesthetic action from the Dadaists to contemporary ramblers. Titled after Michelangelo Pistoletto’s performance Walking Sculpture, the catalogue features 50 color illustrations ranging from photographs of Yvonne Rainer’s street actions to Francis Alÿs’s fantastical processions, poems by Cole Swensen, and a new project by artist Helen Mirra, who produces poetic meditations on landscape, ecology, and locomotion. Sculpture, film, video, photography, and performance converge to address the multi-disciplinary practice of ambulation through the cityscape and the countryside. For those who hike; march in fundraisers, protests, or parades; walk the dog; stroll in the park; or commute daily, this catalogue will invite new thought into basic human movement.

Résumé:
Sluminsider is a choral narrative that attempts to reveal the complexity of the slum of Mathare, one of the biggest shantytowns in Nairobi. The project of expansion of a street school, the Why Not Junior Academy, and the process of environmental improvement of the surrounding area, where a community agriculture initiative has been set up to replace an unauthorized dump, is the starting point from which to combine experiences and identities from very different disciplines, including architecture, design, agriculture, photography and video. This project is one of the case studies used for comparison and dialogue with the city of São Paulo and the São Paulo Calling research project, which examined the informal settlements of Rome, Nairobi, Medellin, Mumbai, Moscow and Baghdad. For six months, an exhibition analyzed the characteristics, differences and causes of informal settlements, developing six workshops in the field in different favelas of São Paulo and organizing size encounters that made São Paulo the world capital of the debate on transformation of contemporary cities.
