Before his death in 2007, Gutman wrote a new introduction for the book, its chapters, and each of the included essays. The fourteen essays included here are the rare case of valuable historical documents that remain relevant to architects practicing today. Editors added twelve dialogues by some of Gutman's former students, now some of the best-known architects and theorists of today: Bryan Bell, Deborah Berke, Peggy Deamer, Frank Duffy, etc.

Résumé:
In recent years the idea of sacred space has not been considered a relevant topic in contemporary architecture, a neglect that is even more pronounced in terms of debates about the city. The texts and projects collected together in this book aim to redress this oversight, and re-open a contemporary understanding and discussion of the architecture of sacred space. The book itself is the result of a year-long investigation on the nature of sacred space and its manifestation developed in the AA’s Diploma Unit 14. It consists of design proposals that range from a multi-faith school in Strasbourg to the reconstruction of a festival hall in the city of Xian, China; from a Jesuit monastery in Detroit to a women’s Islamic centre in Paris. Each proposal is introduced by critical texts that analyse the political and ideological meaning of religious architecture. The book is complemented by essays by Pier Vittorio Aureli, Maria Sheherazade Giudici and Hamed Khosravi that focus on the relationship between forms of worship and architecture, and argue that within sacred space form must follow function – in other words, architectural space must adhere to the rituals through which the sacred is enacted, and that the meaning of sacred space goes far beyond the stereotypes of contemplation and spirituality, and instead aligns with the political and social ethos of the city.

Résumé:
"Architecture, film, and the in-between: spatio-cinematic betwixt" looks at the cinematic representation of architectural in-betweenness, as well as the in-between spaces within the architectural structure of films. As films seek to depict architecture in evolving, original ways, they can also expand betwixt areas, imbuing them with horror or fantasy. Spies can escape inside unconvincingly stable ducts and children can slide through pipes with no discernible function. And just as subway routes and airplanes can stitch together two destinations, loopholes and magic architectural features can connect distinct realms via interstitial spaces. Contributors discuss a range of architects and filmmakers, including John Lautner, David Lynch, Christopher Nolan, Agnès Varda, and Mies van der Rohe, and take diverse approaches to the liminal space between architecture and film, touching on existential experience, post-phenomenological thinking, sociopolitical cinearchitecture, fictive ecologies, and more. Collecting essays by well-respected architects, thinkers, and philosophers—such as Juhani Pallasmaa, Beatriz Colomina, and Graham Harman—the book includes imagery and infographics that map filmic spaces, diagram narratives, and visualize the hidden spatial dimensions of movies.

Résumé:
The Gateway Arch casts its shadow across the Mississippi River and the city skyline of St. Louis, yet the history of architecture in that city stretches far beyond the towering "gateway to the West." Modern Architecture in St. Louis offers the first in-depth survey of the exciting evolution of modern architecture in the heart of the Midwest, an evolution that began during the flowering of mid-century American modernism. Established architectural scholars here explore the nationally and internationally significant aspects of modern architecture in St. Louis during the postwar period, with essays on subjects ranging from the creation of the Arch to the role played by the Washington University School of Architecture. Archival photographs and drawings augment the scholars' historical analyses, and statements by alumni and faculty of the School of Architecture, including Gyo Obata and Fumihiko Maki, are also featured. Modern Architecture in St. Louis is a valuable work of architectural history that unearths the critical contribution of St. Louis to American design and modernism. Eric Mumford is associate professor at the Washington University School of Architecture and author of The CIAM Discourse on Urbanism, 1928-1960.

Of course, the idea of an architecture that responds to site; draws on local building traditions, materials, and crafts; and strives to create a sense of community is not new. Yet, the way it has evolved in the past few years is indeed defining a new movement. From the rammed-earth houses of Rick Joy and Pacific Northwest timber houses of Tom Kundig, to the community-built structures of Rural Studio and Francis Kere, designers everywhere are championing an architecture that exists from, in, and for a specific place.

Résumé:
The architecture and design of trade fairs and exhibitions is undergoing a radical transformation: just as in TV advertising, the functional or aesthetic qualities of the products are being pushed into the background and instead emphasis is placed on creating an ideal but illusive world where man and his wishes are at the forefront. This new integrated approach to company presentation was realised by the firm Audi at the motor car fairs 1999/2000. Architect Christoph Ingenhoven and communications designer Michael Keller joined forces to help create a specific world which would promote the company and its products through the interaction of visual, acoustic, symbolic and material elements. In the form of dual reports from the perspectives of the architect and the communications designer, this book provides insight into this new concept of company presentation at trade shows. It offers a thought-provoking contribution to the debate about integrated, interdisciplinary approaches apparent in all areas of the world about us.

Résumé:
Since Greek antiquity the human body has been regarded as a microcosm of universal harmony. In this book an international group of architects, architectural historians, and theorists examines the relation of the human body and architecture. The essays view well-known buildings, texts, paintings, ornaments, and landscapes from the perspective of the body’s physical, psychological, and spiritual needs and pleasures. Topics include Greek temples; the churches of Tadao Ando in Japan; Renaissance fortresses and paintings; the body, space, and dwelling in Wright’s and Schindler’s houses in North America; the corporeal dimension of Carlo Scarpa’s landscapes and gardens; theory from Vitruvius to the Renaissance and Enlightenment; and Freudian psychoanalysis. The essays are framed by an appreciation of architectural historian and theorist Joseph Rykwert’s influential work on the subject. Written for a symposium in honour of Joseph Rykwert held in March 1996 at the University of Pennsylvania.
