Résumé:
Until recently, the construction of the cityscape tended to entail the subjugation of nature and landscape; the consequences of this approach have been climate change, water shortages and the loss of biodiversity. The twenty-first-century city must abide by a new model that deploys creative, sustainable solutions and a more holistic approach to urban development. Return of Landscape probes the future of the city, not only as a living space but also as the creative center of tomorrow’s society. Through spectacular aerial photographs by Alex S. MacLean, it compares the two extreme examples of Las Vegas and Venice--two very different cities currently struggling with similar ecological problems. In addition to these case studies, the book includes articles by leading experts in architecture and urban development.

Field Guide to the Street Trees of New York City acquaints New Yorkers and visitors alike with fifty species of trees commonly found in the neighborhoods where people live, work, and travel. Beautiful, original drawings of leaves and stunning photographs of bark, fruit, flower, and twig accompany informative descriptions of each species. Detailed maps of the five boroughs identify all of the city's neighborhoods, and specific addresses pinpoint where to find a good example of each tree species. Trees provide invaluable benefits to the Big Apple: they reduce the rate of respiratory disease, increase property values, cool homes and sidewalks in the summer, block the harsh winds of winter, clean the air, absorb storm water runoff, and provide habitat and food for the city's wildlife.

Résumé:
Ecologies of Urbanism in India explores how rapidly proliferating and resource-intensive urbanism affects everyday lived environments and the ecological processes that undergird them in Indian cities. Case studies on nature conservation in the city, urban housing and slum development, waste management, the history and practice of urban planning, and contestations over the quality of air, water, and sanitation in the major cities of Delhi and Mumbai, illuminate the urban ecology perspective at different points across the twentieth century. The book therefore examines how struggles over the environment and quality of life in urban centers are increasingly framed in terms of their future place in a landscape of global sustainability, and the future relationship between cities and their changing hinterlands.

Louis Kahn' National Assembly building in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is regarded by many as his greatest masterpiece and one of the wonders of modern architecture. The octagonal main Parliament building is framed by eight hostel blocks--all built in local red brick, lawns and an artificial lake symbolizing the significance of water in Bangladesh. The striking simplicity of the exterior, consisting of only concrete and bands of inlaid marble, is broken up by a variety of recessed geometric shapes which create hollow spaces to allow for sunlight and air to circulate the entire building complex. Grischa Rüschendorf’s stunning architectural photos, some depicting so far unseen areas, invite you to explore the rarely visited building, and how this timeless masterpiece has stood the test of time.

Résumé:
Los Angeles--the place without a sense of place, famous for sprawl and overdevelopment and defined by its car-clogged freeways--might seem inhospitable to efforts to connect with nature and community. But in Reinventing Los Angeles, educator and activist Robert Gottlieb describes how imaginative and innovative social movements have coalesced around the issues of water development, cars and freeways, and land use, to create a more livable and sustainable city. Gottlieb traces the emergence of Los Angeles as a global city in the twentieth century and describes its continuing evolution today. He examines the powerful influences of immigration and economic globalization as they intersect with changes in the politics of water, transportation, and land use, and illustrates each of these core concerns with an account of grass roots and activist responses: efforts to reenvision the concrete-bound, fenced-off Los Angeles River as a natural resource; "Arroyofest," the closing of the Pasadena Freeway for a Sunday of walking and bike riding; and immigrants’ initiatives to create urban gardens and connect with their countries of origin. Reinventing Los Angeles is a unique blend of personal narrative (Gottlieb himself participated in several of the grass roots actions described in the book) and historical and theoretical discussion. It provides a road map for a new environmentalism of everyday life, demonstrating the opportunities for renewal in a global city. Robert Gottlieb is Henry R. Luce Professor of Urban and Environmental Policy and Director of the Urban and Environmental Policy Institute at Occidental College in Los Angeles. He is the author of Environmentalism Unbound: Exploring New Pathways for Change (MIT Press), Forcing the Spring: The Transformation of the American Environmental Movement, and other books.
