Résumé:
This publication covers ten years of the AIA Small Project Awards program. Enough time has passed to meaningfully revisit and showcase previous award winning work, and to provide a record for readers to take stock of the evolution of the Small Project Awards program as a whole. Organized into four chapters Objects and Pavilions, Houses, Details, and Adaptive Reuse/Interiors this book reveals that small projects have properties, uses, foci, and contexts that are distinct from architecture that operates at larger scales.

Résumé:
Re-readings responds to remodelling as a distinct discipline, making sense of the considerable structural, aesthetic, environmental, contextual and programmatic challenges of remodelling existing buildings. Illustrated throughout with a rich international portfolio of case studies, it explains the theory behind the way that architects and designers interpret and adapt buildings. It proposes that the complete analysis of the history, fabric and function of a building is key to designing its successful reuse, an exercise that Giancarlo de Carlo called ‘the revelatory capacity of reading'.

Résumé:
This publication brings to light a movement of diverse professionals from around the world who address this fundamental theme: the reuse of materials with architectonic purpose. Though the results are as varied as the designers, all their proposals stem from the intention of giving new life to what had been thrown out. Complementing the built work shown here, the book presents a series of initiatives aimed at promoting the use of waste in architecture, and articles that illustrate a wide panorama of the contemporary recycling culture.

Résumé:
Architecture builds upon history. Even the avant-gardist creed to “make it new” still assumes a past. It is impossible to imagine novelty without an awareness of what existed before. This is even more true for the reuse and appropriation of existing structures, where designers take a stance relative to the past. In their transformation projects the office of(...)

Résumé:
Architecture builds upon history. Even the avant-gardist creed to “make it new” still assumes a past. It is impossible to imagine novelty without an awareness of what existed before. This is even more true for the reuse and appropriation of existing structures, where designers take a stance relative to the past. In their transformation projects the office of diederendirrix architects retell stories of buildings and sites – by paraphrasing part of the story, by recasting central actors, by making architecture speak in other words. In so doing, they make it anew.

Résumé:
For architects, designing adaptive reuse projects for buildings originally constructed for religious purposes is a challenging task. Different approaches to transforming historic structures often spark intense debate. The three projects examined in this issue’s special feature on the future of preservation illustrate different interpretations of the principles set forth in the ''Charter of Krakow'' (2000), a document aimed at establishing common ground. In addition, the magazine zooms in on Max Núñez Arquitectos through an interview with the architect and selected projects, including the Hogar Alemán Elderly Care Home and MUSEAT Atacama Regional Museum, both in Chile.

Résumé:
In recent decades, citizens active in urban governance have taken up their roles as autonomous subjects, negotiating with governmental actors on the reuse of vacant buildings while representing the wishes of fellow residents to create self-managed communal spaces that are open to neighbourhood residents. They have appropriated vacant properties — and, where possible, constructed new buildings — in line with their own interests, those of civic groups, and the common good. They work to create affordable working, living, cultural and community places in an increasingly commercialised urban environment. In this publication, these civic actors are referred to as citizen professionals (CPs).

Résumé:
''Re-Thinking Re-Use'' is a dialogue and collaboration between Dutch and Japanese (building) cultures, where differing perspectives enrich and inspire one another. By learning from each other’s traditions and views on old, new and change, the project seeks a new and guiding balance. It embraces the reuse and transformation of existing buildings, structures and materials, encouraging an exchange between generations of architects and builders, and between innovation and craftsmanship. At a time when the construction sector faces the ecological impact of its actions, ''Re-Thinking Re-Use'' offers a sustainable perspective, rooted in continuity and evolution within the built environment.
