Résumé:
Orri Jónsson was holidaying one summer in the north of Iceland with his family, when he stumbled upon an abandoned farmhouse and began taking photos of it. Fascinated with the results but disappointed by the restrictions of the 35mm film he had used, he returned to the motif with a large-format analogue camera. Orri thus photographed the gloriously decaying interiors of deserted houses throughout Iceland for the next 12 years, and ''Interiors'' contains the best of these images from 1999 to 2010. Painterly in color, rigorous in composition and lacking people, Orri's photos evoke the personal histories of the inhabitants who long ago abandoned their homes. Interiors is shaped by an uncanny silence and sense of loss, most poignant in the images of objects people left behind--old buttons, newspapers and even a hot water bottle--tokens of vanished lives.

Résumé:
The unresolved limits of the post-capitalist city give rise to interventions in the city and the contemporary landscape in which the planner has to rely on a knowledge of other fields. The inevitable multidisciplinary activity at these frontiers has been an object of study during recent decades. This book brings together these reflections and some of their achievements in projects whose common denominator is their condition of marginality, of contiguity with prior structures with which they try to establish connections and continuities. The four parts into which the book is divided make reference to projectural policies conditioned by work on the boundaries of the pre-existing and to the interpretation of their settings: stretches of water, infrastructures, cultural and artificial natures. Analysed here are border zones, edges, frontiers and fringes of the contemporary city with itself, with nature, and with the boundaries between the natural and the colonised landscape.

Résumé:
Bob Thall has been photographing the skyline and streets of Chicago for over thirty years, and here in "At City's Edge" he chronicles the twenty-five mile shoreline where the asphalt meets the inland sea. Thall's stark yet rich images take viewers from the Evanston border on the North Shore down to 100th Street on the South Side, documenting the natural scenery, architectural structures, and people that populate the coastline. From the lakefront parks to summer beaches to the Air and Water Show, Chicago enfolds Lake Michigan into its urban character, but Thall's images make clear that the lake remains a dynamic and powerful force, with nature and civilization clashing at its rim. "At City's Edge" brings the lakefront to life in all its complexity, chronicling in its elegant visual sequence the sand-covered city beaches, the rock-studded shoreline, the running paths, and the buildings built along this unique intersection.

Résumé:
The work of the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson (born in Copenhagen, 1967) focuses on sensorial perception, the laws of physics and natural phenomena. He works in a variety of media, but is particularly known for his sculptural installations for specific places. His use of light, water, ice and clouds in these spaces is a reflection of his Icelandic roots, and the complexity and diversity of his work have made him a point of reference in the current international art scene. Olafur Eliasson was awarded the Joan Miro Prize in 2007 for his status as one of the leading artists of our times. His work has been shown in major museums around the world. "Light Lab" was at the Portikus centre in Frankfurt and "Take your Time:Olafur Eliasson," a retrospective for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art that was later exhibited in the MoMA in New York.

Résumé:
In the follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut monograph "Sleeping by the Mississippi", Alec Soth turned his eye to another iconic body of water, Niagara Falls. As with his photographs of the Mississippi, Soth’s pictures of Niagara are less about natural wonder than human desire. “I went to Niagara for the same reason as the honeymooners and suicide jumpers,” says Soth, “the relentless thunder of the Falls just calls for big passion.” Working over the course of two years on both the American and Canadian sides of the Falls using a large-format 8x10 camera, the photographs are rigorously composed and richly detailed. Soth depicts newlyweds and naked lovers, motel parking lots and pawn shop wedding rings. Throughout the book, Soth has interspersed a number of love letters from the subjects he photographed. We read about teenage crushes, workplace affairs, heartbreak and suicide.

Résumé:
Since the 1990's, Olafur Eliasson has been exploring cognitive and physical phenomena as we know them from the natural sciences and nature. He uses both technically sophisticated equipment and deceptively simple means such as water or light to create artificial landscapes and moments of perception that let viewers perceive or reenact natural phenomena. Their strongly atmospheric but entirely constructed nature makes viewers become painfully conscious of how far modern civilization has progressed from immediate experience; they question the acceptance of authenticity in the area of perception. This book, published in an edition of only 1,500 copies and conceived in cooperation with the artist, features a series of landscape photographs by Eliasson from his native Iceland, exploring the limits and conventions of our traditional view of landscape. They show that our perception of nature has been fundamentally affected by cultural influences, memories, and expectations.

Résumé:
Specializing in the design of museum and gallery spaces, hospitality, commercial retail and residential projects, Miami-based Rene Gonzalez Architects also endeavors to develop solutions to rising sea levels in coastal communities. This volume compiles drawings and photographs of a residence on Prairie Avenue in Miami designed by the firm in 2018. Inspired by red mangrove trees, the dwelling hovers entirely above the ground plane. A lush garden covers most of the site and absorbs enormous quantities of water. Charles Renfro celebrates the building thus: "Is this blown-up modernism, a house made of fragments and gaps, also a new gay architecture? If so, it is but one of the many ways this compact complex house performs, one that in so many ways pulls modernism forward into a brave new world of sensuality, sexuality and lifestyle. Within it, social progress has found a new architecture."

Résumé:
An ancient building method that has experienced a renaissance in recent years as people seek greener and more sustainable building materials and construction methods, rammed earth is a wall building technique that uses earth, chalk, lime and gravel as raw materials. Naturally insulating, non-combustible, and durable, they can be labor intensive to construct without machinery and are susceptible to water damage if not properly protected or maintained. Nevertheless, rammed earth buildings are found on almost every continent, in a range of environments from the humid, to the semi-arid and temperate – from simple single-family dwellings to large and complex multistory buildings. Alongside green building considerations, the availability of the natural components and a design suited to local climatic conditions are key factors which favor their use. "Down to earth" is a compilation of some of the most interesting recent examples of this interesting and unusual building technique.
