Résumé:
A new world is emerging in China, with urbanization and the wholesale globalization of daily life moving at unprecedented speed. The Communist Party line has been replaced by maxims about working together to build a modern, economically resilient country. Cities are being rigorously adapted to fit this new vision, with disastrous consequences for existing structures and neighborhoods. Social and societal balances have been swiftly, radically altered. Can Chinese identity survive in a consumer society and a radically transformed urban environment, both conceived on a Western model? This first interdisciplinary overview of the country’s contemporary arts, architecture, urban planning and visual culture--including television, photography, newspapers, games and blogs - offers the work of some 20 Chinese artists considering these issues, and projects by some 10 Chinese architectural firms. "China contemporary" finds that a mix of long standing tradition, decades of Communism and hurriedly translated Western capitalism have resulted in an exciting visual and formal idiom.

Résumé:
Set behind the grand houses of Georgian and Victorian London, intimately scaled mews originally served as accommodation for coaches and horses.?After the advent of the motorcar in the early twentieth century, these secluded courts and alleys began to be converted for residential use, favoured by artists and bohemians.?As they grew in popularity, mews also became popular as sites for new-build homes. Often these were of a radically experimental nature, challenging established notions of domesticity in the heart of the?historic city. ''At Home in London: The Mews House'' documents?seventeen examples of this rich tradition dating from the 1960s to the present day, with new photography and extensive drawings.?The self-built houses of architects feature particularly prominently,?including those of John Winter, Ted and Roz Cullinan, and Peter St John and Siw Thomas.?Acclaimed architecture critic Ellis Woodman narrates the history of this perennially popular type from its early pioneers including potter Lucie Rie through the potential of the mews as a model for new residential development, exemplified by Peter Barber’s monumental Edgewood Mews (2022) and Al-Jawad Pike’s?Chowdhury Walk (2023).

Résumé:
Much more than a resort destination, Palm Springs has served as a laboratory of the Modern; here so much architectural innovation and design took form. From the steel-and-glass boxes of Richard Neutra to the earthy organic homes of John Lautner, and everything in between, the solutions of architects and designers—including notably William F. Cody, E. Stewart Williams, and Albert Frey—were diverse and are ever more relevant in the face of contemporary challenges. Their answers addressed questions that still hold urgency: How to design sustainably in harsh climates? How to use technology efficiently and creatively to meet those challenges? How to build affordable and high-quality mass-produced housing? How to reflect a region’s culture, economy, and distinctive atmosphere? Architects here responded to nature’s climatological demands, and Palm Springs became a center for innovations that were rooted in practice more than theory. Benefitting from the architectural freedoms offered by the remoteness of the California desert, designers explored new approaches that we can now identify as central to the Palm Springs School, shown here in rich archival and contemporary photography.
