Résumé:
Shot in Dungeness, on the coast of England, this series by Berlin-based photographer Shinichiro Shiraishi is influenced by memories of his childhood visits to his grandparents’ home in the Japanese countryside. It also reflects a realisation that emerged from his time there: that natural and human-made are both part of the landscape and a part of nature. The duality of Dungeness is replicated by the book’s design – images shimmer, black pages balance white, adder stones puncture paper. To visualise the coexistence between natural and artificial objects, 90 photos have been subjected to analogue and digital processes, bringing us closer to the emotions of this peripheral place.

Résumé:
It is a known fact that manmade climate change is especially prominent in alpine topography. The Austrian photographer Michael Goldgruber examines the marginal parts of glacier, snow, and rock zones with a critical eye. Goldgruber’s photographic works show sections of these landscapes that reflect a human dilemma – the longing for romantic landscape images on the one hand, and the reality of the countryside as altered by human activity on the other. Unlike classic landscape panoramas with their idealized images of nature, in Goldgruber’s works there is often no horizon, the proportions and scale remain unclear, the ice and rock formations fill the picture completely. The alpine world becomes an actor in its own right – it crumbles, melts, transforms.

Résumé:
At first glance a children’s book, Jeane D'aam’s illustrated story is actually an introduction to modern Dutch architecture. Everything starts with a square. A square can be rotated, doubled, divided in two, and then again in four. Its corners can then be cut, stretched, and more. One page at a time, the shape of a house begins to appear. The Dutch, however, love houses with low roofs in the countryside, so these shapes change again to become hexagonal. In cities, on the other hand, a lot of rectangular houses are needed, perhaps joined together by a bridge. Finally, by adding doors, windows, and a touch of colour, this series of geometric shapes turns into perfect Dutch houses.

Résumé:
Daido Moriyama's work is characterised by powerful, high contrast black-and-white pictures, concentrating on the little-seen parts of the city and highlighting the effects of industrialisation on modern life in Japan. He has showcased his photography in dozens of extremely influential artists books which have had an enormous impact on the world of photography. One of these is Tales of Tono, first published in 1976, which features work shot in the countryside of northern Honshu, Japan. Taking its name from a collection of Japanese rural folk legends, its non-narrative diptychs display a nascent nostalgia, whilst the formal qualities of the photos embrace the grainy and raw techniques that Moriyama brought to his more urban subject matter.

In 1925, the artists Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious moved to the village of Great Bardfield in the countryside of Essex, England. Over time, other artists came to the village, forming a community of artists and designers that remains active today. In the 1950s, these artists, including Bawden, Ravilious, John Aldridge, Michael Rothenstein, and Marianne Straub, among others, held now-famous “open house” exhibitions, displaying their modernist works to the public in their own homes. These informal shows brought acclaim to the artists, and also brought thousands of visitors to the quaint village. This illustrated book shows how that community, and its neigh- boring landscape, nurtured a distinctive style of art, design, and illustration

Résumé:
The gardens and estate of La Foce constitute one of the most important and best kept early twentieth-century gardens in Italy. Amid 3,500 acres of farmland in the countryside near Pienza, with sweeping views of the Tuscan landscape, La Foce was the childhood dream garden of the late writer Marchesa Iris Origo. Passionate about the order and symmetry of Florentine gardens, Origo and her husband, Antonio, purchased the dilapidated villa in 1924, soliciting the help of English architect and family friend Cecil Pinsent to reawaken the natural magic of the property. Pinsent designed the structure of simple, elegant, box-edged beds and green enclosures that give shape to the Origos' shrubs, perennials, and vines, and created a garden of soaring cypress walks, native cyclamen, lawns, and wildflower meadows. Today the garden is a place of unusual and striking beauty, a green oasis in the barren Siena countryside. Situated in the Val d'Orcia, a wide valley in southeastern Tuscany that seems to exist on a larger, wilder scale than the rest of the Tuscan landscape, it is run by Benedetta and Donata Origo, and is open to the public one day a week. "La Foce : a garden and landscape in Tuscany" includes a historical essay and memoir by the daughter of La Foce's creators, Antonio and Iris Origo, along with photographs, sketches, and a critical analysis of the gardens. The volume not only focuses on the beauty of the gardens themselves and their indisputable merit as fascinating works of landscape architecture but also sees them within the context of both the larger Tuscan topography and the wider landscape of geography and history.
