Résumé:
Since the invention of photography in the nineteenth century, Africa has been defined largely by Western images of its cultures and traditions. From the colonial carte de visite and ethnographic archive to the rise of studio portraiture and social documents of racial surveillance, the fraught relationship between Africa and the photographic lens has become inseparable from the discourses of post-colonialism. Challenging these dominant images of exoticism and otherness, this book illustrates how photography has allowed artists to reimagine African histories through the lens of the present, to shape our understanding of the contemporary realities we face. Bringing together a diverse range of artists and thinkers to present varied perspectives on issues such as cultural heritage and restitution, spirituality, urbanism and climate change, it reveals how innovative contemporary photography challenges perceptions of history, culture and identity.

Résumé:
Liam Gillick has written a holistic genealogy of contemporary art that addresses art’s engagement with history, even when it seems apathetic or blind to current events. Rather than focus on dominant works or special cases, Gillick takes a broad view of artistic creation from 1820 to today, underscoring the industry and intelligence of artists as they have responded to incremental developments in science, politics, and technology. The great innovations and dislocations of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have their place in this timeline, but their traces are alternately amplified and diminished as Gillick moves through artistic reactions to liberalism, mass manufacturing, psychology, nuclear physics, automobiles, and a host of other advances. He intimately ties the origins of the contemporary artist to the social and technological adjustments of modern life, which artists struggled to incorporate truthfully into their works.

Résumé:
We are witnessing a time of unprecedented migration to urban centres, and as such it is imperative to analyse what makes communities thrive. The density and urban fabric of neighbourhoods has a direct influence on the frequency and opportunity of interaction of locals. Nurturing and maintaining public amenities, green spaces, and infrastructure – both visible and invisible – in turn nurtures community as a whole and society at large. Among the sixteen featured projects are a scout hut in Copenhagen, a media library in Tbilisi, a grocery store in Italy, a community centre in Costa Rica, a bamboo sports hall for a school in Thailand, and an educational park in Colombia.
