Landscape ecology focuses on spatial heterogeneity, or the idea that where things are and where they are in relation to other things can have important consequences for a wide range of phenomena. Landscape ecology integrates humans with natural ecosystems and brings a spatial perspective to such fields as natural resource management, conservation, and urban planning. The thirty-seven papers included in this volume present the origins and development of landscape ecology and encompass a variety of perspectives, approaches, and geographies. The editors begin with articles that illuminate the discipline's diverse scientific foundations, such as L. S. Berg's keystone paper outlining a geoecological analysis based on soil science, physical geography, and geology. Next they include selections exemplifying landscape ecologists' growing awareness of spatial pattern, the different ways they incorporated scale into their work, the progression of landscape ecology from a qualitative to a quantitative discipline, and how concepts from landscape ecology have come to permeate ecological research and influence land-use policy, conservation practices, landscape architecture, and geography. Together these articles provide a solid introduction to what is now widely recognized as an important area of research and application that encourages new ways of thinking about natural and human-dominated ecosystems.

Résumé:
The outcome of three lectures held at SCI-Arc in Los Angeles in March 2012 – given by Peter Eisenman, Jeffery Kipnis, and Thom Mayne – this book introduces the interrelation of these events in the form of an abstract symposium about the current state of the discipline, and about its role at the school. It combines with the real symposium on the thesis content that took place, which ultimately became a running commentary on contemporary architecture. The intersection of intros, debates, lectures, and audience queries framed each proposition as a provisional hypothesis immediately subject to challenge and reformulation. With contributions by Eric Owen Moss.

Résumé:
The gardener labours to harmonize nature's most subtle forms with his or her own most elaborate plans. Gardens present a succession of ever-rephrased dialogues between nature and culture, design and delight, work and play. Yet they are also mutable and fragile, vulnerable to the rigors of the changing seasons. The most stimulating thought and research on the history of the garden from the fifteenth century to the present day are organized chronologically here in sections that cover the humanist garden in Renaissance Italy; the Baroque garden and classical park; picturesque, arcadian, and sublime gardens of the Enlightenment; mazes, grottoes, and other curiosities; town and city parks; and even Disneyland. In each section, individual gardens are analyzed as paradigms of their type: the Hortus Palatinus in Heidelberg, the Parc Monceau in Paris, Stowe in England, and many others, including contemporary gardens designed by Roberto Burle Marx, Ian Hamilton Finlay, and Geoffrey Jellicoe. Many hitherto unrecorded examples are detailed, and well-known aspects of the history of the garden are reinterpreted from totally new perspectives. The essays are supported by paintings, reliefs, and drawings as well as figurative illustrations and photographs. A specially commissioned series of fifty-one plans of each epoch's most significant gardens completes this survey of the evolution of the Western garden.
