Résumé:
Jules Stewart tells the story of an iconic city in a time of change. After the roaring twenties, the catastrophic Wall Street Crash and ensuing Depression seemed to spell disaster for the vibrant city. Yet, in this era, New York underwent an architectural, economic, social and creative renaissance under the leadership of the charismatic mayor Fiorello La Guardia. After seizing power, he declared war on the mafia mobs running vast swathes of the city, attacked political corruption and kick-started the economy through a variety of construction and infrastructure projects. In culture, this was the age of the Harlem Renaissance championed by writers like Langston Hughes, the jazz age with the advent of Tin-Pan Alley, the Cotton Club and immortals such as Duke Ellington making his name in the Big Apple.

Résumé:
The Villa d'Este is a 16th-century villa in Tivoli, near Rome, internationally renowned for its terraced hillside Italian Renaissance garden containing an outstanding array of fountains, nymphaea, grottoes, water features and atmospheric sound effects. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, the garden is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of Italian Renaissance gardens in Europe. Villa d’Este was first conceived of in 1550 by the governor of Tivoli, Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, who had long envisioned a garden built on the slopes of the valley known as Valle Gaudente. But it was only after 1560 that the villa’s architectural and iconological blueprint was defined by painter-archaeologist-architect Pirro Ligorio and executed by court architect Alberto Galvani. When Ippolito d’Este died in 1572, the project was nearly complete.

Résumé:
Magnificent Buildings, Splendid Gardens returns to print some of the most important works of David Coffin, a leading authority on Renaissance architecture who, as one of the first scholars to apply the tools of art history to the study of gardens, became a founder of the discipline of garden and landscape studies. These essays span the wide range of Coffin's work, from Italian Renaissance architecture, garden design, sculpture, and drawings to English gardens and landscape designers of the seventeenth to early nineteenth centuries. Coffin's approaches are as varied as his subject matter. Some of these essays present the results of his archival research, including his discovery of crucial documents on the Emilian architect Giovan Battista Aleotti and the only documentary evidence identifying Vignola as the architect of the Villa Lante at Bagnaia. Other essays take a much broader cultural view, investigating, for example, the phenomenon of public access to private Renaissance gardens, elucidating the evolving meaning of images of the goddess Venus in English gardens, and identifying the significance of the decorative programs of monuments as diverse as the Villa Belvedere in Rome and the eighteenth-century gardens at Rousham in Oxfordshire. The book also includes a commentary on each essay, written by one of Coffin's former students; a full analytical index; and a complete bibliography of Coffin's work.

Résumé:
In paintings, murals, and book illustrations, Aaron Douglas (1899–1979) produced the most powerful visual legacy of the Harlem Renaissance, prompting the philosopher and writer Alain Locke to dub him the “father of Black American art.” Presenting more than ninety illustrations of Douglas’s works and the commentary of leading critics and historians, this book focuses on the artist’s career from the 1920s through the 1940s in relation to American modernism. Its authors argue that Douglas’s bold work opened doors for African American artists in Harlem and beyond, and that it invited a dialogue with modernism that put African American life, labor, and freedom, along with African traditions and motifs, at its center. New information emerges from these pages, reflecting the rich interchange between the visual arts, music, dance, literature, and politics that shaped Douglas’s work and also defined the Harlem Renaissance.

Résumé:
Andrea Palladio published two enormously popular guides to the churches and antiquities of Rome in 1554. Striving to be both scholarly and popular, Palladio invited his Renaissance readers to discover the charm of Rome’s ancient and medieval wonders, and to follow pilgrimage routes leading from one church to the next. He also described ancient Roman rituals of birth, marriage, and death. Here translated into English and joined in a single volume, Palladio’s guidebooks allow modern visitors to enjoy Rome exactly as their predecessors did 450 years ago. Enhanced with illustrations and commentary, the book also includes the first full English translation of Raphael’s letter to Pope Leo X on the monuments of ancient Rome. For architectural historians, tourists, and armchair travelers, this book offers insights into the antiquarian and ecclesiastical preoccupations of one of the Renaissance architectural masters.
