Résumé:
Since 2004, Wienerberger AG, the world’s largest manufacturer of bricks and other clay building materials, has biannually presented the international Brick Award in recognition of outstanding achievements in brick architecture. The tenth edition of this masterclass in 2022 saw 789 submissions from fifty-three countries, which were reviewed by an international jury of experts. This book features the shortlist of fifty nominees and the winning designs in five categories. All of them are presented through concise texts, atmospheric images, as well as site and floorplans, views, elevations, and sections. Topical essays by architect Matevz Celik, architecture historian Anna Cymer, publicist Wojciech Czaja, professor of architecture Isabella Leber, and architect Henrietta Palmer round out this survey of contemporary brick architecture.

The approach of Informing Architecture by Materiality opens the way to an innovative use of materials in the design professions. Taking material qualities and properties such as texture, elasticity, transparency and fluidity as a point of departure, the concept described and employed here transcends the conventional definitions of building materials. Instead, the focus is on a multitude of material operations, like folding and bending, carving and cutting, weaving and knitting, mirroring and screening. Nine chapters deal with surfaces and layers, joints and juctions, weaving and texturing, nanoscale transformations, responsiveness, the integration of ephemeral factors like wind and light as well as material collections providing professional resources.

Résumé:
One of the essential effects of sustainability, not only in architecture, is the consideration to the objects' life span. From the moment when a building is required to be highly efficient, it used to be an unknown dimension for architecture; the service life. However, for various reasons currently this new dimension became a part of the project variables: the buildings and their components actually live, with their own biorhythm. The progress has not only seen one direction but it's a cocktail of solutions, in which from the most progressive sorts to the most traditional ones are blended. Ceramics symbolize this historical blend embracing unlimited possible futures in one material. Ceramics represent the millennial past of the inert material. On the other hand their soft nature, hardened by subsequent processes, allows any possibility to the form and technology. That makes ceramics as competitive as any other constructive material by their durability and low maintenance.
