Résumé:
Covering twenty-seven examples, illustrated by newly commissioned drawings and photographs, this volume reflects on the architectural ambitions and lived realities of these quotidian buildings. Architectural and urban designer Karin Templin considers the ways in which the mansion block came to define large areas of the city from Westminster and South Kensington in the nineteenth century to Kilburn and Stratford in the twenty-first. Reflecting London’s development from its consolidation as a metropolis in the high Victorian era to its present efforts to address a longstanding housing crisis, this volume explores the mansion block’s centrality to the capital’s identity and its wider relevance to discussions of housing and urban planning. This book is first in a series on types of London housing, reflecting on the place of the home in the city in the light of its longstanding housing crisis.

Résumé:
This is the first installation of Forensic Architecture Reports, a series of books each dedicated to a single FA investigation, with insights into the agency’s research methodologies, additional texts from and interviews with collaborators, and dossiers of documents that shaped the investigation in question. On the evening of 4 August 2011, Mark Duggan was shot and killed by the police in the north London neighbourhood of Tottenham after the minicab in which he was traveling was pulled over by a team of undercover officers. The team had begun following Duggan shortly after receiving intelligence that he was in possession of a gun, and the officer who shot him testified that he had seen, for a ‘split second’, Duggan aiming the gun at him after he had exited the minicab. However, the gun was not found next to Duggan’s body on the pavement. According to the police, they discovered it in a patch of grass some seven meters away. After a coroner’s inquest ruled Duggan’s killing ‘lawful’ and the police watchdog organisation issued a report siding with the officers’ version of events, the Duggan family’s legal team commissioned Forensic Architecture to conduct an investigation into the critical question at the heart of the case: How did the gun end up in the grass? ?With no video footage of the shooting itself, Forensic Architecture had to rely primarily on the written and oral testimony of the officers involved to develop a spatial investigation designed to test the plausibility of the police’s narrative and to examine whether the officers themselves could have planted the gun...

Résumé:
Mediated Messages presents a collection of original writing exploring the role played by the media in the development of postmodern architecture in the 1970s and 80s. The book's twelve chapters and case-studies examine a range of contemporary periodicals and exhibitions to explore their role in the postmodern. This focus on mediation as a key feature of architectural post-modernism, and the recognition that post-modernism grew out of developments in the media, opens up the possibility of an important new account of post-modernism distinct from existing narratives.

Résumé:
"The architectural project" considers the practice of architectural design as it has developed during the last two centuries. In this challenging interpretation of design education and its effect on design process and products, Argentinean scholar Alfonso Corona-Martínez emphasizes the distinction between an architectural project, created in the architect's mind and materialized as a set of drawings on paper, and the realized three-dimensional building. Corona-Martínez demonstrates how representation plays a substantial role in determining both the notion and the character of architecture, and he traces this relationship from the Renaissance into the Modern era, giving detailed considerations of Functionalism and Typology. His argument clarifies the continuity in the practice of design method through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a continuity that has been obscured by the emphasis on changing goals instead of design procedures.

Modernists of the early twentieth century were transfixed by the X-ray—a means of seeing through skin into systems of bones and tissue. What, nearly a century later, can X-rays reveal about the systems of modernism itself? Résumé:
Malcolm Quantrill made his first visit to Finland half a century ago as a young student from the University of Liverpool, England. Since 1983 Quantrill has published six books on Finnish modern architecture and, in recognition of his contributions to architectural history and theory, he has been the Distinguished Professor of Architecture at Texas A+M University in the USA since 1986. Quantrill and Mäkinen have collaborated since 1987, one result being Quantrill's book in honour of Academician Reima Pietilä, One Man's Odyssey in Search of Finnish Architecture (1988). Matti K. Mäkinen is a prominent Finnish architect who served as Director General of the National Board of Public Building from 1985 until 1994. He has published several books and articles on architecture and urban design. Professor Mäkinen is a former President of The Finnish Association of Architects SAFA and an honorary member of the professional institutes of architects in the USA (FAIA) and in Hungary (MÈSZ). Here the authors engage in dialogues as they explore the present state of architecture and its culture. Under such headings as The Balthusian Dilemma, Stealing a Gem, Heroes and Statues, The Elephant and the Butterfly, they address their theme of The Unmade Bed of Architecture.

Résumé:
Governor-General award winning architect Jeremy Sturgess recently celebrated thirty years in practice in Calgary, where he has been based his whole career. During that time, Sturgess has made a major contribution to transforming the architectural face of the city, from individual houses to large-scale public projects such as the Calgary Water Centre, the Grand Theatre, and Calgarys most recent downtown LRT stations. This publication provides a comprehensive and multifaceted examination of Sturgesss architecture and urban design, and assesses his contribution to Canadian architecture generally and Calgary architecture in particular. Editor Geoffrey Simmins has gathered perspectives from a number of individuals with whom Sturgess has enjoyed long-term professional relationships - an artist, an urban designer, an architect colleague, an architectural critic, and a journalist. Along with reflections on Sturgesss personality, philosophy, and creative growth, these contributors provide in-depth discussions of a number of Sturgesss most celebrated projects. Simmins himself has drawn on Sturgesss papers and several personal interviews to craft an insightful introduction to the volume. Illustrated with architectural line drawings and with photos by photographer Robert Lemermeyer.
