Résumé:
The study of historic preservation theory in the United States has been limited by the lack of a comprehensive anthology of literature spanning the history of thought in the discipline. While a few key texts such as Viollet-le-Duc's "On Restoration" (1854) and John Ruskin's "Lamp of Memory" (1849) have been reprinted ad infinitum, the enormous body of preservation knowledge produced since the Renaissance remains obscure to most American students, who until now have had no easy way to access it. This anthology offers classic texts from the United States, China, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Czech Republic, Spain, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, and more, offering a broad introduction to the history of preservation theory.

Résumé:
Since 1997 Luciano Giubbilei has been creating serenely beautiful gardens in locations on three continents. Giubbilei is known for the understated elegance of his designs, but is constantly evolving his approach, both in response to individual clients and as his ideas develop. His work draws on his Italian heritage, especially the Renaissance gardens of the Villa Gamberaia in Tuscany, and a distinctively classical combination of restraint and opulent materials. This book examines 12 significant gardens from Giubbilei’s portfolio. Each project is fully documented, from the preparation of mood boards to final planting and finishing. Sections on site development, nursery production and the sourcing of plants, and the artists and craftsmen with whom Giubbilei works complete the in-depth account of his working methods and sources of inspiration.

Résumé:
Andrea Palladio’s Renaissance villa architecture is still admired for its elegance and harmony, but little is known about the person behind the buildings. Experienced Palladio researcher Guido Beltramini has worked meticulously on material from historical documents about Palladio’s person and life, and assembled a full picture of the architect. The Private Palladio follows his career, his rise from being the ordinary miller’s son Pietro della Gondola to become the architect Andrea Palladio. Beltramini does not just explore Palladio’s origins, his training as a stonemason, and his complex relationship with powerful clients and scholars, but also his private life: his jovial character, his life as a married man with five children, and not least his profound conviction that architecture can and must enrich life.

Résumé:
The Magic of Things explores a former advertising strategy of Swiss product posters in which banal, everyday objects—butter, a sewing machine, or shoes—are presented as desirable objects enticing us to buy. Free from any further contextualization, the objects acquire a sensual presence and magical aura. The product poster had its heyday in Switzerland in the 1940s with designers such as Niklaus Stoecklin, Peter Birkhauser, or Otto Baumberger. As consumer society developed, however, the exclusive focus on the product and the brand name was no longer enough—in advertising, the feelings associated with the object as it related to life grew increasingly important. Today it is in the cultural poster that the magical depiction of things is experiencing a kind of renaissance.

Résumé:
How and why Palladio has become the most influential architect of the Renaissance and beyond. For more than four and a half centuries, his works have continuously provided a touchstone for architects, not only in the Veneto, where architects were able to scrutinize his works firsthand, but abroad as well. Indeed, his followers are legion; however, the manner in which his oeuvre has been interpreted varied considerably according to time and place. His successors have ranged from those advocating a return to classical orthodoxy to those who have sought to borrow from his work more freely. Yet as the call for architectural reform grew ever more urgent over the course of the eighteenth century, this polysemy came to be overshadowed by a rationalized classical interpretation of Palladio's work.

The Danish design scholar Birgit Lyngbye Pedersen discovered the work of Finn Juhl (1912-1989) when she was looking for a suitable sofa for her 1950s home. Juhl's furniture is undergoing a renaissance at present, and when his house in Charlottenlund--which he designed and decorated in 1941-42--came up for sale, Pedersen purchased the building and all of its furnishings, presenting it immediately afterward to the adjacent Ordrupgaard Museum. This monograph takes a look at Finn Juhl-who, alongside Hans J. Wegner and Arne Jacobsen, is one of the most important Danish modernists-in an agreeable, unpretentious fashion. Per H. Hansen, a renowned expert in Scandinavian furniture design, provides a humorous, extremely informative description of Juhl's unconventional character and his classic furniture

Résumé:
The “old” material of wood has been used to construct dwellings of different types since the dawn of mankind. And not without reason. Its low density combined with high rigidity, good processability, and its resistance makes it an excellent building material. There is currently a pioneering renaissance of the timber construction, for two distinct reasons: first, wood is increasingly being rediscovered as one of the most important renewable raw materials for sustainable construction. Moreover, a revolution in the construction of timber structures began several years ago with the ever-progressive use of three-dimensional CAD models for digitally controlled robot manufacturing The book documents these developments, in particular the engineering bonding techniques, the introduction of digital production techniques, and the innovative material developments of this material.

Résumé:
From the Renaissance to the present day, each generation of artists, architects, and writers has used the powerful images of ruins to project its own vision of time and human destiny. The metamorphosis of the ruin motif in art explains not only the separations but the continuities between the perception of past and present that characterize the different art movements. Drawing from all media of Western art including garden design, photography, and fine art, Michel Makarius explores the rich and diverse iconography of ruins from da Vinci to Van Gogh, from Botticelli to Roy Lichtenstein. Ruins is a reminder of history at a time when few art motifs still have the power to demand attention for our immense collective past - and at a moment when a reminder is sorely needed.
