Résumé:
This publication analyzes Lebanon’s unique situation—a convergence of economic and architectural reconstruction, social awareness and international development. It also testifies to the designers’ determination to take ownership of their destiny and image by presenting objects and forms that are simultaneously aware of their diverse heritage and are deeply rooted in a complex reality. Prior to the development of this exhibition and publication project, no extensive research has been undertaken on the history of design in Lebanon. This book aims to fill that gap, presenting the state of design based on extensive documentation. It is the first retrospective on design in Lebanon, from the 1920s until today, includes works by over 50 designers, uncovering this major design scene in the Middle-East.

What makes us love our things? Why do we attach certain sentiments to certain items? How is it that sometimes objects can tell stories more eloquently than people? These are questions explored and answered in "The uncommon life of common objects". Author Akiko Busch devotes a chapter to each of 12 common objects, and discusses her and others’ experiences that give everyday things their significance. Through her examination of : a video camera, a cellular phone, a vegetable peeler, a snowboard, a baby carriage, a chair, a refrigerator, a mailbox, a medicine cabinet, a cereal box, a backpack, and a desk, Busch illuminates the social and personal issues that shape our lives and the ownership of our things. Each of the 12 chapters is accompanied by a four-color drawing. Edited by Diana Murphy. Foreword by Susan S. Szenasy. Original illustrations by George Skelcher.

Résumé:
What if there is no housing crisis, but instead a housing market working exactly as intended? What if rent hikes and eviction notices aren’t the work of the invisible hand of the market, but of a parasitic elite systematically funneling wealth away from working-class families? With clarity and precision, Tranjan breaks down pervasive myths about renters, mom-and-pop landlords, and housing affordability. In a society where home ownership is seen as the most important hallmark of a successful life, Tranjan refuses to absolve the landlords and governments that reap massive profits from the status quo. The tenant class must face powerful systems of disinformation and exploitation to secure decent homes and fair rent. Drawing upon a long, inspiring history of collective action in Canada, Tranjan argues that organized tenants have the power to fight back.

Résumé:
Brazil is a country of extreme inequalities, one of the most important of which is the acute concentration of rural land ownership. In recent decades, however, poor landless workers have mounted a major challenge to this state of affairs. A broad grassroots social movement led by the Movement of Landless Rural Workers (MST) has mobilized hundreds of thousands of families to pressure authorities for land reform through mass protest. This book explores the evolution of the landless movement from its birth during the twilight years of Brazil's military dictatorship through the first government of Luiz In cio Lula da Silva. It uses this case to test a number of major theoretical perspectives on social movements and engages in a critical dialogue with both contemporary political opportunity theory and Mancur Olson's classic economic theory of collective action.

Résumé:
Artistic representations of landscape are studies in a half-dozen disciplines (art history, geography, literature, philosophy, politics, sociology), and there is no master narrative or historiographic genealogy to frame interpretations. Geographers are interested in political formations (and geography, as a discipline, is increasingly non-visual). Art historians have written extensively on landscape, but there have not been any recent synthetic attemps or theoretical overviews. At the same time, painters, and other artists often feel they 'possess' the landscape of the region in which they live; that ownership takes place at a non-verbal level, and seems incommensurate with the discourses of art history or geography. Landscape Theory, volume 6 in The Art Seminar series, is the first book to bring together different disciplines and practices, in order to understand how best to conceptualize landscape in art.

Résumé:
In this publication, Sarah Jane Cervenak engages with Black artists and writers who create alternative spaces for Black people to gather free from interruption or regulation. Drawing together Black feminist theory, critical theories of ecology and ecoaesthetics, and Black aesthetics, Cervenak shows how novelists, poets, and visual artists such as Gayl Jones, Toni Morrison, Clementine Hunter, Samiya Bashir, and Leonardo Drew advance an ecological imagination that unsettles Western philosophical ideas of the earth as given to humans. In their aestheticization and conceptualization of gathering, these artists investigate the relationships among art, the environment, home, and forms of Black togetherness. Cervenak argues that by offering a formal and conceptual praxis of gathering, Black artists imagine liberation and alternative ways of being in the world that exist beyond those Enlightenment philosophies that presume Black people and earth as given to enclosure and ownership.

Résumé:
Richards shows that attractive and practical alternatives to a car dependent society are possible. With the growth of car ownership and use reaching crisis proportions in our cities it is imperative to find and implement alternatives if cities are to survive and prosper. He reveals how transport technology is developing, in particular, showing how it can be integrated into the urban environment. The book opens with a look at the "best" of current transportation systems and goes on to explore such advanced technologies as automated highways, covered cities, monorails, new elevated systems, smart cars, guided buses, as well as intelligent highways, and car-free housing. The importance, too, of simple measures such as walking and cycling are covered as being an essential part of any future city as well as that of an "integrated transport" if people are to be encouraged to get out of their cars.

Résumé:
There are no perfect public spaces. Public space is constantly changing, shifting, never quite fixed. It is formed by laws, by regulations, by private ownership, and by city management. Public spaces are influenced both by the people who oversee them and by those who use them. And because of these facts, public spaces are never neutral. In "ublic Spaces, NY," Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample document and analyze Manhattan’s parks, streets, community gardens, privately owned public spaces, recreation areas, waterfronts, and cemeteries. Their book seeks to understand their design, construction and management, and provides detailed drawings of both the spaces themselves and speculative illustrations about how the public uses the spaces. By examining how public spaces facilitate or hinder inclusion, and by detailing the conflicts and negotiations they provoke, this book creates a discourse to reimagine the future of public life in the United States’ densest city.

Résumé:
Architecture and Authorship comprises 17 essays, encompassing a variety of contemporary and historical case studies, which explore issues of authorship, ownership and "copyright" in architecture. The book documents how, from the fifteenth century onwards, individual architects and movements have endeavoured to maintain their status by defending what they see as their own unique territory -- the origins and intentions of their work, and their signature style. Written contributions from international experts in architecture and art history cover a variety of fascinating topics, including domestic space; eighteenth century landscape gardens; the Berlin of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century; and postmodernism and the "Death of the Author;" as well as exploring the work of luminaries from Ernst Neufert and Cedric Price to Rem Koolhaas. Architecture and Authorship is a lavishly illustrated alternative look at the history and culture of architecture, and the thought processes and ideas behind a variety of architectural "practices."
