Résumé:
Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza says, "It is hard not to build what created the enthusiasm and pleasure of being an architect. But this is not wasted time." In the unbuilt works collected in this publication, thought, conception, and the timeless heritage of architecture, as well as ideas that through their power and poetic manifestation become models, are examined. The texts that comprise the first volume, written by people intimately familiar with Siza and his work, add memories, analyses, and lived experiences. A selection of texts from the architect himself frame not only the unbuilt projects he has selected but also his vision and approach as an architect, designer, and even sculptor.

This issue is dedicated to their practice and presents thirteen built works and five projects on paper. The buildings result from the encounter between the given programme, sensitivity to the site, and methods of construction, while the architecture overall is based on storytelling, making, and how things are made. Manthey Kula uses words, drawings, and materials to construct a new and potent reality. Targeting the public realm of fiction through intuition and imagination, the projects featured here include a ferry port and hydro power station, plus memorials, a rest area, and houses.

Urbanism is inherently conflict-driven, as Eve Blau points out in an interview in this issue of ‘MONU’. According to her, because cities are places of power, representation, and contestation, processes of urbanisation involve a certain amount of violence and destruction, which is both positive and negative. Various authors and perspectives go on to explore this notion in depth. Topics range from the Syrian refugee crisis, where people reshape their places and identities while navigating the complex structures of belonging, to sprawl and emptiness as a chief tool of protection in Australian capital cities and how the youth of Kyiv are returning to life as usual the Ukrainian capital.

Résumé:
This book explores the photographic works of Paul Nash (1889–1946), one of the most significant British artists of the 20th century. Best known for his evocative paintings of war-ravaged landscapes and his quasi-Surrealist visions of the English countryside, Nash was also a consummate photographer, who believed that the camera could reveal aspects of the world that the painter could not. Beginning in 1930, he regularly experimented with photography, working with a No. 1A pocket Kodak series 2 camera. Including a highly informative contextual essay by Simon Grant, this publication explores the experimental nature of Nash’s output and the intensity and power of his photographic vision.

As the global economy has changed over the past decades, it has left an architectural legacy of abandoned factories, warehouses and docks in its wake. But these spaces need not remain empty; the history of post-industrial society is still being written. All over the world, abandoned industrial infrastructure is being creatively repurposed. RE–USA provides a toolkit for adaptive reuse grounded in practical examples. Cities and cases are selected to illustrate the power of innovative processes and projects based on private-public partnerships, bottom-up initiatives, community involvement and smart design despite difficult conditions, from declining demography to weak real estate values and scarce investment.

Résumé:
Belgian artist and draughtswoman Hannelore Van Dijck produces minute and highly textured charcoal drawings that often cover entire surfaces, whether they be walls, floors, sheets of paper, or textiles. Although her drawings might seem abstract at first, they are essentially hyperrealistic. Often the differences she introduces are subtle and nuanced, and therein lies their power. They can be described as graphic interventions – small dashes, circular or geometric motifs, lines resembling wood grain, smudges – that appear natural in a way, and as such, become part of the architecture or environment. This artists’ book coincides with an exhibition of Van Dijck’s work at Be-Part in Belgium.

The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and city of Pripyat are officially uninhabitable. Yet for 30 years now, people have returned to live in the zone’s abandoned villages, clinging to the only home they know. Photographer Esther Hessing travelled to Slavutych, built for the evacuated personnel of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant after the 1986 disaster, to document the lives of the zone’s aging residents along with those in Slavutych, many of whom work at the failed nuclear plant to build its New Safe Confinement structure, slated for completion at the end of 2016. Their stories are told in this crowdfunded book, through Hessing’s captivating images and texts by Sophieke Thurmer.
