Folding is a relatively new trend in architecture. It is a very playful way of designing which offers free reign to spontaneity and surprise in the design process. The book "Folding Architecture – spatial, structural and organizational diagrams" offers insights into the possibilities of folding as well as results of the research conducted by the architectural faculty of the TU in Delft. The technique of folding in contemporary architecture is vividly illustrated with a survey of much-discussed concepts, projects and buildings in which this technique was applied. Now back in print.

Résumé:
With over 1,200 illustrations, plans and detail drawings, "Constructing architecture" is a veritable encyclopedia for anyone interested in the essential technical information needed for building and construction, regardless of design style. This systematically organized book is divided into sections on materials, building components, building types, case studies and a catalog of components, all drawn to a common scale, providing everything the professional or the student might need to transform their designs into built projects. Underlying this practical book is a respect for the primacy of design, the belief that building is not simply a fact of engineering or technology, but the translation and culmination of a creative act that can only be successfully completed if the technical principles of construction are well understood.

Résumé:
It is not without irony that in an age characterised by the dissolution of certainty – a consequence of digital dematerialisation and the catastrophic destabilisation of our social institutions and natural world – architecture, for so long the repository for our myths and the vessel for our intangible narratives and rituals, has been stripped bare. Increasingly preoccupied with the physical, material and measurable, architecture has forfeited its original purpose as a mediating link between the tacit and the tangible. Drawing on the current resurgence and our enduring cultural fascination with the ethereal and uncanny, this AD frames the spectral as a deconstructive gesture that undermines the fixedness and certainties of binary logics, a means to develop new practices and positions from which to address our contemporary uncertainties. Gathering a body of work that explores and speculates on architecture’s long romance with the incorporeal, the issue is intended as a catalyst through which latency, contingency and indeterminacy, inherent characteristics of the architectural condition, can once more be valued, cultivated and nurtured.

Résumé:
Recent years have seen significant changes in architectural practice, where digital technology is widespread and commonplace – a condition referred to as “post-digital”. Technological and ecological disruptions are forcing architects to adapt and re-strategize. This issue features research and education institutions where such explorations are being actively pursued: Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles, Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. It introduces pioneering projects that push the boundaries in their respective fields, redefining architecture within the post-digital context.

Résumé:
For Simon-Claude Constant-Dufeux (1801–1871), a radical French architect and chair of perspective at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the study and composition of ornament were essential pursuits. Architectural emblems and ornaments were symbols that conveyed concise and immediate meaning; they were also a crucial element in realizing the Romantic ideal of the synthesis of the arts. Through the lens of Constant-Dufeux’s work, ''Ornament and Symbol in French Romantic Architecture'' explores the sudden proliferation of ornamental motifs in France, challenging the understanding that the twentieth-century modernist avant-garde developed in direct opposition to ornament. Ralph Ghoche examines architectural ornament from the July Monarchy to the Second Empire, revealing its connections to Romantic theories of symbolism and ideas about the power of form to elicit emotional responses. Ghoche repositions Constant-Dufeux as a pivotal figure in developing new forms of symbolic signification in architecture, establishing him as one of Romanticism’s key theoreticians.

Résumé:
Written by an architect who has been designing and building affordable housing for thirty years, this well-illustrated book is both a call to create well-designed places for the homeless and a review of innovative and successful building designs that now serve diverse communities across the United States. Sam Davis argues for safe and functional architectural designs and programs that symbolically reintegrate the homeless into society in buildings that offer beauty, security, and hope to those most in need. Davis presents a new perspective, considering the personal concerns of the homeless, the social costs of homelessness, and organizational and design issues. He examines problems of community fit and site planning, building design and orga-nization, and interior layout and suggests how to weigh costs and optimize expenditures. He asks and answers a range of challenging questions: What is possible and desirable when designing a new facility for the homeless? Should it be elegant or unassuming? What types of spaces should be included? How should it look and what should it feel like? Should it be more like a house or more like a dormitory? What is the proper balance between function, quality of construction, and architectural delight? Designing for the Homeless recounts how various communities have addressed the problem of housing the homeless, beginning with one of the most ambitious plans, the St. Vincent de Paul Village in San Diego, which opened in 1987. Davis vividly recounts the plight of those who become homeless.
