The collection includes five essays never before published, including one which looks afresh at the architectural apparatus of sixteenth-century state entries and another that explores the use of caryatids and other formalized human figures in English architecture from Tudor times onwards. The author also offers reprinted essays, revised where necessary, on such topics as the idea of a "Court Style" in medieval English architecture, the south front of Wilton House, and the infiltration of the Georgian Office of Works by an architectural pressure group led by Lord Burlington. Several essays reflect the author's long-standing interest in the problem of the persistence of Gothic architecture in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and its revival in the eighteenth, and another treats his equally long-standing interest in the history of the architectural profession. The author concludes with his recollections of what can now be seen as a golden age of English architectural research in the years following the Second World War.

Val d’Europe, la ville nouvelle qui s’édifie à proximité des parcs d’attraction de Disney à Marne la Vallée, vient d’inaugurer une nouvelle place unique en son genre en France, la place de Toscane. Celle-ci est inspirée de la célèbre place médiévale de la ville de Lucca, la piazza anfiteatro, qui épouse la forme de l’ancien amphithéâtre dont elle occupe le site. Elle a été dessinée par un grand architecte de Parme, Pier Carlo Bontempi. De forme ovale, elle accueille des commerces mais aussi des appartements qui donnent sur sa superbe fontaine en pierre et sur de calmes patios intérieurs. Elle constitue un nouveau pôle d’animation de la ville nouvelle vers lequel convergent une galerie commerciale et des rues. A proximité immédiate de la nouvelle place de la Mairie avec laquelle elle s’articule, elle forme un ensemble qui témoigne de la renaissance de l’urbanisme en France. L’architecte Pier Carlo Bontempi, architecte et designer diplômé de l’Université de Florence, a installé son agence dans une superbe maison de campagne à proximité de Parme. De nombreuses publications ont été consacrées à ses créations et il a été lauréat de nombreux concours. En 2000, il a reçu le prestigieux prix américain John Burgee. Il a remporté le concours pour la réalisation de la place de Toscane en 2002.

The diamond vaults of Central Europe are among the most original yet little-known creations of medieval architecture : ceilings so complex that, as their name suggests, they recall the facets of a cut gemstone. First appearing in 1471 at the palace of Albrechtsburg in Meissen, Germany, they were employed for almost a century in locations as far apart as Gdansk on the Baltic to Bechyne in southern Bohemia (today’s Czech Republic). From a historical point of view, diamond vaults show the continuing vitality of Gothic architecture in Central Europe, at a time when the rediscovery of the classical past in Renaissance Italy was changing the course of building. Architecturally, they offer some of the most impressive examples of geometrical experimentation and versatility in both secular and sacred spaces. But perhaps their greatest appeal is visual. The stark, concave–convex shapes of diamond vaults, with their lyrical play of the effects of light and shade, strike us today as incredibly modern. "Diamond vaults" explores this singular phenomenon. A text by Zoë Opacic explores the vault’s origins, topography, structure and design, as well as function and context, focusing primarily on the Czech Republic, which boasts some of the best examples, and contrasting them with those in Germany and Gdansk. One of the chief aims is to demonstrate the undoubted aesthetic appeal of this form, which has continued to inspire generations of architects.

During his tenure as Chief Royal Architect (1539-1588) in the "Golden Age" of the Ottoman Empire, Sinan designed hundreds of structures that helped create the renowned urban image of Istanbul, particularly mosques with seemingly weightless, light-filled centralized domes that have been compared with developments in Renaissance Italy. His distinctive architectural idiom left its imprint over a vast empire extending from the Danube to the Tigris, and he became the most celebrated of all Ottoman architects. In this lavishly illustrated, major new assessment of Sinan's oeuvre, Gülru Necipoglu challenges standard views of Sinan as a "Turkish Michelangelo" driven solely by an insatiable urge for artistic experimentation. Her innovative analysis shows that Sinan's rich variety of mosque designs sprang from a process of negotiation between the architect and his elite patrons, both men and women. Defined though they were by social and territorial hierarchies and associated notions of identity, memory, and decorum, Sinan's mosques simultaneously shaped these conceptions. "The Age of Sinan" draws on a wealth of primary sources to reveal the chief architect's monuments as bearers of previously unrecognized dimensions of meaning.
