This book is a stunning journey through Sápmi and includes in-depth interviews with Sámi artists, activists, and scholars boldly standing up for the rights of their people. In this illustrated work, Gabriel Kuhn, author of over a dozen books and interpreter of global social justice movements, aims to raise awareness of the ongoing fight of the Sámi for justice and self-determination. The first accessible English-language introduction to the history of the Sámi people and the first account that focuses on their political resistance, this provocative work gives irrefutable evidence of the important role the Sámi play in the resistance of indigenous people against an economic and political system whose power to destroy all life on earth has reached a scale unprecedented in the history of humanity.

Résumé:
Using the theme of Currency to invite reflection on the contemporary power of the photograph to relay and relate meaning across distance, the Triennial of Photography Hamburg explores the value of photography in the 21st century. The extension of this economic term to art and visual culture allows for a sustained engagement with photography and its relationship to value-making, canon-making, access, circulation, and knowledge production. At a time when the production, distribution, and consumption of photographic images has become ubiquitous and we have learned to structure our contemporary world through a lens, the digital image has become the currency of exchange on social platforms. Fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, this book gathers international perspectives that reflect on how photography shapes today’s narratives, as well as our perception and experience of the world.

Résumé:
Anselm Kiefer's Die Argonauten series was inspired by a casual dinner with friends. At the end of a meal, the artist noted the table's resemblance to a battlefield, and this quickly led him to delve into the Greek myth of Jason and the Argonauts. Despite the unlikely informality of the original prompt, Kiefer's choice to reinterpret the hero Jason's quest for the golden fleece continues central motifs in his work of violence, chauvinism and systems of power--derived, as ever, from the artist's assiduous study of poetry, mythology and cultural history. The project evolved into an installation composed of various totemic objects and weathered remnants, left over, so it appears, from Jason's quest. Die Argonauten reproduces this ambitious series for the first time, along with a text by the artist.

This book is a collection of essays by Susan Sontag which was published in 1966. It includes some of Sontag's best-known works, including "On Style", "Notes on 'Camp'", and the titular essay "Against Interpretation". In the last, Sontag argued that in the new critical approach to aesthetics the spiritual importance of art is being replaced by the emphasis on the intellect. Rather than recognizing great creative works as possible sources of energy, she argued, contemporary critics were all too often taking art's transcendental power for granted, and focusing instead on their own intellectually constructed abstractions like "form" and "content. " In effect, she wrote, interpretation had become "the intellect's revenge upon art. " The essay famously finished with the words, "in place of a hermeneutics we need an erotics of art".

Harvard University Graduate School of Design has always recognized the indispensable importance and values of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, and urban design, yet has transcended their individual aspirations through intellectual cross-fertilization and collaboration. The material presented in this publication forms a small part of the incredible range and diversity of proposals and visions that the GSD students and faculty have produced during the past academic year. This work is indicative of the School s commitment, as a global leader in the field, to exploring and articulating transformative ideas through the power of design. It is as important for us to share and communicate the outcome of our research and design investigations as it is to show the fertile circumstances and conditions for the making of these projects.

Is the idea of environment in architecture only ever reducible to 'environmental architecture'? For Ricardo de Ostos and Nanette Jackowski, tutors of Intermediate Unit 3 at the Architectural Association, the answer is a resolute no. Instead they offer an alternative reading of 'environment', in which the brutal and lyrical are juxtaposed through visually compelling narratives of architecture. Illustrating their apporach, this book presents ten years of student projects, all prompted by the unit's visits to extreme geographical contexts - from the rainforests of Brazil to the quarries of northern India. With additional photographic documentation and conversations with Lebbeus Woods, Geoff Manaugh and Peter Cook, Scavengers & Other Creatures in Promised Lands explores the gripping power of myth and fiction as radial narratives for imagining the near future of cities and forests.

Résumé:
The fifteen years in Germany between the end of World War I and the National Socialists’ rise to power in 1933 stand out as one of the twentieth century’s most tumultuous periods. These years of political and economic upheaval famously spawned significant and lasting changes in the arts. However, one noteworthy product of Weimar Germany’s booming cultural life has escaped significant critical attention : the photo essay. The Photography of Crisis examines narrative photography and creates a snapshot of where Germany was after World War I and what it would become with the rise of National Socialism. By reading Weimar photo essays within their historical and literary context, Daniel Magilow shows how German photographers intervened in modernity’s key political and philosophical debates regarding the changing notions of nature, culture, personal identity, and national identity.

The catastrophic events of March 11, 2011—the earthquake, tsunami and ensuing nuclear meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant—have been called "the triple disaster" in Japan. Among the first artists to respond to these experiences were photographers. Some attempted to document the devastation, while others ruminated on the meaning and use of photography in the wake of tragedy. As the immediate effects of the earthquake and tsunami gave way to nuclear disaster, artists began to respond to the challenges of depicting an invisible threat that calls up the collective memory of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Artists include Takashi Arai, Nobuyoshi Araki, Ishu Han, Naoya Hatakeyama, Takashi Homma, Kikuji Kawada, Rinko Kawauchi, Keizo Kitajima, Kozo Miyoshi, Masato Seto, Lieko Shiga, Shimpei Takada, Masaru Tatsuki, Daisuke Yokota and Tomoko Yoneda.

Résumé:
The Polish Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale will have the pleasure of presenting a panoramic film projection of the opera Halka by Stanislaw Moniuszko, as it was staged in February for the inhabitants of Cazale, a village situated in the mountains of Haiti. The winners of this year's contest for the official Polish representation in Venice, artists C.T. Jasper and Joanna Malinowska and curator Magdalena Moskalewicz, decided to stage the opera in Haiti inspired by the mad plan of Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo, who wanted to build an opera house in the Amazon. Fascinated by Fitzcarraldo's faith in the universal power of opera, but not uncritical of the colonizing aspect of his actions, they decided to reveal and undercut its romanticism by confronting a set of very specific geographic, historical, and sociopolitical realities.
