Résumé:
At first glance, the relationships among tourists, tourism maps, and the spaces of tourism seem straightforward enough: tourists use maps to find their way to and through the sites of history, culture, nature, or recreation represented there. Less apparent is how tourism maps and those using them construct such spaces and identities. As the essays in "Mapping Tourism" clearly demonstrate, the extraordinary interactions of work with leisure and the everyday with the exotic make tourism maps ideal sites for exploring the contested construction of place and identity. Construction sites in the "New Berlin," Alabama's civil rights trail, Québec City, a California ghost town, and Bangkok's sex trade are among the spaces the essays examine. Taken together, these essays allow us to see tourist space as it truly is: contested, ever changing, and replete with issues of power.

Résumé:
Please Listen I Have Something To Tell You About Is What is marks the first large-scale monograph by American artist Chris Johanson that began his career in the 1990s as part of the community of artists who based themselves in the bohemian community of San Franciscos Mission District (including Barry McGee and Margaret Kilgallen). Johansons first pieces were rough-hewn, painted on old wood he found in the street. However, over time his works have grown to include a diverse variety of media executed in large-scale installations. Johansons work comments on the age of consumerism as well as modern psychological phenomena such as self-help and psychotherapy. He creates a world where nudist dancers and emotionally centred people exist next to power junkies and corporate automatons, cunningly reflecting the duality of the human condition.

Résumé:
From trips to the market to lighting entire cities, power is pivotal to the simplest of everyday necessities. Wars are fought over it, the planet is polluted by it, but now its price has become too high. Are we capable of shifting to cleaner, safer, more reliable sources of energy? Fueling the Future gathers the best and brightest minds in the field — thinkers like Jeremy Rifkin, L. Hunter Lovins, and Allison MacFarlane — and uses their collective wisdom to tackle this pressing question from several angles. The experts predict what a world without oil, which is estimated to run out in 50 years, would be like. What new energy alternatives are available? The use of hydrogen and fuel cells is examined, with surprising conclusions. Fresh, efficient prose makes the experts' controversial answers readable and engaging, as well as thought provoking.

Résumé:
Industrialization and population growth have brought about a global water crisis. Nature can no longer compensate the exploitation of our freshwater and our oceans. One billion people have no reliable access to clean drinking water; two billion live in precarious hygienic conditions. Famine, poverty, epidemics, and infant mortality are closely linked with the water crisis. Social, ecological, political, and economic conflicts obstruct efforts to resolve the global water crisis. Water is an instrument of power. The key question reads: Is water a commodity or is free access to water an inalienable human right? By approaching water from a phenomenological perspective, Who owns the Water? seeks to persuade the reader that an element that is constantly flowing and changing defies all claims to own it, be they political or economic, and is instead the responsibility of the entire international community.

''Enfleshed: Ecologies of entities and beings'' brings together practitioners, thinkers, and artists from across Eurasia to collectively explore multispecies ecologies. The volume reflects anthrodecentric and embodied approaches to collaboration and knowledge production––processes that are always interwoven with a multitude of entities and actors. In this book, the contributions flow like a river across the Eurasian continent, branching out into all directions. The contributors engage in an exploration of experimental epistemic alliances, which operate as a way to learn and make new dialogic relations. The conflicts generated by ecological disaster, war, the global economy, identity politics, and the power structures of knowledge production and science here intertwine with shamanisms, rituals, magic, speculation, politics, and poetics. How do we imagine an active and implicated role of the human as one being among other beings? What might this entail, and what might this generate?

What if there is no housing crisis, but instead a housing market working exactly as intended? What if rent hikes and eviction notices aren’t the work of the invisible hand of the market, but of a parasitic elite systematically funneling wealth away from working-class families? With clarity and precision, Tranjan breaks down pervasive myths about renters, mom-and-pop landlords, and housing affordability. In a society where home ownership is seen as the most important hallmark of a successful life, Tranjan refuses to absolve the landlords and governments that reap massive profits from the status quo. The tenant class must face powerful systems of disinformation and exploitation to secure decent homes and fair rent. Drawing upon a long, inspiring history of collective action in Canada, Tranjan argues that organized tenants have the power to fight back.

In 1951, her photograph "American Girl in Italy"- depicting a young woman on a street flanked by whistling men- made Ruth Orkin (1921–85) a household name. Now, a new facet of her work emerges through sensational never-before-seen negatives and slides. "Women" illustrates Orkin’s devoted, humorous, witty and sensitive documentation of women’s life in the 1940s and 1950s. She records the illustrious goings-on in beauty salons and at cocktail parties, at dog shows and on Hollywood sets. We meet Lauren Bacall, Jane Russell, Joan Taylor and Doris Day, but also waitresses, stewardesses, female soldiers and best friends. Whether gazing directly into the camera, looking away from it or even laughing at something outside of the frame, Orkin’s snapshots of women reflect their increased career mobility, consumer power and social influence in the postwar era.

Résumé:
In focusing on creating preferable conditions, the discipline of design is optimistic by default. And yet, vernacular manifestations of skepticism, dissatisfaction and even resentment toward design abound. Instead of systematically discarding them, can these "sad passions" shed a valuable light on the blind spots of the field? Can disillusion be something more than disillusionment? Can it become an emotional method to unveil design’s dysfunctions and contradictions? Author Silvio Lorusso looks into historical and present manifestations of design disillusion to shorten the gap between expectations and reality when it comes to the everyday practice of designers. Using humorous and irreverent visuals, often containing jokes about design, Lorusso constructs thoughtful dichotomies on such topics as synthesis and autonomy, power and impotence, and aspirations and compromise. The result is an amusing yet academic consideration of the design profession and its future.

Résumé:
This book develops a fresh and challenging perspective on the city. Drawing on a wide and diverse range of material and texts, it argues that too much contemporary urban theory is based on nostalgia for a humane, face-to-face and bounded city. Amin and Thrift maintain that the traditional divide between the city and the rest of the world has been perforated through urban encroachment, the thickening of the links between the two, and urbanization as a way of life. They outline an innovative sociology of the city that scatters urban life along a series of sites and circulations, reinstating previously suppressed areas of contemporary urban life: from the presence of non-human activity to the centrality of distant connections. The implications of this viewpoint are traced through a series of chapters on power, economy and democracy.

Résumé:
In "AGITATE! AGITATE! AGITATE!" Cj Reay of Black Lodge Press reflects upon their relationship to DIY print culture, zines, and the politics of art production. Reay lays out a history of DIY print and the people's press: from chapbooks produced during the French revolution to the zines made in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, while outlining their own personal engagement with reading, music, and art that agitates, angers, and incites action. For Cj Reay, growing up in rural Northern England, the inherently anti-capitalist nature of DIY culture provided a connection to radical working class movements and the politics of anarchy: "living breathing movements of resistance and joy and complexity and disappointment and boundless optimism.'" Co-published with Black Lodge Press, "AGITATE! AGITATE! AGITATE!" is a zine about the beauty and radical power of creating art without permission.
