Résumé:
In his study of Giedion’s life and work Reto Geiser foregrounds the formative character of Giedion’s extended stays in the United States and their role as an inspiring laboratory to propel his scholarship. By challenging the presentation of a continuous line of developments, and revealing the ruptures and contradictions within Giedion’s work, Geiser questions a heroic account of modern architecture, turning instead to the less ideological and frequently overlooked facets of Giedion’s oeuvre. The book argues that, although Giedion’s position in between two cultural spheres created discontinuities in his work, it also facilitated a mutual exchange between the architectural impresario and his North American peers and thereby helped to shape the development and reception of the modern project on either side of the Atlantic.

Résumé:
Malcolm Quantrill made his first visit to Finland half a century ago as a young student from the University of Liverpool, England. Since 1983 Quantrill has published six books on Finnish modern architecture and, in recognition of his contributions to architectural history and theory, he has been the Distinguished Professor of Architecture at Texas A+M University in the USA since 1986. Quantrill and Mäkinen have collaborated since 1987, one result being Quantrill's book in honour of Academician Reima Pietilä, One Man's Odyssey in Search of Finnish Architecture (1988). Matti K. Mäkinen is a prominent Finnish architect who served as Director General of the National Board of Public Building from 1985 until 1994. He has published several books and articles on architecture and urban design. Professor Mäkinen is a former President of The Finnish Association of Architects SAFA and an honorary member of the professional institutes of architects in the USA (FAIA) and in Hungary (MÈSZ). Here the authors engage in dialogues as they explore the present state of architecture and its culture. Under such headings as The Balthusian Dilemma, Stealing a Gem, Heroes and Statues, The Elephant and the Butterfly, they address their theme of The Unmade Bed of Architecture.

Résumé:
This collection of a number of key essays by the New York-based architect and writer Mark Rakatansky proposes an innovative framework for architecture to enact the complex tectonic dramas of social and culture space. Following its title, the book is arrayed in three sections: Tectonic, Acts of, Desire and Doubt. In each, Rakatansky covers a series of subjects in a writerly voice that varies from the third-person narrative of the scholarly essays to the transcript of an email exchange with fellow academic Sarah Whiting discussing recent books by architect Greg Lynn. Transformational performances of architectural identity are explored in discussions of fabrication, social parametrics, building envelopes, spatial narratives, animation, migrancy, and in illuminating readings into the works of Louis Kahn, Robin Evans, John Coltrane, Giulio Romano and Andrea Palladio.
