The Stedelijk Museum opened its doors in 1895, the same year as the first Venice Biennale. It was a "quiet, civilized museum for the Amsterdam bourgeoisie in a time when there was nothing as troublesome as modern art." Initially, the museum exhibited the legacy of the eccentric Sophia Augusta de Bruyn, Douairière Lopez Suasso: a heterogeneous collection of antiques, coins, jewels, timepieces, silver knickknacks, and other curiosa. Period rooms, from canal houses that had been demolished when Raadhuisstraat was driven through, helped create a presentable whole. The museum's renowned furniture collection was not begun until 1934, but since then it has grown to include more than 1000 objects from circa 1850 to the present, with an accent on the twentieth century. Chairs, settees, tables, folding screens, cabinets, and even complete interiors are included.~This publication provides a comprehensive overview of the Stedelijk Museum’s furniture collecting activities from 1934 to 2000. It charts the museum's rich collection, which includes work by H.P. Berlage, K.P.C de Bazel, Piet Kramer, Gerrit T. This book casts new light on the notorious Bloomsbury Group and how the issues of their day influenced their interpretation and decoration of the home. Christopher Reed analyzes the rooms designed by Bloomsbury artists as spaces in which to be modern. The book traces the development of Bloomsbury’s domestic aesthetic from the group’s influential promulgation of Post-Impressionism in Britain around 1910 through the 1930's. In detailed studies of rooms created for Virginia Woolf and John Maynard Keynes, among others, by Woolf’s sister Vanessa Bell and her artist colleagues Duncan Grant and Roger Fry, Reed challenges the accepted notion that these artists drifted away from modernism. He presents their work as an alternative form of modernism, later suppressed by sexist and homophobic attitudes that disparaged the decorative arts and domesticity in general, as well as Bloomsbury in particular. The aesthetic and ideological implications of the Bloomsbury interiors were international in scope, Reed argues, and constitute important episodes in this history of modernity.

Stickers have become an essential element of contemporary street art used by the most underground of artists. With stickers, anyone can plant their flag, gain notoriety, recognition and attain instant coverage while the action itself is inconspicuous. This book documents the best submissions from the first international sticker awards which have been established to record this constantly evolving movement. Low-tech and prepared in advance, stickers are made from a multitude of materials and techniques from hand, photocopies, posters and wheat pastes to walls. From drainpipes and crosswalk boxes to street signs and walls, stickers can be found almost anywhere at eye level on public surfaces blending into and becoming part of the streets. Motifs vary from scribbles and characters to intricate figurative images, often personal logos or tags functioning as trademarks.
