Résumé:
After achieving international acclaim as a painter and designer, El Lissitzky set out in 1924 to convince the world—and himself—that he was also an architect. He did this with a project for a "horizontal skyscraper," which he gave an obscure and untranslatable name: Wolkenbügel. Eight of these buildings, perched atop slender pillars, were intended to stand at major intersections along Moscow's Boulevard Ring, integrating the flow of tramlines, subways, and elevators. In "Wolkenbügel", Richard Anderson explores Lissitzky's translation of visual and textual media into spatial ideas and offers an in-depth study of the surviving drawings and archival artifacts related to Lissitzky's most complex architectural proposal. This book offers a new and definitive account of how Lissitzky expanded the conceptual and representational tools available to the modern architect by drawing on many sources—including photography, typography, exhibition design, and even the elementary forms of the alphabet—to create the Wolkenbügel. Anderson shows how the production and reception of a paper project served to link key ideas and relationships that animated the worlds of art and architecture, offering a new view on received histories of the interwar avant-gardes. By attending to Lissitzky's singular architectural project, Anderson reveals the dynamics of internationality in the constitution of modern architectural culture in Europe.

Résumé:
The Limestone Barrens Project is an international multidisciplinary investigation of the limestone cliffs and alvars in three areas: Ontario's Bruce Peninsula, Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula and the Burren in County Clare Ireland. Artists working in lens-based media (photography, video, video projection and video installation), writers, a composer and researchers walked and documented the sites so as to explore links between science, visual art, creative writing, sound and music. The project's publication is a stunning tribute to the fragile nature of these sites and their importance to our environment. Three essays, artist statements, poetry and sound recordings are accompanied by magnificent illustrations by some of the world's most distinguished landscape photographers, notably Marlene Creates, Har-Prakash Khalsa and Greg Staats. Accompanied by an audio CD. Produced in collaboration with Sir Wilfred Grenville College of Art Gallery, Newfoundland and Model Arts and Niland Gallery, Ireland.

Résumé:
In the late 1960s, Polaroid Corporation founder Edwin Land initiated a project to invite more than 800 artists around the world to shoot on Polaroid film, supplying them with the company's latest products. Over the ensuing decades, more than 4,500 works, by photographers ranging from Ansel Adams to Andy Warhol, were presented to the company and found their way into Polaroid's International Collection at their European headquarters near Frankfurt am Main. In 2008 Polaroid went bankrupt. The company was bought by the Impossible Project (who promptly invented a new kind of instant film at the Polaroid factory in Enschede) and its legendary collection was acquired by the Westlicht Schauplatz museum in Vienna. From Polaroid to Impossible celebrates both this acquisition and the launch of a new Polaroid collection spearheaded by Westlicht and the Impossible Project. It offers the first overview of the European Polaroid Collection, and includes selected Polaroid masterpieces by figures such as Ansel Adams, Barbara Crane, Giselle Freund, Gottfried Helnwein, Sally Mann, Robert Mapplethorpe, Helmut Newton, Stephen Shore, Aaron Siskind, Andy Warhol, William Wegman and Minor White; artists like Miyako Ishiuchi, Andreas Mahl and Catherine Wagner, who made specialties of the medium; plus newly commissioned Impossible instant photography by contemporary artists such as Nobuyoshi Araki, David Leventhal, Mary Ellen Mark and Stefanie Schneider. Numerous images are reproduced in full color at 1:1 scale, making this volume a luscious and giftworthy celebration of the charm of the Polaroid photograph.

Résumé:
The Berlin-based photo artist Arina Dähnick follows in the footsteps of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in her study of city life and urbanity, the contrasts of inside and outside, of blurriness and focus, reflections and mirror images, and plays with the viewer’s perception. She discovered van der Rohe's architecture in the fall of 2012, when, after a thunderstorm, she perceived the Neue Nationalgalerie in a both fascinating and paradoxical spatial experience of boundless vastness—and a simultaneous feeling of being held. From then on she photographed the building under various conditions until its closure in 2015, following in Mies van der Rohe’s footsteps from Berlin to Brno, from Chicago to New York. She captured his most famous buildings in photo series that conveys her creative inspiration as well as the fascinating spatial experience of the architecture itself.
