Résumé:
Eyes on the Street is a revelation of the phenomenal woman who raised three children, wrote seven groundbreaking books, saved neighborhoods, stopped expressways, was arrested twice, and engaged at home and on the streets in thousands of debates--all of which she won. Here is the child who challenged her third-grade teacher; the high school poet; the journalist who honed her writing skills at Iron Age, Architectural Forum, Fortune, and other outlets, while amassing the knowledge she would draw upon to write her most famous book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities. Here, too, is the activist who helped lead an ultimately successful protest against Robert Moses's proposed expressway through her beloved Greenwich Village; and who, in order to keep her sons out of the Vietnam War, moved to Canada, where she became as well known and admired as she was in the United States.

Woodbine, a physical space in Ridgewood, Queens from which this publication was born, was founded, in part, as a means to create that presence... ''The reservoir'' features new and previously unavailable texts by Silvia Federici, Fred Moten, Franco “Bifo” Berardi, Ben Morea, and P.M., as well as fiction, poetry, interviews, photography, essays, illustrations, and archival material from more than 20 contributors, with design by Kevin McCaughey.

Résumé:
Russian-German architect Sergei Tchoban (born 1962) is well-known for his virtuoso skills as a draftsman; for over 30 years he has also been a passionate collector of architectural drawings. This publication unites Tchoban's own drawings--which range from perspectival-illusionist representations of his hometown of St. Petersburg to travel impressions, fantasies and visionary architectural studies--with highlights from his collection of works by European architects and painters dating from the seventeenth century, including Ferdinando Galli Bibiena (1656-1743), Filippo Juvara (1678-1736) and Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825). Focusing on motifs of ancient, classicist and Baroque architecture, these works establish a fruitful dialogue with Tchoban's correspondingly broad production. Through these extraordinary examples of paper architecture--a fascinating but somewhat neglected critical genre--this book underscores the endless possibilities for expression in the medium and promises to delight any reader interested in architecture or the graphic arts.

Résumé:
Provocative and enlightening, Richard Sennett's "The Craftsman" is an exploration of craftsmanship - the desire to do a job well for its own sake - as a template for living. Most of us have to work. But is work just a means to an end? In trying to make a living, have we lost touch with the idea of making things well? Pure competition, Sennett shows, will never produce good work. Instead, the values of the craftsman, whether in a Stradivari violin workshop or a modern laboratory, can enrich our lives and change the way we anchor ourselves in the world around us. The past lives of crafts and craftsmen show us ways of working - using tools, acquiring skills, thinking about materials - which provide rewarding alternative ways for people to utilise their talents. We need to recognize this if motivations are to be understood and lives made as fulfilling as possible.

Résumé:
Do you know how to design for a circular economy? A truly sustainable, circular economy is both a robust and viable option for architecture. Through 24 inspirational case studies, interviews and essays, this book is an accessible and practical guide to how architects can move from a linear economy towards a circular economy. This atlas to sustainable, closed-loop systems takes the reader on a journey through four distinct steps (Recycle, Reuse, Reduce, Circular Economy) that show how they can dramatically reduce the negative impact humans have on the planet. It gives architects the skills and knowledge to navigate through the emerging fields of resource management towards a true Circular Economy. Each step is supplemented with an in-depth interview with an expert who is successfully tacking one or more of the challenges facing all designers today. If we change our behaviour, we enable humanity to work with nature rather than against it.

Résumé:
"Do It Yourself" investigates the history behind the current do-it-yourself craze in home repair and remodeling. The origins of home improvement can be traced to the early part of the century, when government loan programmes placed home ownership within the reach of growing numbers of families, mass-circulation magazines began providing their readers with information about home renovation, and increasing numbers of Americans turned to the manual arts and handicrafts as leisure-time pursuits. World War II provided many Americans with the skills and confidence to undertake home-improvement projects on their own, and after the war, changes in the manufacturing and retailing of tools and equipment created new possibilities for transforming one's home. The text of "Do It Yourself", which investigates topics ranging from women's roles in home repair to historic preservation, is a lively mix of illustrations--including period photographs, magazine spreads, and advertisements--and clearly written analysis of the trends

Omnipresent, essential to life, the little-known living organisms that are trees have begun to generate a growing interest on behalf of the public, as evidenced by the international success of several recent books and movies devoted to the subject. Underestimated by biologists for a long time—like the entirety of the plant kingdom—in recent years they have been the subject of scientific discoveries that have allowed us to see these organisms in a new light. Interestingly, some of these are amongst the oldest and largest members of this community of living things. Boasting sensory and motor skills, capable of communication, existing in symbiosis with other species and the climate, trees are equipped with unexpected faculties whose discovery confirms what traditional knowledge has long since incorporated. The veil has been lifted on a fascinating world—the world of ‘plant intelligence’—which could be the answer to many of today’s technological and environmental problems.

Résumé:
One of the most influential photographers of his generation, Ansel Adams (1902–1984) is famous for his dramatic photographs of the American West. Although many of Adams’s images are now iconic, his early work has remained largely unknown. In this first monograph dedicated to the beginnings of Adams’s career, Rebecca A. Senf argues that these early photographs are crucial to understanding Adams’s artistic development and offer new insights into many aspects of the artist’s mature oeuvre. Drawing on copious archival research, Senf traces the first three decades of Adams’s photographic practice—beginning with an amateur album made during his childhood and culminating with his Guggenheim-supported National Parks photography of the 1940s. Highlighting the artist’s persistence in forging a career path and his remarkable ability to learn from experience as he sharpened his image-making skills, this beautifully illustrated volume also looks at the significance of the artist’s environmentalism, including his involvement with the Sierra Club.

Résumé:
Between 1919 and 1933, the Bauhaus thrived as a school of ideas that encouraged students to experiment with material, colour, and drawing techniques and learn basic skills. One hundred years later, its educational methods are still relevant. This book introduces the famous Foundation course and its major instructors: Joseph Albers, Johannes Itten, and László Moholy-Nagy. It offers for the first time a series of more than fifty exercises from the Foundation Course. The book presents a collection of exercises gathered from historical material, mainly from the Bauhaus-Archiv such as drawings, photographs, original notes, and later recollections of the tasks given by the famous Bauhaus artists. The exercises are accompanied by comments by teachers, artists, and experts with different professional backgrounds. These teachings illustrate not only the methods and philosophy of the Bauhaus school, but also provide budding artists with a foundation for developing their own practice, whether it be in drawing, architecture, design, or typography.

Résumé:
Palladio (1508-80) combined classical restraint with constant inventiveness. In this study, Professor Ackerman sets Palladio in the context of his age - the Humanist era of Michelangelo and Raphael, Titian and Veronese - and examines each of the villas, churches and palaces in turn and tries to penetrate to the heart of the Palladian miracle. Palladio's theoretical writings are important and illuminating, he suggests, yet they never do justice to the intense intuitive skills of "a magician of light and colour". Indeed, as the photographs in this book reveal, Palladio was "as sensual, as skilled in visual alchemy as any Venetian painter of his time", and his countless imitators have usually captured the details, but not the essence of his style. There are buildings all the way from Philadelphia to Leningrad which bear witness to Palladio's "permanent place in the making of architecture", yet he also deserves to be seen on his own terms.
