The first of a unique series of translations of Scamozzi's L'Idea della Architettura Universale. The northern Italian architect, Vincenzo Scamozzi, (1548-1616) designed a number of important palaces, villas and churches in and around Vicenza, Padua and Venice. In addition, he completed a comprehensive study of ancient classical architecture. including the possibilities for its application in a modern context. The first edition of the book was published in 1615. Scamozzi distinguishes himself from his predecessors Vitruvius and Palladio by the scientific approach he follows in his treatise, in which his own designs appear as examples. The clear and detailed account of the historical and geographical background to the principles of classical architecture led to the book's wide popularity in the Northern Netherlands throughout the 17th century. Scamozzi's text was regarded as the most suitable manual for mastering the rules of building, and his theories had a considerable impact upon classical architecture in the Dutch Golden Age.

En 1949, André Ravéreau étudiant en architecture se rend à Ghardaïa où il découvre l’architecture mozabite du M’Zab. Conscient de l’apport de cette architecture de tradition dans la définition de la modernité architecturale, il se décide à retourner au M’Zab avec d’autres étudiants. Les relevés des principaux monuments et édifices civils le conduisent à engager la création d’ateliers régionaux d’architecture où les étudiants conviés ont pu s’imprégner trois mois durant des lieux avant même d’engager leur travail de projetation. En 1965, André Ravéreau est nommé architecte en chef des monuments historiques en Algérie, s’efforçant alors d’obtenir le classement de la vallée du M’Zab en 1970 avant de créer à Ghardaïa le premier atelier du ministère. En quelques années, la réputation de l’atelier dépasse les frontières et des étudiants de toutes origines viennent s’affronter à la leçon du désert, comme en écho des leçons du célèbre Construire avec le peuple d’Hassan Fathy. L’expérience de l’atelier du M’Zab constitue désormais une référence incontournable pour tous ceux qui essaient de concevoir une gestion du territoire plus respectueuse tout à la fois du contexte naturel et des cultures locales. C’est dans la discussion quotidienne avec les mozabites qu’André Ravéreau forge la dynamique de son projet. Mode de vie, comme mode de construction font l’objet d’observations et de descriptions attentives que les étudiants sont invités à transcrire dans le dessin et à pratiquer sur les chantiers. C’est à la découverte de cette expérience inaugurale qu’invite ce livre en resituant l’histoire de ce lieu de rencontre entre tradition et modernité où l’architecture est vécue, non plus comme acte artistique monopole du seul créateur, mais comme fait de société. First appearing in 1471 at the palace of Albrechtsburg in Meissen, Germany, they were employed for almost a century in locations as far apart as Gdansk on the Baltic to Bechyne in southern Bohemia (today’s Czech Republic). From a historical point of view, diamond vaults show the continuing vitality of Gothic architecture in Central Europe, at a time when the rediscovery of the classical past in Renaissance Italy was changing the course of building. Architecturally, they offer some of the most impressive examples of geometrical experimentation and versatility in both secular and sacred spaces. But perhaps their greatest appeal is visual. The stark, concave–convex shapes of diamond vaults, with their lyrical play of the effects of light and shade, strike us today as incredibly modern. "Diamond vaults" explores this singular phenomenon. A text by Zoë Opacic explores the vault’s origins, topography, structure and design, as well as function and context, focusing primarily on the Czech Republic, which boasts some of the best examples, and contrasting them with those in Germany and Gdansk. One of the chief aims is to demonstrate the undoubted aesthetic appeal of this form, which has continued to inspire generations of architects.

Traveling from Italy to Spain, Turkey, England, Germany, and Russia, among other countries, and photographing churches, palaces, mosques, and synagogues from the second to the early twentieth century, Stephenson's work amounts to a veritable typology of the cupola. His images present complex geometrical structures, rich stucco decorations, and elaborate paintings as they have never been seen before. Brilliantly calibrated exposures reveal details and colors that would otherwise remain hidden in these dimly lit spaces.
