Between 1948 and 2016, David Goldblatt returned periodically to Fietas, a suburb west of Johannesburg's city centre, to photograph the impact of punitive segregation and ethnic cleansing wrought by apartheid legislation on its residents and landscape. Moved by the life force of the predominantly Indian community's families, shopkeepers, and small business owners, Goldblatt said attempted to grasp something of their life and what they had built. The resulting photographs, collected and published here for the first time, form a vivid social document of Fietas before, during, and after its destruction under the Group Areas Act. Earlier images of storefronts and domestic interiors contrast poignantly with those of their demolition from the late 1970s onwards. Dignified portraits of traders in their stores capture their determined efforts to build a life for their families. Interviews with past and present Fietas residents close the book, recalling the testimonials of Goldblatt's subjects in The Transported of Kwandebele and Ex-Offenders at the Scene of Crime.

For centuries, freshwater pearl mussels have been fished from the Elster river here; a local heritage museum earmarked for expansion documents their rich history. With its double-curved canopy, the Mother-of-Pearl Museum connects two existing structures. Clad in waterproof concrete, the building lets water run quietly down its surface – as if it were always meant to. Outside, the performative detail becomes a sensory echo of the pearl mussels inside. Solid construction is associated with weight, permanence, and immobility. This issue argues otherwise. Hand-pressed bricks, wax-treated rammed earth composed of demolition material, cyclopean concrete from limestone and rubble, hemp lime as a renewable material for the future – each detail explores what masonry can do when it is rethought. Does the heaviest building material have the lightest future?

Troubling discourses of urban liveability, revitalization and improvement, Crosby examines the deliberate destruction of home—domicide—and tenant resistance in the Heron Gate neighbourhood in Ottawa, on unceded Algonquin land. Heron Gate is a large rental neighbourhood owned by one multi-billion-dollar real estate investment firm. Central to this project was the construction of a new wider, naturalized mouth for the Don River as well as a new public park on this former brownfield site. Additionally, the photographs explore the necessary demolition of many existing industrial buildings, the involvement of First Nations, the excavation of the new river valley and the complex bio-engineering techniques involved, archeological discoveries during the excavation, the re-naturalization of the site and, most recently, the opening of a significant section of Biidaasige Park to the public in July 2025.

"How to build a river," through photographs and incisive, contextualizing essays, ventures behind the construction hoardings of the Port Lands Flood Protection project to reveal the transformation of hundreds of acres of polluted brownfields into a new public park, a new river and a site for future housing. Awarded to photographers Vid Ingelevics and Ryan Walker in 2019, the commission resulted in an illuminating series of photographs that explore key themes and historical contexts of this legacy-building endeavour. Although highly regarded during his short life--and honored by artists and architects today--the American artist Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-78) has been largely ignored within the history of art. Matta-Clark is best remembered for site-specific projects known as "building cuts." Sculptural transformations of architecture produced through direct cuts into buildings scheduled for demolition, these works now exist only as sculptural fragments, photographs, and film and video documentations. Matta-Clark is also remembered as a catalytic force in the creation of SoHo in the early 1970s. Through loft activities, site projects at the exhibition space 112 Greene Street, and his work at the restaurant Food, he participated in the production of a new social and artistic space. In this first critical account of Matta-Clark's work, Lee considers it in the context of the art of the 1970s--particularly site-specific, conceptual, and minimalist practices--and its confrontation with issues of community, property, the alienation of urban space, the "right to the city," and the ideologies of progress that have defined modern building programs.
