Résumé:
Swiss graphic design and “the Swiss Style” are crucial elements in the history of modernism. During the 1920s and ’30s, skills traditionally associated with Swiss industry, particularly pharmaceuticals and mechanical engineering, were matched by those of the country’s graphic designers, who produced their advertising and technical literature. These pioneering graphic artists saw design as part of industrial production and searched for anonymous, objective visual communication. They chose photographic images rather than illustration, and typefaces that were industrial-looking rather than those designed for books. This volume looks at graphic language developed by such Swiss designers as Theo Ballmer, Max Bill, Adrian Frutiger, Karl Gerstner, Armin Hoffman, Ernst Keller, Herbert Matter, Josef Müller-Brockmann, and Jan Tschichold. The style of these artists received worldwide admiration for its formal discipline : images and text were organized by geometrical grids. Adopted internationally, the grid and sans serif typefaces such as Helvetica became the classic emblems of Swiss graphic design. This book shows design work across a range of media, including posters, magazines, exhibition displays, brochures, advertisements, books, and film.

Résumé:
Visiting the villas of Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio (1508-80), one inevitably asks oneself how people actually occupied them. Palladio conceived his villas as ''small towns'' (piccole città) that formed a single unit with adjacent service buildings and farm fields. Within their walls lived people of all ages, social backgrounds and skills. These buildings were the venue for significant moments of public life, and the principles of hygiene, privacy and comfort, which we consider so defining and essential today, did not apply- in a sense furniture as such did not exist. ''Living with Palladio in the sixteenth century'' investigates how Palladio’s houses, their floors, rooms and measurements, were designed to structure the life of such a heterogeneous family of people. It analyses their hierarchical structure with the owner (padrone) at the top and everyone involved in the everyday running of the household (famiglia minuta) at the bottom. This book fills a decisive gap in research literature on the famous Italian architect by looking at how Palladio prioritized the domestic functions of his private buildings.

Résumé:
Like a ship cast on the shore by some Mediterranean tempest, the E 1027 house, built in 1929 by legendary Irish designer Eileen Gray with and for her architect friend Jean Badovici, was little more, seventy years later, than a desolate wreck. But since 2014 an exceptional combination of the knowledge and skills of a whole host of architects and historians, coupled with a harmonious collaboration between public authorities and private initiative, have succeeded in setting the building afloat again. E 1027 can now be seen with all the beauty of its original lines, a white vessel emerging from a lemon grove with its blue awning as a sail. Up till now only familiar through the black and white pictures of the albums of its time, its interiors bring together ingenious pieces of furniture and a collection of chairs, lamps and mirrors which have acquired iconic status, and which have been meticulously restored. The heart of this book is a guided tour through this resuscitated architectural masterpiece, with details of its remarkable furnishings and decoration, all illustrated with the photographs of Manuel Bougot.

Résumé:
Tour guides are a vital part of New York's raucous sidewalk culture, and, as "The Tour Guide" reveals, the tours they offer are as fascinatingly diverse - and eccentric - as the city itself. Visitors can take tours that cover Manhattan before the arrival of European settlers, the nineteenth-century Irish gangs of Five Points, the culinary traditions of Queens, the culture of Harlem, or even the surveillance cameras of Chelsea - in short, there are tours to satisfy anyone's curiosity about the city's past or present. And the guides are as intriguing as the subjects, we learn, as Jonathan R. Wynn explores the lives of the people behind the tours, introducing us to office workers looking for a diversion from their desk jobs, unemployed actors honing their vocal skills, and struggling retirees searching for a second calling. Matching years of research with his own experiences as a guide, Wynn also lays bare the grueling process of acquiring an official license and offers a how-to guide to designing and leading a tour.

Résumé:
From the early days of recreational camping in the late nineteenth century through the multitude of modern camping options available today, ''Making camp'' explores the history and evolution of the popular activity through the lens of its most important and familiar components: the campsite, the campfire, the picnic table, the map, the tent, the sleeping bag, as well as the oft invisible systems for delivering water and managing trash. Find out how early nineteenth century German peasants fashioned rudimentary sleeping bags by burrowing into bags full of leaves for the night. Look back over several millennia to learn about the progression of tents from animal skins, goat's hair, and heavy canvas to featherweight nylon. Learn about the ways in which the skills to build and maintain a campfire have been displaced by the portable gas stove. Pinpoint the details of the essential campground map and its unique place in the camping imagination. Each chapter includes a broad range of visuals to help illustrate the rich history of camping and our collective devotion to it, including drawings, patents, diagrams, sketches, paintings, advertisements, and historical photographs.

Résumé:
In the late nineteenth century, Chicago - the birthplace of modern architecture in the United States - was a magnet for aspiring architects. The city was forced to rebuild after the destruction wrought by the Great Fire of 1871 and also to expand to accommodate a surge in the population. The seemingly endless demand for taller and more sophisticated buildings offered young draftsmen an unprecedented opportunity to influence the design of the American skyscraper. "The Chicago Architecture Club : Prelude to the Modern" documents the history of these draughtsmen, the organization they founded, and its role in shaping architectural education and modern architectural practice. Founded in 1885, when architecture was an emerging profession and formal architectural education was in its infancy, the club provided a setting where aspiring draftsmen could develop their skills by creating a professional network and participating in a lively program of lectures, design competitions, and social events. Wilbert R. Hasbrouck documents the personalities and politics of this impressive group, offering an in-depth look at the lesser-known men often largely responsible for the designs credited to their more famous employers. This volume includes hundreds of drawings and photographs. Epilogue by Stanley Tigerman.

Résumé:
Part of a whole gang of street artists--from Barry McGee to Swoon--who have broken into the art world in the last decade or so, Phil Frost's signature style is a funky tribalism--Hawaii by way of New York City--infused with a quirky sense of art history and design. In the 1990s, Frost honed his skills by painting walls, found objects and street detritus with his intricate, compulsive and highly evolved form of tagging. Frost's gallery exhibitions are crowded affairs, filled with wildly patterned totemic objects and baseball bats while the walls are stacked with colorful mixed media paintings. He crafts his painstaking paintings by collaging layers of found imagery on grounds of symmetrical black-and-white patterning, which he paints with correction fluid, and that often morph into language-like glyphs or symbols. Frost states, "I believe [my work] is indigenous to myself. I believe that within every person there is an indigenous expression of themselves." Including an essay by New York journalist Carlo McCormick and notorious lowbrow artist Pusshead, this is Frost's first monograph, and an invaluable introduction to the evolution of his style.

Résumé:
This book deals with `the historical anthropology of the ancient world', investigating the way in which Romans represented the founding figure of Romulus and the foundation of Rome in the mid-8th century BC, rather than examining whether it really did happen that way. Augusto Fraschetti presents the history of the foundation of Rome as it existed in the writings of historians such as Tacitus and Livy, by poets such as Ovid and by Cicero. In examining events in the life of Romulus, such as his war-making skills, his troubled relationship with the senate and the dismemberment of his body, Fraschetti asks whether authors exploited these episodes to comment upon actual events such as the assassination of Casear. This book is also about how Romans during the reign of Augustus, created their own history in order to account for and justify their future imperial glory, at the cost of their republican ideals. Appendices examine the ambiguous figure of Tarpeia and the archaeological discovery of a piece of wall at the foot of the Palatine Hill which has been dated to the 8th century BC. Translated from the Italian by Marian Hill and Kevin Windle.

Résumé:
Many of the projects described in the "Handbook" have combined innovative architectural training with cross-cultural immersion, social activism, and environmental science, using design skills (and where appropriate) hands-on construction projects to confront poverty and urgent social problems. Often involving community members and students, these case studies promote maximum use of recycled or inexpensive, locally available materials, as well as lighting and energy systems that reduce utility costs and promote resource conservation. Not all the projects are specific to the City of Los Angeles, but they are examples of the types of projects CITYWORKSLA hopes to develop. Our aim is that the case studies assembled within the "Handbook" will serve as models for making architectural education relevant to urgent social problems, helping communities mobilize indigenous resources and social capital to develop long-term sustainable practices that protect, rather than erode, cultural identity, dignity, and stability. Edited by Elizabeth Martin with articles by : Peter Aesbacher, Chantal Aquin, Monique Birault, John Cary, Jeanine Centuori, Joaquin Herranz, Jr., Maria-Rosario Jackson, Florence Kabwasa-Green, Bruce Lindsey, Vic Liptak, Elizabeth Martin, Ken McCown, William McDonough, Russell Rock, Leslie Thomas, John Quale.

Résumé:
Dutch design is held in high esteem around the world. Its favourable international reputation is based on the work of many designers including Jurgen Bey, Hella Jongerius and Maarten Baas, who all have one thing in common: Design Academy Eindhoven. Design Academy Eindhoven is the Netherlands leading institution for developing design talent and it has produced a veritable who's who of the country's creative scene. The final projects of its graduates often attract international attention; their annual presentation has become a must-see for innovative companies, brands and designers from around the world. House of Concepts presents the legendary school that was founded as the Academy for Industrial Design Eindhoven sixty years ago. It contains outstanding original work created in a top-quality educational environment that emphasises practical skills rather than theory. The book not only features Design Academy Eindhoven graduates and their work, but also gives insight into the conceptual design for which the Netherlands is famous. House of Concepts also includes extensive interviews with renowned alumni such as Jurgen Bey, Richard Hutten, Joris Laarman and Judith de Grauw as well as Jeroen and Joep Verhoeven.
