Résumé:
A "new alliance" is being forged between designers and commercial property developers, who are championing progressive design, in projects as diverse as apartment blocks, houses, hotels and offices. While some architects are taking a proactive role in development, others are cutting out a new position for themselves as designer-developers. This is all happening at a time that property developers are starting to recognise the added value that an architect can bring to a scheme. By taking a truly international look at the projects architects and developers are achieving together, this publication explores the economic and demographic opportunities that are now driving architect-developer alliance in cities as diverse as Amsterdam, Hong Kong, London, Malmo, Melbourne, Montréal, New York, Phoenix and Tokyo. As architects and property developers break boundaries together, they are also beginning to transcend an established pattern of notorious and longstanding ill will. Could this herald a new age of economic saviness in architecture and an appreciation of design input in development?

Résumé:
The first Venice Biennale of Architecture in 1980 was one of those events whose later reputation far exceeds the amount of attention it attracted at the time. Although attended by a relatively modest number of people, the Biennale has come to be seen as a defining moment and a turning point in relation to the history of architectural postmodernism. Routinely referred to, often with an assumed familiarity, by people who forget that they never actually saw it themselves, the exhibition has acquired a formidable “afterlife,” as Léa-Catherine Szacka calls it. It has been in this afterlife that the exhibition came into its own.

Résumé:
The years around 1700 were marked by transformations in European and colonial capital cities. This era saw the creation not only of palatial complexes and urban spaces appropriate to autocratic power, but also of essential infrastructure such as roads, ports, and fortifications. In addition, many of the civic structures and background buildings that form the familiar urban images of the eighteenth century date from this period. In all of this activity, architects and architectural ideas, formed mostly in Italy and influenced by the baroque architecture of Rome, especially the late works of Francesco Borromini and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, played a central role. Twelve contributors provide a comprehensive look at the design, renewal, and expansion of capitals and countries including Naples, Rome, Vienna, Stockholm, Saint Petersburg, England, Amsterdam, Cádiz, Lisbon, Quebec City, and Lima. The result is a fascinating cross section that allows a comparative reading of baroque architecture: from country to country, from region to region, and from the Old World to the New.

Résumé:
Building requires power and resources – then, once created, our environment structures how we relate to each other. But what would a distinctly democratic built environment look like? Should we prioritize an inclusive process by which as many citizens as possible can decide how a building is designed? Or is it about how architecture and urban spaces can best represent democracy to citizens – and how building and city planning can concretely facilitate democratic action by citizens? In "Street, Palace, Square," political theorist Jan-Werner Müller offers an elegant new account of architecture and democracy that draws on examples from Washington DC to Dhaka, Cairo to Berlin.

Résumé:
First published in 1959, 'The Golden City' is a seminal, critical document that developed one of the earliest and most compelling arguments against the then-dominant hegemony of modernism by reawakening interest in the value of our country’s built patrimony, particularly with respect to its notable classical architecture, classical sculpture, and ornament in the built environment. The book’s argument remains valuable today. 'The Golden City' can be credited with building the constituency for the preservation movement in the United States in general, and in New York City in particular. That constituency coalesced around Reed’s powerful polemic, eventually contributing to the formulation in 1965 of New York City’s groundbreaking Landmark Law, one of the most important milestones in the preservation movement in the United States.

Résumé:
Donald Judd was one of the most important exponents of American Minimal Art. Among the lesser-known aspects of his work are the numerous built architectural projects in which he explores the relationship between architecture art, furniture, and landscape. One particular location was of great significance to Judd’s architectural work: Fort D.R. Russell, a former US military base in the Chihuahuan desert on the southern edge of the pioneer town of Marfa, Texas. Judd acquired the fort and other structures in Marfa which he systematically converted into one of the largest ensemble collections of contemporary art in the world.
