Résumé:
Covering twenty-seven examples, illustrated by newly commissioned drawings and photographs, this volume reflects on the architectural ambitions and lived realities of these quotidian buildings. Architectural and urban designer Karin Templin considers the ways in which the mansion block came to define large areas of the city from Westminster and South Kensington in the nineteenth century to Kilburn and Stratford in the twenty-first. Reflecting London’s development from its consolidation as a metropolis in the high Victorian era to its present efforts to address a longstanding housing crisis, this volume explores the mansion block’s centrality to the capital’s identity and its wider relevance to discussions of housing and urban planning. This book is first in a series on types of London housing, reflecting on the place of the home in the city in the light of its longstanding housing crisis.

Résumé:
''Painting Photography Painting'' is the essential first collection of essays by critic and theorist Carol Armstrong, bringing together writings encompassing the many inflection points of her academic work, including French painting, early photography, feminist theory, and the representation of women and gender in the visual arts. In the book’s titular essay, Armstrong asks of Ellen Gallagher’s 2008 painting ''An Experiment of Unusual Opportunity'', which depicts a barely-visible sea creature created out of ink, graphite, oil, varnish, and variously sliced paper, ‘in what sense is this a painting exactly?’ This enquiry into the very essence of the medium provides a thread that runs throughout the book’s wide-ranging essays and ties together a variety of works on paper ‘inscribed, drawn, printed, photographed, and variously pierced and punctured’.

Résumé:
Gathering contributions from artists, writers and theorists, Fieldwork for Future Ecologies addresses the role that art and art-based research plays in expanding notions of fieldwork. At once a research handbook and a philosophical speculation, it explores ways of working within diverse climates using image, sound, movement and other sensing technologies, and also offers more creative interventions into the idea of "the field" itself. Focusing on projects from various geographic locations and situations, the book highlights the crucial contribution that art can make to environmental and climate studies.

Résumé:
This book brings together eight of the most interesting and significant essays by the unequalled historian Robin Evans, author of The Projective Cast. Written over a period of 20 years from 1970, shortly after his graduation from the Architectural Association (AA), to 1990, the essays cover a wide range of architectural concerns: domestic space, society’s involvement with building types, aspects of geometry, modes of projection and drawing as a process for generating ideas. The book includes ‘Mies van der Rohe’s Paradoxical Symmetries’ and other essays first published in AA Files. Evans’s writings are supported by a new introduction and an annotated bibliography by Richard Difford. This AA Documents publication is a re-edition of the 1997 essay collection originally published by AA Publications.

This is a walk through a decade’s worth of work by Misha Kahn. Glitzy, wobbly, hairy, witty—no number of adjectives aptly describes an output so vast, one which ranges from underwater mosaic sculptures and scrap-metal chaise longues to a gem-encrusted, wrist-worn, labyrinth-style ball game. Neither strictly an artist nor a designer, Misha himself emphatically avoids categorisation for the very real fear it might box him in and close off fresh, breakable ground. It’s this boundless energy for every new material or technical challenge, combined with his singular ideas and aesthetics, that has made Misha a leading creative voice of his generation.

Résumé:
''Nicola L.: Life and art'' is the first comprehensive monograph about the pioneering artist Nicola L. (1932-2018), whose wide-ranging work—impossible to categorise—challenged ideas about identity, gender, and the body long before such questions were de rigueur. Born in Morocco to French parents, she spent her formative years in Paris attending the Beaux-Arts, only to burn most of her paintings in 1965 and move towards formats that engaged people more directly: wall-mounted canvases that could be worn as costumes, sculptures that doubled as seats, coats designed for many people to wear at once, or films about radical political figures. Far from settling in a time and place, she travelled the world, finding physical and artistic homes in the free-spirited community of Ibiza, in countercultural New York, and even, briefly, in a Lebanese jail. The art Nicola made stemmed from the life she lived—there were no boundaries between the two. This book follows the same logic, intertwining both throughout its 304 pages.

Résumé:
Considering the immense diversity of sub-Saharan Africa’s architecture and built realities, does it make sense to speak of an African architecture? How does this differ from architecture in Africa? What does the term architecture actually mean in the African context? And how could these questions be conceptualised while leaving behind pre-existing theoretical moulds and biases? Searching for new ways to theorise sub-Saharan African architecture, this collection of 49 essays broadens and develops the discourse around the architecture of a very rapidly changing continent. Its authors – practising architects and renowned scholars – put forward an array of heterogeneous perspectives, question old tropes and emerging narratives, and challenge popular concepts whilst proposing new ones. All with the aim of critically examining and advancing theoretical reflection on African architectures, both on the continent and globally.
