Résumé:
We shape ourselves, and are shaped in return, by the walls that contain us. Buildings affect how we sleep, work, socialise and even breathe. They can isolate and endanger us but they can also heal us. We project our hopes and fears onto buildings, while they absorb our histories. In Living With Buildings, Iain Sinclair embarks on a series of expeditions - through London, Marseille, Mexico and the Outer Hebrides. He explores the relationship between sickness and structure, and between art, architecture, social planning and health, taking plenty of detours along the way. Walking is Sinclair's defensive magic against illness and, as he moves, he observes his surroundings: stacked tower blocks and behemoth estates; halogen-lit glasshouse offices and humming hospitals; the blackened hull of a Spitalfields church and the floating mass of Le Corbusier's radiant city. Sinclair also peels back layers of life. A father and his daughter (who has a rare syndrome) visit the estate where they once lived. Developers clink champagne glasses as residents are 'decanted' from their homes. A box sculpted from whalebone, thought to contain healing properties, is returned to its origins with unexpected consequences. Part investigation, part travelogue, ‘Living with Buildings’ brings the spaces we inhabit to life as never before. Published in association with the Wellcome Collection exhibition Living with Buildings, 4 October 2018- 3 March 2019.

The field of architectural photography, long rooted in realistic depictions, has begun to see a dramatic shift in approach. Today, traditional styles of photographic representation are giving way to a new form of individualized reality, as advances in technology and techniques open new avenues for manipulating images. ''Fiction and Fabrication,'' which accompanies an exhibition at the Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology in Lisbon, explores this trend via a range of contemporary works by some of the world’s most celebrated artists.

Résumé:
How we deal with land has far-reaching implications for architecture and urban development. The last decade has seen a dramatic rise in the privatization of urban land and in speculation. Many European cities that today find themselves under extreme development pressure have virtually no land left to build on. In view of the acute housing shortage, the question of who owns the land is therefore more relevant than ever. To what extent are we able to treat the land as a common good and guard it from the excesses of capitalism? ''Architecture on common ground'' provides a historical overview of land property from Henry George to the present. Interviews with stakeholders in global models provide insights into the current handling of the land issue. The book presents outstanding projects based on either a legal or spatial distribution of land and thus makes a valuable contribution to the current discussion on sustainable land policy.

Résumé:
The unique convergence of architecture and landscape found on the Bernina Pass inspired Swiss photographer Guido Baselgia to create a visual epic. The result is a one-of-a-kind presentation of the new road maintenance base near Bernina Pass, designed by renowned Swiss firm Bearth & Deplazes Architekten, in a seemingly arctic winter landscape. Baselgia explored the territory along the road and railway line with his analog camera. His images also draw a connection between the existing infrastructures for traffic and energy production—built over the course of the landscape’s industrialization and continued development since the late nineteenth century—and the architecture of the new maintenance base.

This issue of a+u magazine features the work of Sancho-Madridejos Architecture Office (S-MAO). An ensemble of 20 projects, framed according to two investigative themes, are featured in this monograph, supported by axonometric diagrams and concept models. An essay by the founders’ close friends, Antón García-Abril and Débora Mesa, reveals the deeper origins to S-MAO’s approach and describes how their trials and investigations have yielded 'new processes in engineering, new construction systems, and a new language'. Based in Madrid and established in 1982, the office has developed a nuanced and committed practice, rooted in investigations in plastic arts and aesthetic theory.

Résumé:
Whether it’s horror at the plastic littering the world’s beaches or despair at the melting polar ice caps, the world is gradually waking up to the impending climate disaster. In ''The green imperative,'' Papanek argues for design that addresses these issues head-on. This means using materials that can be recycled and reused, no more pointless packaging, thinking about how products make us feel and engage all our senses, putting nature at the heart of design, working at a smaller scale, rejecting aesthetics for their own sake, and thinking before we buy. First published at the end of the twentieth century, this book offered a plethora of honest advice, clear examples, and withering critiques, laying out the flaws of and opportunities for the design world at that time. A quarter of a century on, Papanek’s lucid prose has lost none of its verve, and the problems he highlights have only become more urgent, giving today’s reader both a fascinating historical perspective on the issues at hand and a blueprint for how they might be solved.

This exploration of the history of Western civilization showcases the cathedral’s central role in the European imagination. Jenkins tells the stories behind these stone wonders: the architects that made them possible, the triumphs of engineering, the artists who enriched their décor, and the inevitable human follies of those who were involved in their building, from the artisans and workers to the wealthy donors and the faithful who worshipped beneath their soaring spires and majestic domes.
