The proposal was submitted in the context of a competition sponsored by the municipality of Odawara. The office of Shoei Yoh was a finalist in the competition. The design called for multiple athletic facilities in a 3-storey structure with a roof that adapts to different uses of the space and to different external conditions and forces. In order to achieve this adaptability, computer simulations were executed to determine the appropriate dimensions for each element in a grid of 3-dimensional trusses. The project series consists chiefly of printouts or photocopies of presentation and design development drawings. Also included are wireframe sections and perspective views from roof deformation simulations. There are also some printouts of computer renderings of the roof structure. In the early 1900s, Hofplein became problematic for its traffic gridlock. In 1942 Allied bombing demolished some of the area's surrounding buildings and paved the way for re-planning. Architect W.G. Witteveen proposed a reconstruction plan, as did J.A. Ringers, but Oud subsequently was delegated as supervisor of the Hofplein reconstruction plan with Jos Klijnen as architect. Oud's proposal was drawn up by 1943. Oud planned to divide Hofplein into three parts, including a circular traffic loop, an oval entertainment plaza, and an outdoor space with a café. He also proposed replacing an older tower building with a new town hall. Witteveen proposed an entirely different design and was unable to reconcile Oud to his plan; however, the city adopted an entirely new plan that was favoured by influential Rotterdam businessmen, one designed by Witteveen's assistant (Taverne et al. 2001, 429-432). After an initial investigation Cedric Price proposed a complex that could accommodate company activities, cultural events, and artist residencies and would provide "a menu of items for individual and group demands of space, control, containment and delight. A place to work, create, think, and stare." ('Architectural Review', Jan. 1980, 16). The design called for timber-framed structures with variable infill panels and cladding, along with screens, to be placed on a grid of concrete pads by cranes with the help of computers in response to users' needs. Conceptual, schematic and design development drawings show grid placement, site layout, landscaping, designs for cubes and components, proposed activities, axonometric views, and design notes with sketches.
