Résumé:
Hell's Kitchen is among Manhattan's most storied and studied neighborhoods. A working-class district situated next to the West Side's middle-and upper-class residential districts, it has long attracted the focus of artists and urban planners, writers and reformers. Now, Joseph Varga takes us on a tour of Hell's Kitchen with an eye toward what we usually take for granted: space, and, particularly, how urban spaces are produced, controlled, and contested by different class and political forces. Varga examines events and locations in a crucial period in the formation of the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, the Progressive Era, and describes how reformers sought to shape the behavior and experiences of its inhabitants by manipulating the built environment.

Résumé:
The 100 block of Vancouver's West Hastings Street is the gateway to one of the most contested and controversial inner-city neighborhoods in North America – Vancouver’s infamous and impoverished downtown eastside. Lining the south side of the block are Edwardian-era buildings which have born the brunt of shifting market forces over the years. Developed in the wake of Vancouver’s "emergence" as the terminus for the country’s national railroad, the buildings in the area have been in decline since the 1930s, when the locus of the city’s commerce began moving. But the "story" of the 100 block is not strictly one of global market forces, nor does it belong to those who, through whatever political stripe, lay claim to it. The book is based on a monumental-sized digital print of the 100 block of West Hastings Street by Stan Douglas who utilized current technologies to create a 16'×3' panorama of epic scope, photographing each building and compositing the individual prints to assume a fantastic, impossible perspective; which is reproduced in the book as a removable full-colour poster, 5½" tall and 30½" wide. Essays by Denise Olekszijuk, Nicholas Blomley, and Neil Smith use Douglas’s photograph as a template for assessing the state of Vancouver’s contested downtown eastside; its moral, economic and social implications. Ultimately, how can art affect society in a meaningful way? Scattered throughout the book are additional images highlighting Vancouver’s history as well as work from other artistic ventures that informed Douglas’s project. This book unravels the dynamics of history and sociology, combined with photography and art, to create a compelling and visually arresting document that informs our understanding of what makes a neighbourhood.

Résumé:
The decades after the Second World War saw ambitious building programs to ensure social welfare. The Scandinavian countries in particular underwent an intense modernisation phase with the aim to distribute welfare to all. Yet, the relationship between welfare values and design in Scandinavia is anything but stable. The spatial and political legacy of post-war construction varies amongst Denmark, Sweden, and Norway and their welfare models have been changed, contested, and copied over time. This book explores how architecture, once seen as a medium for universal welfare, inclusion, and political participation, is now often associated with the opposite, such as alienation, exclusion, and segregation. The volume offers new perspectives on the history and redesign of post-war architecture and urbanity.

Résumé:
''Curating & Repair'' is a publication exploring contemporary curatorial practices and exhibition-making as contexts for dialogue, exchange and the remaking of social and cultural relations through repair. It seeks actionable insights into how artistic work, its mediation and the institutions that support it might be mobilised toward more sustainable and interdependent worlds. Taking flight from perspectives on translation, solidarity and power, ''Curating & Repair'' approaches mediation both as contested terrain and generative possibility. It discusses the importance of challenging normative power relations in artistic collaboration, alongside the difficulties of sustaining creative work against the undertow of multiplying global crises. By aligning the curatorial with the dialogical, it calls attention to the serious, collective work that we as artists, mediators and publics have at our hands
