La circulation accrue des personnes et la communication accélérée des informations transforment les espaces urbains en lieux de transit où l'individu tend à disparaître. Reste alors un décor architectural immobile, suspendu dans le temps et dans l'espace. Les artistes proposent des visions de villes décontextualisées : cités existantes ou imaginaires, elles forment un univers urbain fantasmé. Conçu à la fois comme un complément de l'exposition et un ouvrage théorique, ce catalogue rassemble des textes qui reflètent une recherche pluridisciplinaire autour de la ville contemporaine. Valérie Mavridorakis et David Perreau introduisent la publication en résumant la problématique de Fantasmapolis. Évoquant la globalisation, Elvan Zabunyan inscrit le propos de l'exposition dans une perspective postcoloniale. The Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) began to fill in this gap in architectural scholarship in 2009, focusing on the history of the model with particular attention paid to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Drawing on the museum’s vast collection of models, comprised of more than 1,200 objects created by over four hundred architects from around the world, researchers created both this book and a corresponding exhibit set to open in May 2012.
