Résumé:
The Sydney Opera House is one of the world’s great icons and a symbol of Australia. The overall image which it has maintained does reflect the brilliant design work that Utzon invested in the project, even if it had a troubled history and it was subject to many changes. This book reveals for the first time exactly what happened. Francoise Fromonot has researched documentation relating to every single phase of project--in the process discovering a precious collection of photographic negatives depicting each stage in the construction work--and her story reveals how changes in the political situation and crude professional scheming led to the Australians ultimately abandoning the great challenge the Danish architect had offered them. The text and pictures tell a unique story, both of a building and of an architect who set us an example we still do not fully understand.

Résumé:
"Building with earth" is a comprehensive guide to describe the re-emergence of earthen architecture in North America, where adventurous builders are combining timeless forms such as arches, vaults, and domes with modern materials and techniques. Using cheap recycled or salvaged polypropylene tubing or textile grain sacks, even relatively inexperienced builders can construct an essentially tree-free building, from foundation to curved roof. With ordinary barbed wire between courses for tensile strength, and with beautifully textured earth- and lime-based finish plasters for weather protection, "earthbag" buildings are being used for retreats, studios, and full-time homes in a wide variety of climates and conditions. This book will tell and show readers how to plan and build their own earthen "Superadobe" building.

Résumé:
Providing hard data for trends that many perceive only vaguely and some deny altogether, "Designing for diversity" reveals a profession rife with gender and racial discrimination and examines the aspects of architectural practice that hinder or support the full participation of women and persons of color. Drawing on interviews and surveys of hundreds of architects, Kathryn H. Anthony outlines some of the forms of discrimination that recur in architecture, such as being confined to certain kinds of positions, typically interior design for women, government work for African Americans, and computer-aided design for Asian-American architects. Anthony discusses the profession's attitude toward flexible schedules and part-time contracts and identifies strategies that have helped underrepresented individuals advance in the profession. Given the traditional mismatch between diverse consumers and predominantly white male producers of the built environment, plus the shifting population balance toward communities of color, Anthony contends that the architectural profession staves off true diversity at its own peril. Through her book, practicing architects, managers of firms, and educators will learn how to create conditions more welcoming to a diversity of users as well as designers of the built environment.

Résumé:
Building - for all its simplicity the title of this book speaks volumes about the work of Claus and Kaan. It reduces architecture to what they see as the essence of their profession. Kees Kaan and Felix Claus once claimed that their ambition was to extinguish the schism between low practice and high theory, between architecture that serves its immediate objective and architecture that speaks over the heads of its users to colleagues and critics. Severity and repose are hallmarks of Claus and Kaan's oeuvre and these qualities are often found in it simultaneously. For even at its most Spartan, their architecture is never harsh. Although one can hardly describe Claus and Kaan's architecture as postmodern, their stance does owe something to postmodernism. This can be seen in their free handling of references, such as Marcel Breuer's Whitney Museum or Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Pavilion, and in their undogmatically broad range of interest, spanning from Heinrich Tessenow to Gordon Bunshaft and from Auguste Perret to I.M. Pei. For them there is no essential contradiction between modernity and classical values. This first comprehensive monograph on Claus and Kaan gives a complete overview of all their projects (250 or so), including those yet to be realized. Of this total, fifty are exhaustively documented and illustrated. With essays by Rafael Moneo, David Chipperfield, Andrea Deplazes, Christoph Grafe, Han Michel, and Felix Claus and Kees Kaan themselves. The book is designed by Karel Martens and Jaap van Triest.

Résumé:
This monograph is the first to document all of the built work by Morphosis, a Los Angeles-based practice headed by Thom Mayne and one of the most influential architecture firms of the past twenty years. Morphosis's unconventional geometries, sculptural models and complex, computer-generated drawings helped to usher in a new era of architectural experimentation in the early 1980's. This book is comprised of bold, documentary-style colour photographs of thirty-five completed buildings presented in an almost cinematic layout, and publishes for the first time together all of Morphosis's completed work, from the early residential and restaurant projects in Los Angeles to the most recent large-scale work beyond California and the United States in Canada, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Austria. Thom Mayne founded Morphosis in 1972 in partnership with Michael Rotondi, who now has his own firm. Over the past twenty years, Mayne's academic posts have included teaching positions at Columbia University, Harvard University, Yale University, the Berlage Institute in the Netherlands and the Bartlett School of Architecture in London.

Résumé:
The architecture of ordinary people represents more than ninety per cent of the world's buildings, including some 800 million homes. Dwellings is about the types and forms of vernacular houses around the world. It documents the form of traditional buildings that are self-built by their owner-occupiers or built by members of a community, recording the means of construction and decoration of the house in many different cultures. First published by Phaidon in 1987, "Dwellings", in its new updated, revised and expanded format, takes into account new scholarship in the field, including the author's own fieldwork, and also acknowledges theoretical developments in the areas of cultural geography, gender studies, sociology and anthropology. "Dwellings" is a reference work on domestic buildings and also a useful survey for understanding how different communities cope with issues of climate, migration, mass development, and symbolic and cultural meaning in architecture.
