Résumé:
Not only is he one of the world’s preeminent architecture photographers, Robert Polidori is also--as his popular book Havana proved--a master of urban portraiture. The Montreal-born photographer has made haunting studies of bombed-out buildings in Beirut, decaying New York tenements, Versailles rooms in dusty disarray, Brasilia's paean to spare '50s modernism, and, most recently, the abandoned, contaminated cities of Chernobyl and Pripyat. Taken together, they add to his ongoing project: the interpretation of the interrupted urban landscape. This new monograph combines the eye of a celebrated photographer with the distinctive voice of an artist and adventurer. Each breathtaking image--meticulously selected by the photographer from his own personal archive--is accompanied by a compelling first person account, based on interviews conducted by Martin C. Pedersen, executive editor of Metropolis magazine. Polidori tells behind-the-scene stories about the making of his photographs, takes us to war-torn Beirut and Brasilia and other world capitals, talks about what makes a building photogenic, how he shoots buildings he doesn’t like, his favorite architects, and his love of mosques. A look at the world’s great cities as seen through the eyes of a sharp social observer

Résumé:
Nearly 50 years after its inception, Italian photographer Fulvio Ventura’s "Sagacity" is finally seeing the light of day. Begun in 1975 and originally scheduled for publication in 1978 by Luigi Ghirri’s short-lived Punto e Virgola imprint, Ventura continued to amass his photographic archive organically for the next four decades as an open-ended project called "Sagacity, Sunstar and Salamandra" (a title copied from a portentous inscription discovered by chance on a brass plate in the window of a typesetter). This was Ventura’s living body of work, inspired by an evolving passion for esoteric philosophies, the mysteries of happenstance, the sound of jazz, and the literature of surrealism and mythology. The images in this volume, gathered over many years in various locations around Europe, are spontaneous yet full of intention, cryptic but playful, and often strikingly cinematic – an altogether cohesive and self-contained psychic world, bound by visible and invisible energies.

Résumé:
This publication showcases the acclaimed landscape designer's urban renewal effort for downtown Denver in the 1970s. Drawing on the rugged beauty of the city's natural surroundings for inspiration, Halprin created a signature landmark of sunken fountains, walls, and berms that served as an urban promenade and an oasis from the surrounding streets. This monograph honors the legacy of Halprin's original work by presenting the most complete documentation available of the park's conception, construction, and use before its total redesign in 2003. This first book on Halprin's modern landscape project features new photography, archival drawings, and original documentation.

The resettlement project was an immediate response to the need for temporary relief as a result of the massive fire that destroyed the Shek Kip Mei squatter area on Christmas Eve 1953, when over 53,000 Chinese immigrants lost their makeshift homes overnight. This carefully designed book reproduces and explains the documentation of the aerea made by Governor Sir Alexander Grantham in 1954 to the British Government on the Great Fire. Résumé:
Most modern buildings are built from diverse materials, but few confront their manifold composition as a question of both design and performance. This book takes a close look at a series of global building traditions and contemporary practices to uncover the possibilities and challenges of working with mixed materials. Visually stunning, color-coded drawings reveal the materials and construction for every project. Through case studies, design experiments and writings, the authors examine the opportunities of heterogeneous construction for contemporary, sustainable, circular, and culturally situated architecture. With contributions by Jeannette Kuo, Ajay Manthripragada, and Jesús Vassallo, and photography by Naho Kubota. Graphic design by Andrew LeClair.

Edward Burtynsky (b. 1955) is one of a generation of photographers who seek to portray the visible outcomes of a globalized economy and humankind’s impact on environments around the world. He has achieved global recognition with his large-scale photographs and project-based monographs, such as Quarries, Oil, and Water, all of which have resulted in popular touring exhibitions and, in the case of Water, a feature-length documentary film entitled Watermark. However, while Burtynsky’s global standing is without question, no comprehensive retrospective of his career to date exists.

Résumé:
Thomas Struth's most recent project, "Making Time," was exhibited at the Prado, Madrid, in the winter and spring of 2007, and is now compiled in this handsome catalogue from Turner. Making Time continues Struth's established work on the subject of public art venues, and consists of photographs depicting the Prado's famous collection and its visitors, photographs that were displayed throughout the Prado during his exhibit, as part of the museum's current ambition to open up fresh perspectives on its holdings. Over the course of two years, Struth made more than 400 images in and around the Prado, showing an "inhabited" public space, and highlighting the interactions between the exhibited paintings and their viewers. This volume also marks the first presentation of Struth's earlier work, from the spring of 2005, on Velazquez's great "Las Meninas" (1656), itself a classic study of spectatorship. The result is a multilayered dialogue between Struth, the Prado, its collection and its visitors.

Résumé:
Over the course of three years, from 2006 to 2009, James Welling (born 1951) photographed the Glass House, the architectural landmark estate that Philip Johnson built in New Canaan, Connecticut, in 1949. Welling's photos offer a decided departure from the familiar views of the house and grounds: using digital cameras set on a tripod and holding a variety of filters in front of the lens, he created tinted veils and distortions that transformed the image at the moment of exposure, endowing it with swells of glowing color. As Welling described it in an interview with Artforum, the use of filters enabled his project to become "a laboratory for ideas about transparency, reflectivity and color." The 45 images presented here, which invite the viewer to draw associations between the camera's lens and the glass surfaces of the house itself, oscillate before our very eyes between photographic abstraction - a recurrent preoccupation for Welling - and depictions of architecture. With this body of work, Welling has located a wholly new approach to, and blend of, both genres.

Bruce Davidson describes the genesis of this project thus: "Esquire's editors sent me to Los Angeles, and when I landed at LA International Airport I noticed giant palm trees growing in the parking lot. I ordered a hamburger through a microphone speaker in a drive-in called Tiny Naylor's. The freeways were blank and brilliant, chromium-plated bumpers reflected the Pacific Ocean, but the air quality was said to be bad. People looking like mannequins seemed at peace on the Sunset Strip while others were euphoric as they watered the desert. I stood there ready with my Leica, aware of my shadow on the pavement. I walked up to strangers, framed, focused and in a split second of alienations and cynicism, pressed the shutter button. Suddenly I had an awakening that led me to another level of visual understanding. But in the end, for some unknown reasons, the editors rejected the pictures, and I had to return home with a big box of prints, put them in a drawer, and forgot all about the trip."

With this third edition of the Atlas des Régions Naturelles, Eric Tabuchi and Nelly Monnier continue their long-term project launched in 2017: the comprehensive documentation of the 450 natural regions – or ‘pays’ (lands) – composing the French territory.Traversing these small geographical and cultural entities, some fallen into oblivion following the administrative division of the country, the duo collects visual elements that embody the essence of a region. They comingle man-made particularities– traditional architecture, toponyms, local tastes, historical traces– and natural features, such as relief, landscapes, colours, vegetation, etc. In a transversal manner, the authors present thematic topics as formal typologies, as in the present volume: Architectures d’entraînement, Discothèques, Géométries publiques et Infrasculptures Spanning the entire country, these categories transcend the natural regions and illustrate the complexity of France as a global entity.
