Résumé:
Frank Herfort travelled all over Russia for a photographic project that lasted several years, following the ideas of architectural photography and taking pictures of skyscrapers that had been quickly built after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The force and magnitude of these buildings appears bizarre, pompous and exotic; equally they evoke larger-than-life Soviet memorials. They express a longing for lost greatness and the ambition to go one better. Contextual contradictions however add another completely different grace note: the Russian residential buildings and faded idylls around the new constructions introduce a second level of meaning to the images, which poses questions and raises enigmas.

Résumé:
In his Habitat series, Olaf Otto Becker (born 1959) presents idyllic dreamlike places—paradisical tableaus from the jungles of Malaysia and Indonesia. Even the temperate rainforest of Redwood National Parks in California seems reassuringly intact: the mammoth trees are surviving thanks to rigorous conservation measures. By contrast, in the second half of his series Becker shows what happens across the globe when international corporations clear large tracts of land and giant areas of barren, treeless terrain result. Erosion also does its work, and no life can survive in these places. In the final section, Becker presents the artificial "forests" conceived by various international architects to insert greenery into urban space.

Assembled by Jean-Christophe Ammann of Kunsthalle Basel, this publication comprises a near-complete visual archive of the creative practice of Iain and Ingrid Baxter as the N.E. Thing Company. N.E. Thing Co. was a Vancouver-based conceptual art group run by copresidents Iain and Ingrid Baxter. The 'company' acted as a vehicle that interrogated art, domestic systems, corporate strategies and everyday life through the use of photography, information technology and installation-based works. Due to N.E. Thing Co.’s small runs, this work is particularly scarce. Originally published in an edition of 500, this facsimile second edition makes Companies Act accessible for the first time in over 40 years.

Résumé:
For this series, Nobuyoshi Araki photographed the same street corner from his second-storey window during daylight hours and through every season of the year. In so doing, he diligently transfers the slow-paced life of a quiet Japanese neighbourhood into image form. The narrative that unfolds is one of schoolchildren walking home alone or in groups, men and women with office jobs hurrying to work, utility and delivery trucks, mothers with strollers, loitering grandmothers, joggers, bicycles, dogs, umbrellas, and much more. Sometimes the sun shines, or the pavement is wet, while at other times the street is filled with snow. In short, it is a hypnotic portrait of the everyday.

Résumé:
''Constructive Clarity: Max Bill and His Time, 1940–1952'', the second installment of art historian Angela Thomas’s multivolume biography, continues her meticulous exploration of the life and work of the influential artist. Max Bill was undoubtedly one of the most versatile artists of the twentieth century––a designer, painter, sculptor, architect, graphic designer, typographer, writer, curator, teacher, and politician––who influenced generations of artists. Picking up where the first volume left off,Thomas turns her attention to Bill’s life during World War II, exploring the ground-breaking artistic and intellectual networks to which Bill belonged: from his time at the Bauhaus in Dessau to his connections with the Parisian avant-garde and his lifelong friendship with Georges Vantongerloo. His importance as a writer, publisher, and exhibition organizer comes to the fore in this volume, as does his crucial influence on the development of Concrete art in South America and his active interest in urban planning and postwar reconstruction. contexts in which he worked.

Résumé:
Devoted exclusively to the artist’s works on paper, ''Bridget Riley drawings: From the artist’s studio'' explores the importance of these works not only as a means of visual experimentation but as works of art in their own right. Throughout her working life, Riley has preserved works of particular significance, creating an archive that records her constant artistic inquiry and development. The studies presented in the book are drawn entirely from this personal collection, with Riley’s own input. They demonstrate the artist’s progression from early figurative works, through the monochrome geometry of the 1960s, to the examination of color that has characterized the second half of her long career. The choice of work explores the themes that have absorbed Riley in different periods and highlights key influences: the importance of life drawing to her and the significance of artists such as Seurat and Mondrian. The book illustrates—literally and figuratively—the story of a productive and constantly experimental career, underpinned by drawing.

Résumé:
When the public coffers are low, the burden for social policy and urban planning falls more to citizens, and community apathy or simply lack of involvement can have dire consequences. Addressing this globally crucial issue is the second volume in a series from the International Building Exhibition (IBA), an initiative helmed by the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation-housed in Walter Gropius’s former studio-and exploring urban redevelopment in a number of German cities. The aim is that these pilot programs will provide practical models for worldwide urban research and design by 2010. Here, both local administrators and planning experts examine the role of citizen commitment, whether in direct political action or in everyday urban life.

Résumé:
In the decades following the Second World War, women from all walks of life became increasingly frustrated by the world around them. Drawing on long-standing political traditions, these women bound together to revolutionize social norms and contest gender inequality. In Montreal, women activists inspired by Red Power, Black Power, and Quebec liberation, among other social movements, mounted a multifront campaign against social injustice. Bringing to light previously overlooked archival and oral sources, Amanda Ricci introduces a new cast of characters to the history of feminism in Quebec. The book presents a unique portrait of the resurgence of feminist activism, demonstrating its deep roots in Indigenous and Black communities, its transnational scope, and its wide-ranging inspirations and preoccupations.
