Résumé:
This publication includes lectures; interviews; articles published in daily newspapers and magazines, and longer essays on a variety of topics. Steiner brings to his work a keen critical acumen that draws on decades of travel, research, and contact with renowned international architects, such as Rob Krier, Hermann Czech, Herzog & de Meuron, Rem Koolhaas, Lacaton + Vassal, Jon Jerde, Rural Studio, Wang Shu, and Alexander Brodsky. At the same time, his articles and essays are often amplified by personal observations and experiences. While paying tribute to a prolific scholar and critic, Steiner’s Diary takes readers through four decades of architectural history that represent some of the discipline’s most fascinating historical developments, and it will be welcomed by architects, architectural historians, and anyone with an interest in architecture’s role in society today.

Cities structure our lives, resources, interactions, and identities. Résumé:
Cities structure our lives, resources, interactions, and identities. From Sebastiano Serlio to Rem Koolhaas, architects have used the metaphor of theater, presenting the city as stage, a comic set for comic acts, delirious city for delirious subjects, generic city for generic subjects, and so on. Today, however, we are social anywhere, actors onstage and off. So what happens when the city no longer structures us, or when basic urban elements—streets, buildings, facades, and addresses—have been augmented, superimposed, and untethered by or replaced through technology? First presented at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale, A Situation Constructed from Loose and Overlapping Social and Architectural Aggregates is a playful investigation into urban alternatives. Employing neither the holistic worldview of mapping nor the isolated islands of architectural typology, MOS imagines a proposal where the city is everywhere.…

Architect Hugh Maaskant (1907-1977) played a major role in modern Dutch architecture. He designed revolutionary, complex, large-scale buildings with metropolitan allure, like the Groothandelsgebouw and the Euromast in Rotterdam and the Scheveningen Pier. In Maaskant: Architect of Progress architecture historian and Maaskant expert Michelle Provoost places Maaskant in an international and historical perspective. Hugh Maaskant is considered the godfather and forerunner of the generation of Winy Maas (MVRDV), Adriaan Geuze (West 8), Willem Jan Neutelings and Rem Koolhaas. Yet he was underappreciated for many years. Provoost describes Maaskant’s work as part of the optimistic, stimulating aspect of post-war reconstruction and the exciting world of the 1960s. She also places him in the context of Dutch architecture, both of his time and of later generations, particularly the ‘Super Dutch’.

Résumé:
The etchings of the Italian printmaker, architect, and antiquarian Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–78) have long mesmerized viewers. But, as Victor Plahte Tschudi shows, artists and writers of the modern era found in these works—Piranesi's visions of contradictory space, endless vistas, and self-perpetuating architecture—a formulation of the modern. In this volume, Tschudi explores the complex appropriation and continual rediscoveries of Piranesi by modern literature, photography, art, film, and architecture. Tracing the ways that the modern age constructed itself and its origin through Piranesi across genres, he shows, for example, how Piranesi's work formulates the ideas of “contrast” in photography, “abstraction” in painting and “montage” in cinema. Tschudi's exploration of Piranesi's influence on modern architectural discourse includes interviews with such distinguished architects as Peter Eisenman, Bernard Tschumi, Steven Holl, and Rem Koolhaas.

Seen through the eyes of an architect and photographer, The Architecture of Natural Light considers the many effects of natural illumination in contemporary buildings. This comprehensive survey begins with exploring the advances and experimentation of architects throughout the centuries. Each of the following chapters is devoted to a specific quality of natural light, including evanescence, atomization, and luminescence, and examines the particular uses of light through many disciplines—from art history to film and literature. With more than fifty case studies of buildings from around the world, this volume considers works by some of the world’s most influential architects, including Tadao Ando, Steven Holl, Herzog & de Meuron, Peter Zumthor, Frank Gehry, Álvaro Siza, Alberto Campo Baeza, Rafael Moneo, Rem Koolhaas, Jean Nouvel, Fumihiko Maki, and Toyo Ito, among others.

What does the ideal capital look like? Photographer Nick Hannes traveled to six countries – Egypt, Korea, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and Brazil – that have recently built a new capital or are in the process of doing so. Each and every one of them is a typical example of what Rem Koolhaas calls the Generic City: a planned city without historical layers, local identity, or its own character. As a visual sociologist with a sharp eye for detail, Hannes searches for the human dimension in a setting full of spectacular architecture and pompous prestige projects. "New Capital" is a critical reflection on unbridled neoliberal urban development and its social and ecological consequences, but is also peppered with subtle humor and surprising coincidences. Meandering between pride and sadness, "New Capital" shows how utopia and dystopia are sometimes surprisingly close.

Résumé:
Envisioning Architecture, the first in a series of three titles showcasing selected works from The Museum of Modern Art's superlative architecture and design collection, features a wide variety of drawings by great architects of the modern period, from early masters such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to contemporary practitioners including Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, and others. Revealing the range of aesthetic viewpoints in architecture since the late 19th century, these drawings also cumulatively trace the development of the field, almost incidentally making the crucial point that in this increasingly technological age, the age-old discipline of drawing is as vital and inventive as ever. The book opens with an exploration of the relatively brief history of collecting architectural drawings, whose practice dates back little farther than the 16th century.

Résumé:
The model is one of the oldest means of architectural representation and comes in an extravagant variety of forms, from miniaturizations of reality mesmerizing in their exactness to wildly energetic sculptural representations. "Modeling Messages: The Architect and the Model" is a study of the contemporary model, American and international, and its myriad uses in architectural practice. Among the illustrations are inventive designs by architects Peter Eisenman, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, and Rem Koolhaas. Author Karen Moon discusses the meaning of the model for the architect, the relationship between model and building, and the impact of scale. She also explores how architects use models for presentation and the creation of a public image. In addition, she focuses on the practice of model making: the relationship between the architect and the maker; the materials and new technologies that are transforming model making.
