Résumé:
This book makes available for the first time in English an important interview on the topic of photography that Jacques Derrida granted in 1992 to the German theorist of photography Hubertus von Amelunxen and the German literary and media theorist Michael Wetzel. Their conversation addresses questions of presence and its manufacture, the technicity of presentation, the volatility of the authorial subject, and the concept of memory. Derrida offers a penetrating intervention with regard to the distinctive nature of photography vis-à-vis related technologies such as cinema, television, and video. Questioning the divides between so-called old and new media, original and reproduction, analog and digital modes of recording and presenting, he provides stimulating insights into the ways in which we think and speak about the photographic image today.

A "glitch" usually fixes itself in the amount of time it takes for it to be noticed in the first place, whether as a scrambled cable television delay, a page-loading error on an internet browser or a jumble of pixels on an ATM interface. This publication consists of over 200 glitch images grabbed, composed and provoked by artists who present these complex fragments of color and lines as thought-provoking mistakes that merit being considered in an aesthetic sense, no matter if as art or as advertising. Artists like Angela Lorenz, O.K. Parking and Karl Klomp muse about what glitches mean to them. The images and text in Glitch capture the fact that no one can deliberately make a mistake, although mistakes are often the greatest sources of inspiration.

Résumé:
''Tricks of the light'' brings together essays by critic and art historian Jonathan Crary, internationally known for his groundbreaking and widely admired studies of modern Western visual culture. This collection features a compelling selection of Crary’s responses to modern and contemporary art and to the transformations of twentieth-century media systems and urban/technological environments. The book is enhanced by several expansive essays on the unstable status of television, both amid its beginnings in the 1930s and then during its assimilation into new assemblages and networks in the 1980s and 90s. These assess its many-sided role in the reshaping of subjectivity, temporality, and the operation of power. Like all of Crary’s work, his writing here is grounded in the acuteness of his engagement with perceptual artifacts of many kinds and in his nuanced reading of historical processes and their cultural reverberations.

Résumé:
Like the flute melody from ''Hinterland Who's Who,'' the 1970s haunt Canadian cultural memory. Though the decade often feels lost to history, ''Hinterland Remixed'' focuses on boldly innovative works as well as popular film, television, and music to show that Canada never fully left the 1970s behind. Andrew Burke reveals how contemporary artists and filmmakers have revisited the era's cinematic and televisual residues to uncover what has been lost over the years. Investigating how the traces of an analogue past circulate in a digital age, Burke digs through the remnants of 1970s Canadiana and examines key audiovisual works from this overlooked decade, uncovering the period's aspirations, desires, fears, and anxieties. He then looks to contemporary projects that remix, remediate, and reanimate the period. Exploring an idiosyncratic selection of works, this book asks key questions about nation, nostalgia, media, and memory.

This first collection reveals the remarkably eloquent writings and conversations of sculptor Barbara Hepworth (1903–1975). The compilation finally makes available previously out-of-print and inaccessible writings, and includes a significant number of unpublished texts. A surprisingly large body of work, it spans almost the whole of Hepworth’s artistic life. Her gift for language and desire to communicate to a public are evident throughout. Alongside the writings are Hepworth’s lectures and speeches, a selection of interviews and conversations with writers and journalists, and radio and television broadcasts. The collection sheds new light on Hepworth’s life, her artistic practices, the sources of her inspiration, the breadth of her intellectual interests, and her deep engagement with contemporary politics and society, from the United Nations to St. Ives. Images include replications of the sculptor’s manuscripts and archive photographs from Hepworth’s own collection.

Résumé:
Described as “a continuous carnival” and “the crossroads of the world,” Times Square is a singular phenomenon: the spot where imagination and veracity intersect. To Marshall Berman, it is also the flashing, teeming, and strangely beautiful nexus of his life. In this remarkable book, Berman takes us on a thrilling illustrated tour of Times Square, revealing a landscape both mythic and real. Interleafing his own recollections with social commentary, he reveals how movies, graphic arts, literature, popular music, television, and, of course, the Broadway theater have reflected Times Square’s voluminous light to illuminate a vast spectrum of themes and vignettes. Berman shows how the square’s distinctive aura finds its source in a stunningly diverse list of performers, writers, and impresarios. He also celebrates the unsung heroes—the artists, engineers, and hucksters behind the square’s landmark signs.

Crystallography’ means the study of crystals, but also, taken literally, ‘lucid writing.’ The book exists in the intersection of poetry and science, exploring the relationship between language and crystals – looking at language as a crystal, a space in which the chaos of individual parts align to expose a perfect formation of structure. As Bök himself says, ‘a word is a bit of crystal in formation,’ suggesting there is a space in which words, like crystals, can resonate pure form. Christian Bök is the author of Eunoia, winner of the 2002 Griffin Prize for Poetic Excellence. Bök has created artiflcial languages for two television shows: Gene Roddenberry’s Earth: Final Confiict and Peter Benchley’s Amazon. His conceptual artworks (which include books built out of Rubik cubes and Lego bricks) have appeared at the Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York. He teaches Canadian Literature at York University.

Résumé:
Joan Jonas approaches video as a drawing tool, a mirror, and a framing device. Since 1968, she has used video and performance to explore ways of seeing, the rhythms of ritual, and the archetypal authority of objects and gestures. With her influential 1976 work, I Want to Live in the Country (And Other Romances) Jonas nimbly structures an elliptical narrative that unmistakably establishes her voice and visual lexicon. I Want to Live in the Country features two locations—the untamed landscape of Nova Scotia and a television studio in New York City—as it examines themes of loss, displacement, time, and memory through still life compositions and Super-8 footage. Jonas creates a meditation of frames within frames, monitors within monitors, overlaid with poetic musings—a murmured story of the unconscious. Joan Jonas, Professor of Visual Arts at MIT, is known for her pioneering video and performance art.

Résumé:
"Always and never" is a one-off title by Ari Marcopolous combining old and new photographs in a unique body of work, thought to create a larger picture of Marcopoulos' work. "For every photograph that has been presented, there are hundreds more that he has not yet found the right moment to introduce. Timing is not just in relation to taking the shot, but also to its public exposure." states curator Kate Fowle in her text for the 2006 "Flow" exhibition catalog. Marcopoulos’s work is often talked about in the context of his engagement with subcultures (skateboarding, art, music). Non-descript skies, anonymous television footage, and unpopulated landscapes counter the action of extreme sports, the stage, or the street, for which he is most known for. The book is published on occasion of the exhibition "Always and Never" at Galleria Patricia Armocida in Milan.
