Courts of law are projections of civic power into the built environment. States have traditionally expressed themselves with monumentality, with its implications of permanence, but modern government aspires to transparency, which society also expects. Five projects demonstrate how architects address these tensions, among them the Paris Courthouse by Renzo Piano Building Workshop and the Palace of Justice in Córdoba by Mecanoo + AYESA. In addition, five recently completed cultural warehouses by KOKO Architects, Franklin Azzi, and others show how various design strategies can be implemented in the conversion of industrial buildings to other functions.

Résumé:
Jahresring 65 is specific to Fogo Island, an island of approximately 2,500 inhabitants located off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. A centuries-old cod-fishing settlement, the community’s livelihood was almost devastated in the mid-twentieth century due to industrial overfishing. The island is now experiencing profound social, economic, and cultural transformation, due in part to a recent series of art, social, business, and asset-based community development initiatives. Now, Fogo Island stands as an example of the potential (but also the contradictions) of contemporary alliances between art, design, and social entrepreneurship.

Résumé:
Glamour is an alluring but elusive concept. We most readily associate it with fashion, industrial design, and Hollywood of the Golden Age, and yet it also shaped the language and interests of high modernism. In Glamour in Six Dimensions Judith Brown looks at the historical and aesthetic roots of glamour in the early decades of the twentieth century, arguing that glamour is the defining aesthetic of modernism. In the clean lines of modernism she finds the ideal conditions for glamour-blankness, polish, impenetrability, and the suspicion of emptiness behind it all.
