He called it "die Hütte" ("the hut"). Over the years, Heidegger worked on many of his most famous writings in this cabin, from his early lectures to his last enigmatic texts. He claimed an intellectual and emotional intimacy with the building and its surroundings, and even suggested that the landscape expressed itself through him, almost without agency. In Heidegger's Hut, Adam Sharr explores this intense relationship of thought, place, and person. Heidegger's mountain hut has been an object of fascination for many, including architects interested in his writings about "dwelling" and "place." Sharr's account--the first substantive investigation of the building and Heidegger's life there--reminds us that, in approaching Heidegger's writings, it is important to consider the circumstances in which the philosopher, as he himself said, felt "transported" into the work's "own rhythm." Indeed, Heidegger's apparent abdication of agency and tendency toward romanticism seem especially significant in light of his troubling involvement with the Nazi regime in the early 1930s. In "Design on the edge", David Orr writes about the planning and design of Oberlin's environmental studies building as part of a larger story about the art and science of ecological design and the ability of institutions of higher learning themselves to learn. The Lewis Center, which has attracted worldwide attention as a model of ecological design, operates according to environmental principles. It is powered entirely by solar energy, features landscaping with fruit trees and vegetable gardens, and houses a Living Machine, which processes all wastewater for reuse in the building or landscape. Orr puts the Lewis Center into historical design context and describes the obstacles and successes he encountered in obtaining funds and college approval, interweaving the particulars of the center with thoughts on the larger environmental and societal issues the building process illustrates. Equal parts analysis, personal reflection, and call to action, "Design on the edge" illustrates the process of institutional change, institutional learning, and the political economy of design. It describes how the idea of the Lewis Center originated and was translated into reality with the help of such environmental visionaries as William McDonough and John Todd, and how the building has performed since its completion.

For more than twenty years, David Piscuskas and Juergen Riehm, principals of 1100 Architect, have honed a distinctive architecture informed by proportion, materiality, light, and detail. The firm's designs do not adhere to any specific stylistic codes but do share an understated architectural signature: an elegance of proportion, an innovative yet direct use of materials, a meticulous execution. A sequel to "1100 Architect" (1997), this new monograph includes more than twenty recent buildings and projects, notably Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School and the Irish Hunger Memorial, both in New York City, and the Naha City Gallery and Apartment House, in Japan. The firm’s work encompasses cultural, institutional, residential, and commercial work. In addition to a perceptive essay by a long-time observer of the firm’s work, the partners discuss five design elements essential to their practice: detail, materiality, effortlessness, permeability, and recognition.
