Résumé:
As shopping shifts online and the economic shocks associated with the coronavirus pandemic push bankruptcies to unprecedented levels, retail is facing its own version of the end of days. The arsenal of commercial techniques that retail has developed can no longer function as usual. As a result, the entangled worlds of architecture, fashion, business, and art appear to us in a new light, testifying to a culture that is going extinct. At the same time, retail’s techniques of attraction and distraction have become visible in a new way. Stripped of their use-value, they reveal themselves as techniques of pure display. 'Retail Apocalypse' presents a compendium of case studies, interventions, and object lessons rescued from the bonfire of retail culture, ranging from Friedrich Kiesler’s display windows to Gae Aulenti’s Fiat showrooms; from J. G. Ballard’s dystopian fantasies to TELFAR’s critical utopias; and from Rem Koolhaas to Herzog & de Meuron.

Résumé:
In this publication, Victoria Newhouse addresses the aesthetics and acoustics in concert halls and opera houses of the past, present, and future. Site and Sound explores the daunting, perennial question: Does the music serve the space, or the other way around? Newhouse starts with a survey of venues from ancient Greek and Roman times and progresses to contemporary works around the world. She singles out Lincoln Center in particular for its long history and its transitions and remodelings over the years. Two major chapters cover the present: one focuses on recent work in the West, including the National Opera House of Norway in Oslo by Snohetta (2008), the Casa da Musica in Porto, Portugal, by Rem Koolhaas (2005), and many more; the second examines the boom in concert halls in China. A final chapter looks at projects that are currently planned and the future of an architecture for music.

Résumé:
Strong and ironic, material and program-based, contained and purposeful are some of the adjectives that could be used to sum up the sound and lucid oeuvre of Piet and Wim Eckert (born in 1968 and in 1969, respectively). After graduating at the ETH Zürich and a period working at the studio of Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam and living in cities like Los Angeles or Seoul, they set up their own office, E2A, in 2001. Two decades later, AV Monographs gathers a selection of twenty works that reflect the intellectual maturity and constructive precision of the Zurich-based studio. Despite the scarce geographic variety (only two of the buildings featured are outside of Switzerland), the projects published on these pages address a wide range of programs, from schools to sport centers and headquarters for newspapers, foundations or factories via single-family houses, apartment buildings, mixed-use blocks and even a police station.

Résumé:
Take Rem Koolhaas’s lauded new Seattle Public Library, and remove it from its context. Would it be as beautiful? Would it lose something of its meaning (not to mention the books off the shelves), if you picked it up and placed it elsewhere? Is it even possible for a building to have no relation whatsoever to the place where it is erected? Is it pointless to talk about architecture as a pure intellectual enterprise, without grounding it in its surroundings? These are among the important questions raised by the German architecture scholar Florentine Sack in this exploration of the philosophical, aesthetic, and subjective links between a building and its environment. Drawing upon traditions as old as that of the Japanese house through models of classical Western modernism, she brings the notion of unity to bear on contemporary architecture, referring to exemplary buildings by Koolhaas, Herzog & de Meuron, Peter Zumthor, Kazuyo Sejima, Ryue Nishizawa, and many others.

Résumé:
Explicit sexual imagery has erupted in every medium and on every surface. While some react to it by pointing and laughing, hardly anyone has stopped to seriously consider its impact. Behind this phenomenon lies the normalization of pornography, which along with the complete turnaround in social attitudes to it, has been one of the most momentous developments in contemporary life. In "Designing pornotopia", Rick Poynor explores recent advertising and design and the invasion of sexual imagery into everyday life, revealing how advertising walks the fine line between prudish and vulgar imagery. Developing the discussion of Poynor's previous anthology, "Obey the giant", "Designing pornotopia" covers a wide area of subjects, from magazines, billboard advertising, branding, illustration, photography, tattoos, and music graphics to architecture and includes interviews with architect Rem Koolhaas and maverick American graphic designer and performance artist Elliott Earls. Along the way Poynor reassesses the early work of Peter Saville and tracks the unstoppable rise of Stefan Sagmeister, among others.

Résumé:
"Dutch architects in booming China" presents more than 80 projects (also on show in the exhibition of the same name) which are lavishly illustrated and described in detail. Together, they present a fascinating and unique picture of Dutch design energy for China. Among them are: the State Television in Beijing (Rem Koolhaas, OMA), Guang Dong Museum in Guangzhou (UN Studio), Sleeping Dragon in Hong Kong (Atelier Dutch), Xintian International Kindergarten (NEXT Architects) and Guo Tai Bridge in Tianjin (Verburg Hoogendijk Architecten). The projects are accompanied by four essays, written by China experts. The regional planner Ton Kreukels describes the history of urban development in China. The Shanghai-based architect Kok-Meng Tan discusses Chinese architecture and urbanism at the present moment and takes a look behind the scenes of Chinese architectural practice. Marlies Buurman records the experiences of the more than thirty Dutch offices working in China, and Maarten Kloos gives an introduction to the projects by Dutch architects who are working worldwide.

Résumé:
Luis Barragán’s house, Louis Kahn wrote after visiting it, is a place that “could have been built a hundred years ago or a hundred years from now.” So, in more ways than one, is The Air is Blue, an exhibition orchestrated in the master's house and studio by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Pedro Reyes, over the course of three years. The ever-growing list of participants comprised at the end forty-seven artists and contributors, including Francis Alÿs, Daniel Buren, Gilbert & George, Dominique Gonzales-Foerster, Joseph Grigely, Rem Koolhaas, Lygia Pape, Anri Sala, Ettore Sottsass, Rikrit Tiravanija, and Niele Toroni. Their interventions collided visions and conversations about poetry, urbanism, music, sexuality, art, and architecture. A catalogue was published in 2006, but never circulated. After ten years, this reprint consists on an integral black-and-white scan of the original book, with a small appendix of previously unpublished images and a new afterword written by Reyes. All on blue paper.

Résumé:
An open city without borders that is capable of flowing out in all directions to allow its residents to move freely and flexibly: this fascinating utopian conception of architectural and lifeworld growth formed the starting point for Constant’s Situationist project New Babylon. Between 1956 and 1974, the Dutch painter and cofounder of the avant-garde movements Cobra and the Situationist International worked on numerous models, paintings, drawings and collages for the purpose of depicting his vision of the nomadic city of the future. This catalogue focuses not only on New Babylon’s architectural aspects but embraces them as an artist’s synthesis of the arts. Besides the models, drawings and collages, attention is also given to the designs in order to trace Constant’s artistic process. This not only provides extensive insight into utopian urban planning, but to a greater degree into a mode of thought and imagination. The book includes an interview with Rem Koolhaas on Constant’s pioneering project.
